Paperback. Condition: New. Reprint. Language: English . Brand New Book. If an umpire could steal the show in a Major League game, Al Clark might well have been the one to do it. Tough but fair, in his thirty years as a professional umpire he took on some of baseball s great umpire baiters, such as Earl Weaver, Billy Martin, and Dick Williams, while ejecting any number of the game s elite-once tearing a hamstring in the process. He was the first Jewish umpire in American League history, and probably the first to eject his own father from the oicials dressing room. But whatever Clark was doing-oiciating at Nolan Ryan s three hundredth win, Cal Ripken s record breaker, or the earthquake World Series of 1989, or braving a labor dispute, an anti-Semitic tirade by a Cy Young Award winner, or a legal imbroglio-it makes for a good story. Called Out but Safe is Clark s outspoken and oen hilarious account of his life in baseball from umpire school through the highlights to the inglorious end of his stellar career. Not just a source of baseball history and lore, Clark s book also aords a rare look at what life is like for someone who works for the Major Leagues other team. • Umpire Stories
So, You Want to Be an Umpire? David Vincent Modern umpires like to be invisible on the field and consider it a good day when no one remembers them after a game. There have been days, though, that are memorable ones. Here are some of those days. *** In 1882, National League Umpire Dick Higham, a former player, was expelled from the game for colluding with gamblers. He had been the first umpire to wear a mask on the field. Higham umpired his last game on June 22, 1882 in Buffalo. *** On June 19, 1896, the Chicago Colts (now Cubs) were in Cleveland to play the Spiders. The latter team was well known around the league for acting in a rowdy manner. In the seventh inning, Umpire Tom Lynch fined and ejected Cleveland Captain Patsy Tebeau, who refused to leave. Tebeau instead rushed at Lynch to assault the umpire but the two were separated by other players. Lynch refused to work the rest of that game and left the field. After a long delay, the game resumed with Chicago player Con Daily calling the pitches and Cleveland player Cy Young making the calls on the bases. Tebeau remained in the game and Chicago’s Cap Anson protested the game because Tebeau remained in the contest even though he had been ejected. Chicago won the game, 8-3, so the protest was not lodged. After the game, Lynch told a reporter: “I suppose I should not have permitted my indignation to get the better of me, but after all there are things that pass human endurance, and one of them surely is to be called vile names.” Lynch refused to work in Cleveland after that and did not until 1898.

Yes, you read that THE COOPERSTOWN SPECIAL 2020 ( correctly! ) Our Return to Baseball Began in Cooperstown. After a devastating spring, when we all started to miss baseball again, we finally heard the great news. On June 26 The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum was reopening its doors and slowly starting to welcome fans back to the game they love. The MLB season was start- ing back up and fans were ready. So when Sports Travel and Tours decided to test out a small weekend getaway - there was no better choice than to start in Cooperstown. Our recent Cooperstown Special took place October 22-25, with our guests staying at the legendary Otesaga Hotel. The resort that houses the returning Hall of Famers every summer was a wonderful experience. The breathtaking views overlooking Otsego Lake was even nicer with the late fall foliage of upper New York State as a backdrop. The weekend included a private artifact spotlight showcasing some of the greatest World Series’ artifacts in the museum. One of the highlights according to RJ Hoagland, was to actually hold a baseball once used by one of his heroes. “Since we were a small group, the Hall of Fame brought out artifacts that were special to each of us.... I am a Cardinals’ fan so there was this baseball sitting there. A game-used ball from the 1968 season of Bob Gibson and a pair of spikes worn by Stan ‘the Man’ [TOP] Otesaga Hotel Resort overlooking Otsego Lake.
