It is a temple town and a major pilgrimage center in the State. The Annamalaiyar Temple is the most prominent landmark of Thiruvannamalai. Disaster Management Plan 2017 1 Disaster Management Plan 2017 CHAPTER 1 INRTODUCTION 1.1 .Introduction 1.1.1 Tiruvannamalai’s geo-climatic environments, social and economic classes, makes it highly vulnerable for certain type of specific disasters. The vulnerability varies in degrees to a large number of natural, as well as, Man-made disasters. The District’s Geology, topography, terrain, environmental degradation, Population Growth and Population Flow hastens the negative impact caused by the Hazard. The negative Impact is also accelerated by lack of well-structured mitigation plans or preventive systems and inability of the affected communities to be resilient or act immediately. The timing, frequency or magnitude of any event of disaster can never be predicted. However, its negative impact can be largely minimized, if suitable awareness and systems are developed for the communities to deal with the same. 1.2 Vision of Tiruvannamali District To plan, develop and implement an Administrative structure to aid disaster risk mitigation and re-habilitation activities and to indoctrinate prevention and preparedness perspectives at local community and administrative levels. 1.3 Objectives of Tiruvannamalai District The overall goal of this policy is to transform Government Bodies, Non-Governmental organizations and local communities into self-resilient units able to take the right course of actions in any event of disaster. THIRUVANNAMALAI DISTRICT EXECUTIVE SUMMARY DISTRICT HUMAN DEVELOPMENT REPORT THIRUVANNAMALAI DISTRICT Introduction Tiruvannamalai is one of the most venerated places in Tamil Nadu. In ancient times, the term “Annamalai” meant an inaccessible mountain. The word “Thiru” was prefixed to signify its greatness, and coupled with the two terms, it is called Tiruvannamalai. The district is one of the northern districts of Tamil Nadu with Vellore, part of Chengalpattu and South Arcot districts as northern, southern and western boundaries. The district has six taluks, eighteen blocks including tribal block of Jawadhu Hills and 1067 revenue villages. This district comprises of Tiruvannamalai, Chengam, Polur, Arani, Cheyyar and Vandavasi taluks. It came into existence on 30th September 1989 after the bifurcation of North Arcot district. One sixth area of the district is covered by reserve forest and hills which are part of Eastern Ghats. Geography The total geographical area of the district is 6191 sq. km. (ranks eleventh among the 1 districts) comprising the revenue divisions of Tiruvannamalai and Cheyyar. The Jawadis are the loftiest mountains of the region. They cover the north-western portion of Chengam taluk and the western part of Polur taluk. The general elevation of Jawadhu Hills is 2500 ft. with peaks rising up to 4200 ft. in some parts. Other important peaks of the district are Tiruvannamalai (2668 ft.) and Kalasagiri (2743 ft.). The general slope of the region is from west to east. Topography The Jawadis are the loftiest mountains of the region. They cover the north-western portion of Chengam taluk and the western part of Polur taluk. -

TOTAL AREA: The total geographical area of the district is 6188 Sq K.M comprising the Three Revenue Divisions of Thiruvannamalai, Cheyyar and Arni The district has 12 taluks viz. Thiruvannamalai, Kilpennathur, Chengam, Thandrampat, Polur, Kalasapakkam, Jawadhu Hills, Chetpet, Arni, Cheyyar, Vandavasi, and Vembakkam. There are 18 Blocks including one tribal Block Jawadhu Hills constituting the district under Rural sector and four Municipalities viz. Thiruvannamalai, Arni, Cheyyar(Thiruvathipuram) Vandavasi representing urban sectors along with 10 Town Panchayats viz. Kilpennathur, Vettavalam, Chengam, Pudupalayam, Polur, Kalambur, Chetpat, Kannamangalam, Peranamallur, and Desur. BOUNDARIES: The district is bounded on the North and West by Vellore district and on the South West by Dharmapuri district on the South Villupuram district and on the east by Kancheepuram district. FOREST AND HILLS: One sixth of the area of this district is covered by reserve forest and hills which is part and parcel of Eastern Ghats under JawadhuHills.
