Report of Activities of ISSE for the period from 1st November 2016 till 30th September, 2017

Dear Members, The Executive committee takes pleasure in presenting the annual report of the functioning of the society from 1st November 2016 till 30th September, 2017. The working of our society is guided by our objectives of promoting systems science and engineering, disseminating knowledge pertaining to systems theory and applications, encouraging meritorious work in systems domain, reporting results of original research and providing a platform for scholars and practitioners to come together to share ideas and experiences. The major activities conducted and important achievements of ISSE during the period are presented in the Annual Report 2016-17. The society had yet another eventful year during this period. ISSE has 10 chapters across the country which are located at , Kochi, Bangalore, Manipal, Hyderabad, Amaravati, Sriharikota-, Trichy, Coimbatore and Chandigarh. Trichy, Coimbatore and Chandigarh chapters were inaugurated during the reporting period. The society is strengthening its activities through its chapters by organising a variety of events in system engineering domain towards the society objective of promoting the systems concept. The National Conference of ISSE, iNaC-03 with the theme ‘Complex Engineering Systems of National Importance’, is being orgnaised during October 12-13, 2017 at Indian School of Business, Chandigarh under the auspices of SCL, Chandigarh. Annual General Body Meeting 2016 The Annual General Body Meeting 2016 was held on December 16, 2016, 5.00 pm at National Remote Sensing Centre, Hyderabad along with a Half day Technical Session organized by ISSE Hyderabad Chapter. Dr S Muralikrishnan, President, ISSE Hyderabad Chapter welcomed the gathering. Shri P Kunhikrishnan, President, ISSE and Director, Space Centre, ISRO, Sriharikota addressed the members. Dr B N Suresh, ISRO Distinguished Professor and Former Director, VSSC & IIST and Dr K Sivan, Director, VSSC graced the occasion with their presence and gave special address. Smt U Sreerekha, Secretary, ISSE presented the Annual Report for 2015-16. Dr M Jayakumar, Treasurer, ISSE presented the audited statement of Accounts for the financial year 2015-16. AGBM passed unanimously the annual report and audited accounts. 2 3

Dr VI George presented the plan of activities on behalf of ISSE Manipal chapter and Dr M Jayakumar presented the plan of activities on behalf of Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi chapters. This was followed by cultural program of members and their wards of NRSC.

Dignitaries of AGBM 2017 at NRSC, Hyderabad Report of Activities by ISSE chapters

Several programmes were organized under the aegis of local chapters of ISSE in the system engineering domain towards the society objective of promoting the systems concept. The major activities conducted and important achievements of ISSE chapters during the period are briefed below: Thiruvananthapuram Chapter The chapter organized a two day national workshop on ‘Space Applications for Sustainable Growth and Advancement - SAGA 2017’ during May 19-20, 2017 at Hotel Mascot, Thiruvananthapuram. The workshop was organized in association with VSSC, Kerala State Remote Sensing and Environment Centre (KSREC) and National Institute of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj (NIRDPR). The workshop was inaugurated by Shri Kadakampally Surendran, Honarable Minister for Co- operation, Tourism and Devaswoms, Government of Kerala. The Minister highlighted the various areas in which Space technology and its applications had touched the lives of the common man

Glimpses of SAGA 2017 National Workshop at Thiruvananthapuram and urged the scientific community to put in relentless thoughts and efforts to find new and better applications contributing to the sustainable growth and advancement of our country. Dr K Sivan Director, VSSC presided over the inaugural function. He opined that creating awareness of usage of Space system data plays a vital role in achieving sustainable growth and development. Sustainable growth can be further enhanced by facilitating child centered education, human centered development, knowledge centered society and innovation centered India. Shri R Umamaheswaran, Chairman Organising Committee/ Project Director, GSLV and Vice President, ISSE welcomed the gathering. Dr KP Reghunatha Menon, Alternative Chairman, Organising Committee and Director, KSREC introduced the theme of the workshop. Shri P Kunhikrishnan, National President, ISSE and Director, SDSC SHAR deliverd the special address. Dr BN Suresh, Prof Vikram Sarabhai Distinguished Professor released the souvenir and addressed the gathering. Shri SM Vijayanand, former Chef Secretary, Govt of Kerala and Shri VS Senthil IAS, Additional Chief Secretary, Govt of Kerala offered felicitations. The exhibition organised as part of SAGA 2017 was inaugurated by Shri S Somanath, Director LPSC. Dr UP Rajeev, Organising Secretary, SAGA 2017 proposed the vote of thanks. Dr Anisa Basheer Khan, Vice Chancellor, Pondicherry University delivered the keynote address. The workshop had 12 invited talks and end user talk and two business presentations. The lectures deal with the varied applications of Space science and technology in oceanography, education, developmental planning, meteorology, remote sensing, disaster management, health, forestry and navigation. The

end user talk gave in depth information about telemedicine from a user’s perspective. The AGBM of the chapter for the year 2017 was also conducted on 19th May 2017 at 6pm at the Workshop premises. The Annual Report and the budget was presented in the AGBM. The AGBM was attended by 150 members. The chapter aslo conducted a talk by Shri B Jayakumar, Project Director, GSLV MkIII, VSSC on ‘Indian Space Transportation Systems’ on 14th March 2017 at UST Global Techno Park, Thiruvananthapuram. This was also well attended by the IT team with a good interactive session. Another talk on ‘New trends in Control Systems’ was held on 21st September at VSSC by Prof. Radhakanth Pathi from IISC, Bangalore. Bangalore Chapter ISSE Bangalore chapter and International Council On Systems Engineering (INCOSE) India Chapter jointly organized APCOSEC 2016, the 10th Asia-Pacific Council on Systems Engineering Conference (APCOSEC), in Bangalore, India from 9th to 11th November 2016. The theme for this conference was ‘Systems Engineering in Asia Oceania – Success Stories and Challenges. This was the first and largest international systems engineering conference in India and it received a phenomenal response – attended by over 400 delegates from India, Australia, France, Germany, Japan, South Africa, South Korea, the UK and the US across various sectors including space, aerospace, defence, nuclear, automotive and healthcare and more. The conference was inaugurated by Shri AS Kiran Kumar, Chairman, ISRO. He addressed the audience emphasizing the significance of systems engineering. Empowering Women Leaders in Systems Engineering -Panel discussion & Participants highlighted the growing levels of systems complexity and the INCOSE Vision 2025. In the keynote address, Dr Tomohiko Taniguchi, Special Advisor to Prime Minister of Japan, talked about the systems engineering challenges in the Japanese Bullet Train program. The conference program included plenary sessions on Space Launch Vehicles by Dr B N Suresh (ISRO); Applications of Systems Engineering to Healthcare by Dr Chris Unger (General Electric USA); Simulation-based Conceptual Design by Mr Kent Harmon (Vice President, Targeted Convergence Corporation USA); Mars ‘Mangalyaan’ Mission by Dr K Radhakrishnan (Former Chairman, ISRO); System-of-Systems by Dr Prahlada Ramarao (Former CC R&D, DRDO); Systems Approach to Optimization by AdityaK (Team-Indus) and Smart Connected World by Karmijit Singh Sidhu (TE Connectivity, USA). There were 32 referred and 14 non-referred technical papers presented in parallel tracks at the conference covering various topics, including model-based systems engineering, systems engineering processes/lifecycle practices, aerospace systems engineering, systems engineering knowledge and competency development, systems-of-systems and complex systems design, modelling and simulation and non-traditional applications of systems engineering. The conference also hosted a panel discussion, led by the Empowering Women Leaders in Systems Engineering (EWLSE) team, on the topic of “21st Century Leaders, Tackling Unconscious Bias,” and a poster session featuring innovative projects from students and industry. Various industries ranging from aerospace suppliers to agriculture and healthcare and systems engineering tool vendors sponsored the event. They exhibited their expertise and also held demonstrations at the sponsor booths. The conference banquet dinner featured a ‘Rhythms of India’ musical program. Sriharikota- Chennai chapter ISSE Sriharikota – Chennai chapter arranged a one day seminar on 17th September 2016 on ‘Systems Engineering Introduction and Application’ at Anna university at Chennai along with AU FRG Institute for CAD/CAM, Department of Mechanical Engineering and Loyola Institute of Technology, Chennai. About 250 delegates of Anna university and Loyola Institute of technology attended the seminar. Dr Latha Nagendran, Director, AU FRG ICC welcomed the eminent speakers, Anna university professors, teaching faculties and student delegates. Dr L Karunamoorthy, Chairman, Faculty of

Mechanical Engineering delivered the presidential address. Shri V Ranganathan, President, ISSE, Sriharikota – Chennai chapter inaugurated the seminar and delivered the key note address on Systems Engineering: Introduction and Application. Dr Kari Thangaratnam, Professor, DMI briefed about the seminar, its importance and benefits in modern times. Smt N Valarmathi, Project Director, RISAT, ISAC,ISRO delivered on the Systems Engineering practices followed by ISRO in building India’s satellites. Dr P Chellapandi, Professor VIT, Retired Scientist IGCAR, delivered on application of Systems Engineering in vital and critical areas on building nuclear power plants in India. Dr C Jaberaj, Professor, VIT, Former Director, AU FRG, Retd. Professor CEG has mentioned that Systems Engineering had been introduced in the universities as a subject/syllabus and has a potential to grow as a discipline of engineering in future. Dr K Jayaraman gave an overview of the application of Systems Engineering in the Anusat and Aircraft Design. Shri V Eswaran, Group Director, SMPG/Project Director, S200 project, VSSC presented the systems engineering concepts involved in the production of Solid propellant rocket motors. Shri P Selvaraj, Group Director, SCEND & ASG,SDSC SHAR, Sriharikota delivered a talk on Configuration, Design, Analysis, Realisation, Testing and Commissioning of MOTR Radome. Dr Santhoji Katare Global Engineering Services, Ford Motor Private Limited presented the topic on Virtual Verification in Product Development: A Global Engineering Services Success Story. Sessions were chaired by Dr A Rajadurai, Dr B Mohan, Dr L Karunamoorthy and Dr R Saravanan of Anna University. ISSE Sriharikota - Chennai chapter is planning to arrange a two-day seminar during December 2017 and conference during first half of 2018 at Chennai with a participation of universities to disseminate the Systems Engineering concepts, application and benefits among the students. Chapter is also pursuing to host/co-host, conduct many one-day workshops both at Sriharikota and at Chennai on various themes related to Systems Engineering

Hyderabad Chapter

The chapter has conducted a Half day Technical Workshop on ‘System Approaches in Strategic Applications and Sensors for Smart Cities’ at NRSC, Balanagar, Hyderabad on December 16,2016 followed by Annual General body Meeting(AGBM) , recreation and Dinner. Dr YVN Krishna Murthy, Director, NRSC welcomed the gathering and Shri P Kunhikrishnan, National President, ISSE, Director, SDSC-SHAR gave opening remarks. Dr B N Suresh, Honorary Fellow, ISSE, Honorary Distinguished Professor, ISRO, Former Director VSSC and IIST and Dr K Sivan, Director, VSSC and Fellow, ISSE addressed the gathering Prof. Uday B Desai, Director, IITH and Dr G Satheesh Reddy, Scientific Adviser to Raksha Mantri and Director General, Missiles and Strategic Systems delivered talks on ‘Sensors for Smart cities’and on ‘System approaches in Strategic Applications’ respectively. It was well attended by staff of NRSC, Director SCL, Members of ISSE, Hyderabad, (Academia, DRDO, Industry) ISSE, Bengaluru and members from ISSE HQ. ISSE Hyderabad chapter in collaboration with other societies conducted a technical talk on ‘Breakthroughs and new concepts in SAR and Radar’ by Prof. Marc Lesturgie, Director, SONDRA Lab, CentraleSupelec University, France at NRSC on 9th Feb 2017. ISSE-Hyderabad chapter Interacted with approximately 1500 school students in February 2017 in connection with National Science Day celebrations. Team of Scientists (Members of ISSE, Hyderabad) visited around 12 schools and gave awareness lectures on remote sensing applications, space technology etc.

Chandigarh Chapter The chapter was inaugurated on 23rd of December 2016 at Semi-Conductor Laboratory, Chandigarh. Dr K Sivan, Director, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), has inaugurated the chapter. A special talk on systems engineering by Dr R K Sinha, Director, CSIO was also conducted along with the inaugural function. A two day workshop was conducted on system design titled ‘Spec to Architecture to Systems’ at IIT Roorkee from 14thto 15thJanuary 2017 by Shri H S Jatana, Group Head, SCL and President, ISSE, Chandigarh chapter. The workshop was attended by faculty and PG students from NIT Jalandhar, NIT Utrakhand besides IIT Rorkee. A talk on On-chip spiking neural networks for classification and pattern recognition by Dr Udayan Ganguly, IIT Bombay was conducted on 14th June at SCL, Chandigarh. ISSE National workshop, iNaC-03 is being jointly organised by the chapter and SCL, Chandigarh. The two day National Workshop will be held at Indian School of Business, Mohali. The theme of the Conference is ‘Complex Engineering Systems of National Importance’. There are nine plenary talks by eminent personalities and about 200 contributed papers for the Conference.

Inauguration of ISSE Chandigarh chapter Manipal chapter

ISSE, Manipal Chapter organized a guest lecture by distinguished professor Prof Dr S Narayana Iyer, Rtd. Professor of NIT-Durgapur on 25th September, 2017 at MIT, Manipal on Control Systems – Transfer function and State variable approach. ISSE Manipal Chapter organized a Faculty Developed Program titled “PLC, SCADA , HMI and Analog Devices”, 12th-16th Dec. 2016. About 25 Faculty members from various Engineering colleges in South India has participated. The FDP has the hands on practice on PLC programing and implementation. ISSE Manipal Chapter in association with the part of Diamond Jubilee celebrations of MIT, Manipal organized a Guest Lecture on “Control Systems – Transfer Function and State Variable Approach” on 25th Sept. 2017 afternoon. Presently the ISSE Manipal chapter membership has crossed 115. Amaravati Chapter The chapter organized a Two Day workshop on ‘Finite Element Analysis of Structures (FEAST) Software’ on 3rdand 4th August 2017 in association with PVP Siddhartha Institute of Technology, Vijayawada. This program was technically supported by Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). More than 130 members participated in this workshop. Participants are faculty from various engineering colleges, industry representatives, SHAR employees and students. This workshop has created awareness about FEAST software among faculty and students. Dr K Sivan, Director, VSSC, Thiruvananthapuram delivered keynote address in the inaugural session of this workshop. Shri P Kunhikrishnan, Director, SDSC SHAR was the guest of honour for this workshop and he interacted with faculty, students and CII representatives. of Launch Complex-Application of System Engineering’ on th9 of September, 2017 at PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore. The special lecture titled “Engineering Management of Launch Complex-Application of System Engineering” is conducted on 09-09-2017 by ISSE Coimbatore Chapter. The expert from Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SHAR) Sriharikota, Mr R Senthil Kumar, CGM, SMP & ETF, handled the sessions. The Special lecture started with welcome address by Dr T Prabu, Secretary, ISSE-Coimbatore Chapter. The seminar was focused on the design safety aspects, safety practices and Emergency preparedness of launch vehicle. The expert discussed the various Safety critical systems in Launch Activities that is practiced in thelaunch pad. In his talk he explained the effects of hazards, importance of ground safety and its functions for the launch pad applications with specific examples. He discussed about the launch vehicle integration activities and flammable properties of some chemicals like Acetone, Benzene, Hydrazine etc., He concluded the session by presenting few videos showing the safety precautions and high pressure system. At the end of the guest lecture Dr P Viswanathan, Executive Council Member, proposed the vote of thanks.

ISSE Awards 2017 ISSE has institutionalised Life time Achievement award and Young scientist awards for its members, recognising and encouraging outstanding and meritorious contributions in systems domain from 2016 onwards. Shri Cizil C, Scientist/Engineer SE, Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre, Valiamala, Thiruvananthapuram has been selected for ISSE Young Scientist Award for his exceptional contribution in the design, qualification and realisation of fluid systems of cryogenic stages of launch vehicles. Ms A Kalaivani, Scientist/Engineer SE, Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota is also selected as ISSE Young Scientist for her remarkable contribution in conceiving a novel TDI ventilation system, automatic AP delumping system and automated AP feeding mechanism for Propellant mixing facility. The award carries a gold medal, memento and a certificate. The awards will be presented to the Young Scientists during the inaugural function of ISSE National Conference, iNaC-03 on 12th October, 2017 by Shri P Kunhikrishnan, President, ISSE. The society is conferring ISSE honorary fellowship to persons of eminence considering the outstanding contribution in the field of System Engineering. Members

The total membership strength of ISSE is 4700. The membership application has been revised. The procedural formalities for membership was modified and the local chapter Executive Committee is screening the application form, verifying the authenticity and endorsing the forms before sending it to Governing body. Efforts were done for getting income tax exemption from IT office. Website

ISSE website www.isseindia.co.in has crossed 10,000 hits. The website is continuously updated with the activities of ISSE and maintained. Actions are progressing for the facelift of website.

Financial Status & Auditor

The details of audited financial statement will be presented by Treasurer, ISSE. M/s Kumar & Biju Associates was the auditor for 2016-17. Executive Committee proposes to appoint the same party for the coming fiscal year also. Acknowledgement
