We hope you enjoy the August edition of the Sportsline, the newsletter of The Norfolk Sports Club! Volume 31 #8 August, 2016 August brings Jeff Jones and Al Clark! Join us Monday, August 8th, as we welcome Jeff Jones! Jones was named the 13th head men’s basketball coach at Old Dominion University on April 4, 2013. During the 2014-15 regular sea- son, Jones’ Monarchs notched several big victories, as ODU took down nationally-ranked VCU and eventual NCAA Tournament team, Georgia State. His squad churned out 10 straight wins from Nov. 24 to Jan. 17, which included wins against C-USA foes Marshall and Charlotte as well as in-state rivals VCU, George Mason and William & Mary. Off the bas- ketball court, Jones was honored nationally as the 2015 Barefoot Coach of the Year for his work, contributions and creation of awareness for Sa- maritan’s Feet, which provides shoes to impoverished children (both do- mestically and internationally). His teams advanced to 11 post season appearances (two at ODU, six at UVA and three at AU), including a 1995 NCAA Elite 8, a 1993 NCAA Sweet 16 appearance and an NIT championship in 1992 while at UVA. Jones has a 211-183 record at American for 13 years and 146-104 as head coach at the University of Virginia. Join us on Monday, August 22nd as we welcome Al Clark! Al Clark enjoyed 30 years employed by organized base- ball. Twenty-six years were in the Major Leagues, starting in 1976 as an American League Umpire and converting to a Major League Umpire in 2000, before retiring in 2001. Mr. Clark worked 3,392 regular season games (9th most by an umpire in MLB history) along with 56 post season games including two World Series (1983 - Philadelphia vs Baltimore and 1989 - Oakland vs San Francisco), two All Star Games (1984 in San Francisco and 1995 in Texas), three American League Division Series (1981 - 1996 - 2000) and five American League Championship Series (1979 - 1982 - 1987 - 1992 - 1999). Clark was eye witness to many iconic baseball moments during his more than a quarter century in the Big Leagues, including being behind the plate in 1995 when Cal Ripken Jr. tied Lou Gehrig's consecutive games played streak and watched with admiration from third base the next night when Ripken became the all-time leader. Mr. Clark was also a member of umpire crews that were first to umpire at “The Jake” (Jacobs Field) in Cleveland, Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Balti- more, and The Ball Park in Arlington (Texas) along with closing the cavern- ous Cleveland Stadium. Mr. Clark has recently been touring the country pro- moting his new book, Called Out But Safe, A Baseball Umpire's Journey, published May 1, 2014 by The University of Nebraska Press. Letter from the President The Norfolk Sports Club held the 5th Annual Pete Decker Memorial Golf Tourna- ment on Monday, July 18th, 2016 to raise money for out Charity Foundation. It was held at Princess Anne Country Club. Thanks to NSC Past President Skip Burton, for securing our course and for getting our special guest, Frank Beamer, retired Head Football Coach of Virginia Tech. The staff at the golf course could not have been better to work with. Thanks to the Pro, Paul Michaelian, and General Manager, Bill Shonk, for their time and effort to make the tournament run smoothly. Coach Beamer welcomed the golfers and gave opening remarks. Although he could not play, he made himself available for an interview with Channel 13 sportscaster, Brian Smith. Mr. Beamer was also available for pictures and autographs. Our own Vicki Trexler, NSC President Elect, drove him out on the course to visit all of the four- somes. Afterward, at our dinner, Coach Beamer was honored with an award from our NSC Past President, and evening's emcee, Rick Kiefner. It was a hot day, but PACC graciously provided wa- ter and cool towels to our players. Lunch and dinner was wonderfully prepared and served by their staff, and all of the players had a great time.
