It is well appreciated that historical and ecological processes are important determinates of freshwater biogeographic assemblages. Phylogeography can potentially lend important insights into the relative contribution of historical processes in biogeography. How- ever, the extent that phylogeography reflects historical patterns of drainage connection may depend in large part on the dispersal capability of the species. Here, we test the hypothesis that due to their relatively greater dispersal capabilities, the neotropical cichlid species Andinoacara coeruleopunctatus will display a phylogeographic pattern that differs from previously described biogeographic assemblages in this important region. Based on an analysis of 318 individuals using mtDNA ATPase 6/8 sequence and restriction fragment length polymorphism data, we found eight distinct clades that are closely associated with biogeographic patterns. -
Genome Sequences of Tropheus Moorii and Petrochromis Trewavasae, Two Eco‑Morphologically Divergent Cichlid Fshes Endemic to Lake Tanganyika C
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Genome sequences of Tropheus moorii and Petrochromis trewavasae, two eco‑morphologically divergent cichlid fshes endemic to Lake Tanganyika C. Fischer1,2, S. Koblmüller1, C. Börger1, G. Michelitsch3, S. Trajanoski3, C. Schlötterer4, C. Guelly3, G. G. Thallinger2,5* & C. Sturmbauer1,5* With more than 1000 species, East African cichlid fshes represent the fastest and most species‑rich vertebrate radiation known, providing an ideal model to tackle molecular mechanisms underlying recurrent adaptive diversifcation. We add high‑quality genome reconstructions for two phylogenetic key species of a lineage that diverged about ~ 3–9 million years ago (mya), representing the earliest split of the so‑called modern haplochromines that seeded additional radiations such as those in Lake Malawi and Victoria. Along with the annotated genomes we analysed discriminating genomic features of the study species, each representing an extreme trophic morphology, one being an algae browser and the other an algae grazer. The genomes of Tropheus moorii (TM) and Petrochromis trewavasae (PT) comprise 911 and 918 Mbp with 40,300 and 39,600 predicted genes, respectively. Our DNA sequence data are based on 5 and 6 individuals of TM and PT, and the transcriptomic sequences of one individual per species and sex, respectively. Concerning variation, on average we observed 1 variant per 220 bp (interspecifc), and 1 variant per 2540 bp (PT vs PT)/1561 bp (TM vs TM) (intraspecifc). GO enrichment analysis of gene regions afected by variants revealed several candidates which may infuence phenotype modifcations related to facial and jaw morphology, such as genes belonging to the Hedgehog pathway (SHH, SMO, WNT9A) and the BMP and GLI families. -

375 Poster Session I, Event Center – The Snowbird Center, Friday 26 July 2019 Maria Sabando1, Yannis Papastamatiou1, Guillaume Rieucau2, Darcy Bradley3, Jennifer Caselle3 1Florida International University, Miami, FL, USA, 2Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium, Chauvin, LA, USA, 3University of California, Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, CA, USA Reef Shark Behavioral Interactions are Habitat Specific Dominance hierarchies and competitive behaviors have been studied in several species of animals that includes mammals, birds, amphibians, and fish. Competition and distribution model predictions vary based on dominance hierarchies, but most assume differences in dominance are constant across habitats. More recent evidence suggests dominance and competitive advantages may vary based on habitat. We quantified dominance interactions between two species of sharks Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos and Carcharhinus melanopterus, across two different habitats, fore reef and back reef, at a remote Pacific atoll. We used Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUV) to observe dominance behaviors and quantified the number of aggressive interactions or bites to the BRUVs from either species, both separately and in the presence of one another. Blacktip reef sharks were the most abundant species in either habitat, and there was significant negative correlation between their relative abundance, bites on BRUVs, and the number of grey reef sharks. Although this trend was found in both habitats, the decline in blacktip abundance with grey reef shark presence was far more pronounced in fore reef habitats. We show that the presence of one shark species may limit the feeding opportunities of another, but the extent of this relationship is habitat specific. Future competition models should consider habitat-specific dominance or competitive interactions. -

Jiménez-Segura1 Resumen En este artículo se revisan los ejemplares del río San Juan de Urabá depositados en museos nacionales e internacionales y, con base en esta revisión y otros estudios publicados, se documenta el primer listado de los peces del río San Juan de Urabá. Hasta la fecha, el conocimiento científico de la fauna íctica de esta región sigue siendo muy pobre. El único estudio sobre el río fue publicado en 1992 y sólo se enfocó en la zona costera donde encontraron 40 especies. Basado en nuestra revisión de especímenes de museos, se identificaron 38 especies en la cuenca, 15 de éstos fueron Perciformes y el orden más abundante. Las cuencas aisladas actúan como sistemas individuales que pueden contener biotas únicas, además son de alta importancia en un contexto biogeográfico, porque ellas actúan como sistemas particulares. Corregido 20-I-2016. Aceptado 25-II-2016. Abstract: Trophic structure of river fish from Corral de San Luis, Magdalena river basin, Colombia Caribbean. Ecological studies of species, such as the stomach content analysis, allow us to recognize different trophic groups, the importance of trophic levels and the interrelationships among species and other members of the community. In this investigation, we studied food habits, feeding variation and trophic relationships of the fishes present in streams of the Corral de San Luis drainage, Tubará, Atlántico Department, a part of the lower Magdalena River Basin in Colombian Caribbean. Fish samples of Awaous banana, Agonostomus monticola, Andinoacara latifrons, Hyphessobrycon proteus, Poecilia gillii, Gobiomorus dormitor and Synbranchus mar- moratus were obtained using a seine (2x5 m, mesh 0.5 cm), from November 2012 to October 2013. To analyze their stomach contents, we used numeric (% N), volumetric (% V) and frequency of occurrence (% FO) methods, an emptiness coefficient (C.V), index of food item importance (I.A). Besides, physical and chemical habitat parameters were recorded on site. Information obtained was processed using multivariate statistical analysis, ecological indices, and null models: canonical correspondence analysis (CCA), principal component analysis (PCA), trophic niche amplitude (Shannon-Weaver H´) and trophic overlap (Morisita-Horn). We observed sig- nificant differences on food resources consumption (K-W= 20.86; p<0.05) among the studied species. -

Krobia Xinguensis, a New Species of Cichlid Fish from the Xingu River Drainage in Brazil (Teleostei: Cichlidae)

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Krobia xinguensis is described from localities in the headwaters and in the lower part of the rio Xingu. It is distinguished from the other two species in the genus, K. guianensis and K. itanyi, primarily by deeper caudal peduncle, and details of the colour pattern, including contrasting interorbital stripes and a small dark spot anteriorly on each side of the lower jaw. Krobia xinguensis represents a considerable range extension of the genus from the Guianas and northern tributaries of the lower Amazon, into a major south bank Amazon tributary. Key words: Aequidens, Amazon basin, endemism, taxonomy, Guiana shield, Brazilian shield Introduction Krobia was erected by Kullander & Nijssen (1989) to contain two species from the Atlantic drainages of the Gui- anas, previously classified in Aequidens Eigenmann & Bray, viz. K. guianensis (Regan) from the Essequibo drain- age in Guyana, and K. itanyi (Puyo) from the Maroni drainage in Suriname and French Guiana. Kullander & Nijssen (1989) also signalled two undescribed species from French Guiana, and over time additional species have been reported also from the lower Amazon drainage. The presence of an undescribed species of Krobia in the Xingu river basin has already been published (Stawikowski & Werner, 1998).
