Newsletter Issue 21 Fall/Winter 2020 STAT 2021 PREVIEW NEWSLETTER ISSUE 21 FALL/WINTER 2020 VISIT SPORTSTRAVELANDTOURS.COM OR CALL 800-662-4424 TODAY! Yes, you read that THE COOPERSTOWN SPECIAL 2020 ( correctly! ) Our Return to Baseball Began in Cooperstown. After a devastating spring, when we all started to miss baseball again, we finally heard the great news. On June 26 The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum was reopening its doors and slowly starting to welcome fans back to the game they love. The MLB season was start- ing back up and fans were ready. So when Sports Travel and Tours decided to test out a small weekend getaway - there was no better choice than to start in Cooperstown. Our recent Cooperstown Special took place October 22-25, with our guests staying at the legendary Otesaga Hotel. The resort that houses the returning Hall of Famers every summer was a wonderful experience. The breathtaking views overlooking Otsego Lake was even nicer with the late fall foliage of upper New York State as a backdrop. The weekend included a private artifact spotlight showcasing some of the greatest World Series’ artifacts in the museum. One of the highlights according to RJ Hoagland, was to actually hold a baseball once used by one of his heroes. “Since we were a small group, the Hall of Fame brought out artifacts that were special to each of us.... I am a Cardinals’ fan so there was this baseball sitting there. My favorite was being able to hold Babe [BOTTOM] Local favorite destination, Red Shed Brewery. Ruth's bat,” explained Michael. In addition to the Hall of Fame, this independent weekend also included passes to two of Cooperstown’s other popular museums - The Fenimore Art Museum and the Farmers’ Museum. “As many times as I have been to Cooperstown, this was the first time I have been to the Fenimore Art Museum. It was really interesting to see the exhibits and artifacts of the Native Americans,” explained Michael Woods. Hoagland, who in addition to several baseball road trips, has been to induction weekend with STAT several times, enjoyed spending his week- end in the town's most famous hotel. “Considering the times we are going through, the stay at the Otesaga was an unbelievable experience even with the limited amount of activities available. I consider staying there a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and yes I would consider doing it again. Cooperstown in the fall is such a quaint, scenic town. The foliage is breathtaking and the “off-season” is the best time to visit”. Hoagland adds, “If travelers don't want to contend with the crowds of people that occupy the streets, shops and restaurants of Cooperstown during the spring and summer, this weekend is ideal.” Join Us Next Time - October 21-24, 2021 Also see 2021 ALL-STAR GAME IN ATLANTA Truist Park, Atlanta, GA All-Star Plus Tour Including: Sunday, July 11 to Wednesday, July 14, 2021 Miami and The 92nd Midsummer Classic will be played at Truist Park on Tampa Tuesday, July 13. The Newsletter of the Atlanta 400 Baseball Fan Club ________________________________________________________________________________ April 2021 By Dave Badertscher After 18 long months without “live” Braves baseball in Atlanta, more than 14,000 masked, socially distanced fans turned out for Opening Night at Truist Park on Friday, April 9. When the gates opened the stadium began filling to 33% capacity, our eyes drawn to “44” etched in center field as “real” fans replaced the cardboard cutouts of 2020. We eagerly anticipated a much needed in-person baseball experience. It was high time for a rematch of the opening series in Philly, which had not gone well for our guys. Charlie Morton vs. Zack Wheeler rebooted. Braves fans were pumped! What would Opening Night at a Braves game be without evoking memories of the franchise’s 50+ years relationship with the city of Atlanta and the South? A moving pregame ceremony paid tribute to the passing of Bill Bartholomay, Phil Niekro, Don Sutton, and Hank Aaron, highlighting their legendary contributions to the team, the game of baseball, and our community. Fan Club member Wayne Coleman (pictured bottom right) played “Amazing Grace” on bagpipes. Timothy Miller sang the “National Anthem.” Jets flew over. Fans stood and cheered. Braves Country at its best. The Tomahawk Times April 2021 Page 2 The Phillies brought an impressive, early 5-1 record to town. The pitching duel between Morton and Wheeler held until Ronald Acuna launched a 456 foot, two-run blast and the Braves scored three in the bottom of the 5th. The red-hot Acuna ending up going 4 for 5 and made a sensational run-saving catch in the 6th.

In July 2019, Major League Baseball publicly announced that the 2021 All-Star Game would be played in July 2021 at SunTrust Park (now named Truist Park), the home field of the Atlanta Braves in Cobb County, Georgia. The All-Star Game is a national attraction that generates extraordinary revenue for the host city. Businesses from mom-and-pop restaurants and bars to national hotel chains prepare years and months in advance for the event. Tables are reserved, hotel rooms are booked, events are planned, people are hired. Cobb County budgeted expenses of $2 million for improvements and municipal hiring to meet the expected influx of tourists and fans for the big event. Businesses in the Atlanta metro region stood to earn $100 million. Multiple municipalities were counting on millions more in tax revenues. 2. i Stadiums of Status: Civic Development, Race, and the Business of Sports in Atlanta, Georgia, 1966-2019 By Joseph Loughran Senior Honors Thesis History University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill May 1, 2020 Approved: ___________________________________ Dr. Matthew Andrews, Thesis Advisor Dr. William Sturkey, Reader i Acknowledgements I could not have completed this thesis without the overwhelming support from my mother and father. Ever since I broached the idea of writing a thesis in spring 2019, they not only supported me, but guided me through the tough times in order to create this project. From bouncing ideas off you to using your encouragement to keep pushing forward, I cannot thank the both of you enough. I would also like to thank my advisor, Dr. Matthew Andrews, for his constant support, guidance, and advice over the last year. Rather than simply giving feedback or instructions on different parts of my thesis, our meetings would turn into conversations, feeding off a mutual love for learning about how sports impact history. While Dr. Andrews was an advisor for this past year, he will be a friend for life. Thank you to Dr. Michelle King as well, as her guidance throughout the year as the teacher for our thesis class was invaluable. Thank you for putting up with our nonsense and shepherding us throughout this process, Dr. King. This project was supported by the Tom and Elizabeth Long Excellence Fund for Honors administered by Honors Carolina, as well as The Michel L. and Matthew L.
