CHARTER INFORMATION

WORKSHOP ENDS FRIDAY

Fifty-eight students from nearly every part of the are attending the five-day Workshop on Alaska which ends Friday (August 13). The Workshop has consisted of studies of the anthro­ pology, education, history, literature, art, wildlife, geography, geology, botany, agriculture, and economics of Alaska and a one-day field trip around the Fairbanks area.

Forty high school teachers of French left for home this week after eight weeks at the University attending the NDEA French Insti- . tute. The teachers, including five from Alaska, acquired new knowledge and skills in the teaching of French. The Institute ended Wednesday (August 11).

Next Wednesday (August 18) is the last day of the summer History Institute. Forty-eight junior and senior high school history teachers, including 13 from Alaska, are enrolled in the History Institute,, ■ ■'

VISTA TRAINEES GRADUATE

Twenty-five trainees in the VISTA program (Volunteers in Service to America) graduated at the. University this week after six weeks of training preparing them for 10 months in Alaska villages. The VISTA program is the domestic counterpart of the Peace Corps. Dr. William R. Thompson, associate professor of English, directed the six-week training.. •' '

Eight Alaskans were among 21 'high ability" junior and senior ' . high school .students who studied on the University campus this sucnft under.the National Science Foundation Secondary Science Training program in.Biology The program selects students from the top ono . percent, of their clasoes. PIONEER TRUSTEE'S GRANDDAUGHTER HERE

A granddaughter of an early-day University trustee came from England to work as a graduate assistant at the University's Institute of Arctic Biology this summer. Rachel Ibbetson, 23, is working with Dr. Laurence Irving, Director of the Institute of Arctic Biology. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Ibbetson of Letchford, Hertforshire, England and the granddaughter of Robert Bloom, pioneering Fairbanksan and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Alaska Agricultural College and School of Mines from 1921 to 1925.

SCIENTISTS ARRIVE

The first group of 120 scientists who will attend the Technical Field Conference of the 7th Congress of the International Association for Quaternary Research at the University of Alaska has arrived'in Fairbanks. The Conference, composed of field work and a symposium concerning Arctic and cold climate processes, will be held August 17-29.
