Beyond the dollar line Beyond the dollar line CHAnA SHArfStein A collection of stories spanning 50 years of life experiences within the Chabad community of Crown Heights, 1954-2004 Foreword In 1954, in the early days of the leadership of the Lubavitcher Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneerson, I settled in the Crown Heights community as a newlywed. Those were exciting days for the Rebbe empowered the women to engage in outreach activities in addition to involvement in organizations and learning classes. The stories in this book encompass the fifty-year period from 1954 until 2004, a period of great changes with incredible progress. There were our annual conventions, mid-winter conventions, and the continuous activities of building our schools and developing areas of importance for Jewish women: mikvah and kashrut projects, distributing Shabbos candles, and various educational activities. Many of these stories have been previously published in Di Yiddishe Heim and N’Shei Chabad Newsletter. Several have been reprinted in other languages: Spanish, Portugese, Hebrew, to name a few. My personal letter of condolence from the Rebbe is now published for the first time. Please note that slight changes were made to update the stories and maintain consistency in Hebrew and Yiddish spellings. This volume is my response to you, dear reader. It is my fervent hope that this selection of stories will reawaken memories from a shared past and bring forth a heightened understanding and appreciation among the younger generations of the role of the Jewish woman in Chabad of today. I highly recommend the book written by Mrs. Chana Sharfstein. I have been familiar with Mrs. C. Sharfstein’s writing for many years. I have successfully integrated many of her articles into our school curriculum. The students were captivated by the stories, as well as inspired by the message. Adults as well have found her writing most enjoyable, interesting, and heartwarming. Mrs. S. בס"ד PREFACE The Rosh Chodesh Planner was designed to serve as a resource for shluchos when planning women’s programs. Many years ago, when one of the first shluchim arrived in Pittsburgh, PA, prepared to combat the assimilation of America through hafotzas hamayonos, one of the directives of the Rebbe to the shlucha was that it did not suffice for her to only become involved in her husband’s endeavors, but that she should become involved in her own areas of activities as well. Throughout the years of his nesiyus, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Nesi Dorenu, appreciated and valued the influential role the woman plays as the akeres habayis. This is evident in the many sichos which the Rebbe dedicated specifically to Jewish women and girls worldwide. Involved women are catalysts for involved families and involved communities. Shluchos, therefore, have always dedicated themselves towards reaching a broad spectrum of Jewish women from many affiliations, professions and interests. Programs become educational vehicles, provide networking and outreach opportunities for the participants, and draw them closer in their unified quest for a better and more meaningful tomorrow. Many shluchos have incorporated a schedule of gathering on a monthly basis. Brochures are mailed out at the onset of the year containing the year’s schedule at a glance. Any major event(s) are incorporated as well. This system offers the community an organized and well-planned view of the year’s events. It lets them know what to expect and gives them the ability to plan ahead. In the z’chus of all the positive accomplishments that have been and are continuously generated from women’s programs, may we be worthy of the immediate and complete Geulah.

HASSIDISM IN FRANCE TODAY: A PECULIAR CASE? Jacques Gutwirth HIs paper attempts to describe Hassidism in France today within its historical and sociological context. That country's hassidic T movement is in fact limited to only one group: the Lubavitch, who have displayed a remarkable and astonishing dynamism in the heart of a population which has not in the past been drawn to any form of Hassidism. 1 France has certainly not been a country of choice for the hassidim- neither before nor immediately after the Second World War. Surprisingly, it was only after 1960 (with the mass emigration of North Mrican Jews) that only one hassidic movement, that of the Lubavitch, took hold in France among the newcomers and soon spread throughout the country. That was a doubly peculiar development with the domina tion of only one hassidic movement among a section ofJewry which had rarely been attracted to that type ofJudaism. Nowadays in France there are believed to be some 10,ooo to 15,000 Lubavitch followers (men, women, and children). A proportion of these are loyal adherents while the rest are 'sympathisers' who attend more or less regularly the movement's synagogues or prayer houses. Although 10,ooo to 15,000 represent only two to three per cent of the half-million French Jews( we must bear in mind that before 1950 the country had barely a few dozen Hassidic families of mainly Russian or Ukrainian origin. Nowadays, however, at least three-quarters of the Lubavitch members or sympathisers are of North Mrican origin (from Tunisia, Morocco, and Algeria) and are mostly the children and grandchildren - the so-called second and third generations - of those who immigrated in the 1g6os.

Considering our grandfathers’ shared histories and friendship, it seemed appropriate to record the stories of their lives in honor of our wedding. Chaim’s grandfather, Rabbi Mordechai Meir (“Mottel”) Bryski, was generally a man of few words. When pressed to speak, he pre- ferred to do it through song. Singing played a central role in his life. Be it the songs he grew up with, Chabad nigunim or the nigunim he would sing and compose during his daily prayers. His favorite was the Shir Hageulah, the Song of Redemption (see page 34).

As our family awaited permission to immigrate, we stayed in Paris. I was a baby at the time, but I remember the story being told of the visit by the Previous Rebbe’s son-in-law — Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the future Rebbe — who came to escort his mother to America. You can imagine the excitement of the refugees at his arrival, with everyone rushing to meet him. My father told me later that Rabbi Schneerson realized the need of the chasidim to connect with the Rebbe through him, and so he took the most personal thing that each person owns — his name — and spoke about it. To my father he said, “Your name, Meir, comes from ohr meaning extension of 770, and I grew up around many legendary light. Victorian Government Inquiry into Handling of Child Abuse by Religious and Other Non- Government Organisations Submission This joint submission is made on behalf of members of the Victorian Jewish community who are victims of child sexual abuse perpetrated within the Melbourne Jewish community, including but not limited to within the ultra-Orthodox Yeshivah Centre, located in Hotham Street, East St Kilda. 1.0 Background 1.1. The majority of those making this submission are victims of child sexual abuse by various perpetrators associated with or operating within the grounds of the Yeshivah Centre between 1983-1994. Some of the incidents are currently the subject of Court proceedings. Others are victims of child sexual abuse perpetrated within other sections of the Jewish community. 1.2. We commend the Victorian Government on establishing this important Inquiry. We are of the view that this Inquiry is a step in the right direction towards addressing the issue of child sexual abuse within religious organisations of whatever denomination. 1.3. By way of background, the Yeshivah Centre is the roof body of a number of religious organisations responsible for the education and mentoring of Jewish children, including: i.
