Report of Activities of ISSE for the period from st th 1 November 2016 till 30 September, 2017 Dear Members, The Executive committee takes pleasure in presenting the annual report of the functioning of the society from 1st November 2016 till 30th September, 2017. The working of our society is guided by our objectives of promoting systems science and engineering, disseminating knowledge pertaining to systems theory and applications, encouraging meritorious work in systems domain, reporting results of original research and providing a platform for scholars and practitioners to come together to share ideas and experiences. The major activities conducted and important achievements of ISSE during the period are presented in the Annual Report 2016-17. The society had yet another eventful year during this period. ISSE has 10 chapters across the country which are located at Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Bangalore, Manipal, Hyderabad, Amaravati, Sriharikota-Chennai, Trichy, Coimbatore and Chandigarh. Trichy, Coimbatore and Chandigarh chapters were inaugurated during the reporting period. The society is strengthening its activities through its chapters by organising a variety of events in system engineering domain towards the society objective of promoting the systems concept. The National Conference of ISSE, iNaC-03 with the theme ‘Complex Engineering Systems of National Importance’, is being orgnaised during October 12-13, 2017 at Indian School of Business, Chandigarh under the auspices of SCL, Chandigarh. Annual General Body Meeting 2016 The Annual General Body Meeting 2016 was held on December 16, 2016, 5.00 pm at National Remote Sensing Centre, Hyderabad along with a Half day Technical Session organized by ISSE Hyderabad Chapter. Dr S Muralikrishnan, President, ISSE Hyderabad Chapter welcomed the gathering. Shri P Kunhikrishnan, President, ISSE and Director, Satish Dhawan Space Centre, ISRO, Sriharikota addressed the members. Dr B N Suresh, ISRO Distinguished Professor and Former Director, VSSC & IIST and Dr K Sivan, Director, VSSC graced the occasion with their presence and gave special address. Smt U Sreerekha, Secretary, ISSE presented the Annual Report for 2015-16. Dr M Jayakumar, Treasurer, ISSE presented the audited statement of Accounts for the financial year 2015-16. AGBM passed unanimously the annual report and audited accounts. 2 3 Participants of cultural programme from NRSC with dignitaries The Highlights of activities of current year and Plan of action for next year was presented by Chapter Secretaries of ISSE Bangalore, Chennai-Sriharikota, Hyderabad & Amaravati chapters. Dr VI George presented the plan of activities on behalf of ISSE Manipal chapter and Dr M Jayakumar presented the plan of activities on behalf of Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi chapters. This was followed by cultural program of members and their wards of NRSC. Dignitaries of AGBM 2017 at NRSC, Hyderabad Report of Activities by ISSE chapters Several programmes were organized under the aegis of local chapters of ISSE in the system engineering domain towards the society objective of promoting the systems concept. The major activities conducted and important achievements of ISSE chapters during the period are briefed below: Thiruvananthapuram Chapter The chapter organized a two day national workshop on ‘Space Applications for Sustainable Growth and Advancement - SAGA 2017’ during May 19-20, 2017 at Hotel Mascot, Thiruvananthapuram. The workshop was organized in association with VSSC, Kerala State Remote Sensing and Environment Centre (KSREC) and National Institute of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj (NIRDPR). The workshop was inaugurated by Shri Kadakampally Surendran, Honarable Minister for Co- operation, Tourism and Devaswoms, Government of Kerala. The Minister highlighted the various areas in which Space technology and its applications had touched the lives of the common man 2 3 Inaugural function of SAGA 2017 Natioal Workshop at Thiruvananthapuram Glimpses of SAGA 2017 National Workshop at Thiruvananthapuram and urged the scientific community to put in relentless thoughts and efforts to find new and better applications contributing to the sustainable growth and advancement of our country. Dr K Sivan Director, VSSC presided over the inaugural function. He opined that creating awareness of usage of Space system data plays a vital role in achieving sustainable growth and development. Sustainable growth can be further enhanced by facilitating child centered education, human centered development, knowledge centered society and innovation centered India. Shri R Umamaheswaran, Chairman Organising Committee/ Project Director, GSLV and Vice President, ISSE welcomed the gathering. Dr KP Reghunatha Menon, Alternative Chairman, Organising Committee and Director, KSREC introduced the theme of the workshop. Shri P Kunhikrishnan, National President, ISSE and Director, SDSC SHAR deliverd the special address. Dr BN Suresh, Prof Vikram Sarabhai Distinguished Professor released the souvenir and addressed the gathering. Shri SM Vijayanand, former Chef Secretary, Govt of Kerala and Shri VS Senthil IAS, Additional Chief Secretary, Govt of Kerala offered felicitations. The exhibition organised as part of SAGA 2017 was inaugurated by Shri S Somanath, Director LPSC. Dr UP Rajeev, Organising Secretary, SAGA 2017 proposed the vote of thanks. Dr Anisa Basheer Khan, Vice Chancellor, Pondicherry University delivered the keynote address. The workshop had 12 invited talks and end user talk and two business presentations. The lectures deal with the varied applications of Space science and technology in oceanography, education, developmental planning, meteorology, remote sensing, disaster management, health, forestry and navigation. The 4 5 end user talk gave in depth information about telemedicine from a user’s perspective. The AGBM of the chapter for the year 2017 was also conducted on 19th May 2017 at 6pm at the Workshop premises. The Annual Report and the budget was presented in the AGBM. The AGBM was attended by 150 members. The chapter aslo conducted a talk by Shri B Jayakumar, Project Director, GSLV MkIII, VSSC on ‘Indian Space Transportation Systems’ on 14th March 2017 at UST Global Techno Park, Thiruvananthapuram. This was also well attended by the IT team with a good interactive session. Another talk on ‘New trends in Control Systems’ was held on 21st September at VSSC by Prof. Radhakanth Pathi from IISC, Bangalore. Bangalore Chapter ISSE Bangalore chapter and International Council On Systems Engineering (INCOSE) India Chapter jointly organized APCOSEC 2016, the 10th Asia-Pacific Council on Systems Engineering Conference (APCOSEC), in Bangalore, India from 9th to 11th November 2016. The theme for this conference was ‘Systems Engineering in Asia Oceania – Success Stories and Challenges. This was the first and largest international systems engineering conference in India and it received a phenomenal response – attended by over 400 delegates from India, Australia, France, Germany, Japan, South Africa, South Korea, the UK and the US across various sectors including space, aerospace, defence, nuclear, automotive and healthcare and more. The conference was inaugurated by Shri AS Kiran Kumar, Chairman, ISRO. He addressed the audience emphasizing the significance of systems engineering. INCOSE President, Alan Harding, in his address, Glimpses of APCOSEC 2016 at Banagalore 4 5 Empowering Women Leaders in Systems Engineering -Panel discussion & Participants highlighted the growing levels of systems complexity and the INCOSE Vision 2025. In the keynote address, Dr Tomohiko Taniguchi, Special Advisor to Prime Minister of Japan, talked about the systems engineering challenges in the Japanese Bullet Train program. The conference program included plenary sessions on Space Launch Vehicles by Dr B N Suresh (ISRO); Applications of Systems Engineering to Healthcare by Dr Chris Unger (General Electric USA); Simulation-based Conceptual Design by Mr Kent Harmon (Vice President, Targeted Convergence Corporation USA); Mars ‘Mangalyaan’ Mission by Dr K Radhakrishnan (Former Chairman, ISRO); System-of-Systems by Dr Prahlada Ramarao (Former CC R&D, DRDO); Systems Approach to Optimization by Aditya K (Team-Indus) and Smart Connected World by Karmijit Singh Sidhu (TE Connectivity, USA). There were 32 referred and 14 non-referred technical papers presented in parallel tracks at the conference covering various topics, including model-based systems engineering, systems engineering processes/lifecycle practices, aerospace systems engineering, systems engineering knowledge and competency development, systems-of-systems and complex systems design, modelling and simulation and non-traditional applications of systems engineering. The conference also hosted a panel discussion, led by the Empowering Women Leaders in Systems Engineering (EWLSE) team, on the topic of “21st Century Leaders, Tackling Unconscious Bias,” and a poster session featuring innovative projects from students and industry. Various industries ranging from aerospace suppliers to agriculture and healthcare and systems engineering tool vendors sponsored the event. They exhibited their expertise and also held demonstrations at the sponsor booths. The conference banquet dinner featured a ‘Rhythms of India’ musical program. Sriharikota- Chennai chapter ISSE Sriharikota – Chennai chapter arranged a one day seminar on 17th September 2016 on ‘Systems Engineering Introduction and Application’ at Anna university at Chennai along with AU FRG Institute
