It used to be matter of Churchmanship that tore Anglicans apart; Christendom was torn apart by a Creedal phrase (―and the Son‖), and by beliefs over what took place at the Eucharist and just what that holy Service meant. Now it is unity between Christian brethren that tears us apart. We are constantly able to demonstrate to the world (before whom we are witnesses to the truth of the Gospel) and to God our Father that we reject any leading of the Holy Spirit. We will live by our immediate feelings, which arise from hatreds and suspi- cions of past generations, and not by the fresh springs of spiritual grace. Our own little corner of Christianity is certainly a study in all this these past few years. When I entered the Anglican Catholic Church of Canada, I was told of our search for a union with Rome that would place us un- der the jurisdiction of the Holy See without our having to give up our Anglican ways and be absorbed into the larger whole. It seemed like an exciting prospect, although I wasn’t sure it would ever be achieved in my life- time. At Synods, the Church seemed united in moving in this direction, although when it looked like it might well become a reality, one saw the claws coming out and people beginning to drop away or turn on their brethren. At each step of the way this process has become exacerbated as personal fear, hatred, distrust and so forth have swept over people, egged on by others who have already left us so that they can remain more purely ―Anglican‖, an ever-smaller pond in which to swim. It has been a terrible time for those whose dream was to go forward as a Church into this new relationship with Rome. It has been terrible to be turned on by those we thought were brethren joined to us in faith and the Holy Spirit. It has been terrible to find that the generosity of Pope Benedict XVI seemed to be interpreted in quite another way by Roman bishops placed in charge of the process, engendering further hatred of them by the already suspicious. We thought in Canada (and elsewhere) that we would simply morph into an Ordinari- ate entity, meeting within it other Anglicans who had come in separate from us. But in Canada the Roman authorities refused to deal with us as a Diocese, as a ―Church‖.

The focus of our educational systems on popular culture, political correctness, and the cult of self-esteem has had two consequences for everyday speech. First, young people prefer to remain silent rather than risk an opinion. Secondly, when they do talk, it is in an outpouring, in the belief that one person's language is as good as any other's. Bon mots, aphorisms, insightful quotations, nuggets of wisdom, or even ordinary apt remarks form only a tiny part of their conversation. American speech, like English speech, used to sparkle. The dialogues invented by Henry James are scintillating, alert to implications, never redundant or blunt. Their stylized air is exaggerated, if at all, only in the cause of art.

This is a special occasion for Catholics for Renewal and Garratt Publishing, and I am delighted that you are here to share it. Thank Francis Sullivan To Francis Sullivan, I extend my most sincere thanks for launching our book. Francis is an outstanding Australian Catholic layman who, for five long years, undertook with commitment and integrity the task of liaising between the Australian bishops and the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. In the process he provided important impetus for the reform of our Church. We are honoured, Francis, that you accepted our invitation to launch Getting Back on Mission: Reforming our Church Together and, on behalf of Catholics for Renewal, I thank you for your kind and carefully chosen words about our book. They reaffirm our hope that it will take forward the movement for renewal. Renewal in Australia Renewal of the Church in Australia never was and never will be an easy task. Even Vatican II’s vision for renewal was slow to get off the ground here, stumbled, and slowly petered out. Early renewal groups that called for reform were usually labelled dissenters and troublemakers, and they struggled to make an impact. The fortress was strong and almost impregnable. And yet, renewal groups continued to emerge, sometimes like spot fires, breaking out spontaneously, and Catholics for Renewal was one of these.

Why would a Catholic tourist go there? Put simply, it is the Cathedral Church of Rome and since 312 AD has been the Episcopal Chair of the Popes as Bishops of Rome and where the Papacy was situated until 1377 when the Vatican became the Papal residence. St. John Lateran, however, remains the Pope’s Cathedral Church, not St. Peter’s Basilica. On the great façade, which was slightly damaged after a bomb exploded following John Paul II’s assertive preaching against the Mafia in Italy, you will find these words in Latin: THE MOST HOLY LATERAN CHURCH, MOTHER AND MISTRESS OF ALL CHURCHES OF THE CITY AND THE WORLD. It is not without significance for us Canadians that at the recent Canonization of St. Kateri Tekakwitha, St. John Lateran hosted a gathering for First Nations People at which the new documentary on her life, produced by Salt and Light Television, was premiered. St. Kateri was a simple and devout Mohawk woman who witnessed to the love of Jesus during the early years of contact between Europeans and the Indigenous Peoples of the New World—she is called the “Lily of the Mohawks.” This now leads me to my topic for this article.

    The Parish - a Community of Evangelisation.* “The parish is not an outdated institution; precisely because it possesses great flexibility, it can assume quite different contours depending on the openness and missionary creativity of the pastor and the community.” “It is a community of communities, a sanctuary where the thirsty come to drink in the midst of their journey, and a center of constant missionary outreach.” - Pope Francis, The Joy of the Gospel, # 28. The earliest communities of the Jesus Movement The earliest evidence of the social makeup, function and mission of Christian communities is found in the letters of Paul, specifically in the introduction to his letters. These references, along with other details, provide clear evidence of the authenticity of his letters. His addresses follow a close formula: Paul apostlos ..... to the ekklesia tou theou (the assembly of God) which is in.....(Corinth). Another helpful key to understanding a particular Community is its location and its social environment. Conscious of the host culture of his communities, Paul invariably highlighted their Baptismal calling to be identifiably different in the way they treated one another and their non-believing neighbours, conducted themselves as responsible members of society. Paul addressed his converts as saints, ‘agioi, the distinctive ones, those whose collective identity stood in sharp contrast with others by magnetic power of its sheer goodness. Within that related field of meanings then, it is worth noting that one of the earliest words used for the gathering place of the Jesus Communities was paroikia, a rest stop for those on a journey; a place of temporary residence in a foreign land (Acts 13: 17; 1 Pt 1: 17 ‘a place of exile’) The English word parish derives from paroikia.

    Badertscher; The Measure of a Bishop Chapter 2 Background of the “Continuing Church” Movement If one had to choose the watershed event for the Episcopal Church in the 1970s, it would probably have to be the 1977 “Congress of Concerned Churchmen,” for it was then that the traditionalists began leaving the Church in droves. Yet though the previous dissents had not hurt the Church as much numerically, they nevertheless represent important prologues to the story, for the issues which began bubbling up in the 1960s came to a full boil in the 1970s at the Congress of St. Louis. The tale stretches back even earlier, to two separate incidents the late 19th century. The dispute in the Episcopal Church between Anglo-Catholic and Evangelical led Evangelical Bishop George David Cummins, the assistant bishop of Kentucky, to resign in 1873 and form the Reformed Episcopal Church. A few years previously, the Old Catholic movement had begun in Europe, as traditionalists separated from Rome over dogmas promulgated at the First Vatican Council. Continuing Churchmen of the 20th century would in some cases take their orders from Old Catholic denominations. The third incident happened in 1921, when the Reverend George Alexander McGuire organized dissident black Episcopalians into the African Orthodox Church. Several breaks took place in the 1960s, at least two of the them in the Southern States. In 1962, the Southern Episcopal Church was founded in Nashville, Tennessee by the Reverend Burnice H. Webster. The Anglican Orthodox Church was founded in 1963 by the staunchly conservative Reverend James Parker Dees of North Carolina, who renounced the liberalism of the Episcopal Church.

    First Australian Provincial Council, 10-12 September 1844 Peter Wilkinson (This paper was first published in The Swag, Summer Edition 2017, and is republished here by Catholics For Renewal Inc. with kind permission from The Swag, 24 March 2018) This is the first of several articles examining the seven previous particular councils held in Australia between 1844 and 1937. An understanding of these councils may help to prepare for the 5th Australian Plenary Council to be held in 2020. Convening the 1844 Provincial Council On 3 September 1844, on the occasion of the consecration of Francis Murphy as first Bishop of Adelaide, Archbishop John Bede Polding OSB, Metropolitan of the new Province of Sydney, convoked the First Provincial Council of Australia. It would be celebrated at St Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney, on 10-12 September 1844, when all three bishops and most of the priests of the Province would be present. The aims of the Council were to have unity among the bishops, uniformity of ecclesiastical policy and discipline across the whole mission, worthy Eucharistic and sacramental liturgies, clear guidance to priests on living blameless lives, an effective catechesis, conversion of unbelievers to the Catholic faith, and the correction of abuses. His father was a skilled harness and saddle - maker. Immanuel‟s education, both at school and at university, was obtained in his own home town. His formal studies were in mathematics, philosophy and theology.

The apostolic constitution Anglicanorum Cœtibus is a response to petitions from groups of Anglicans to be received into communion with the Holy See in a corporate manner. This dissertation examines the origin of such petitions, the development of the principles guiding the response, and an analysis of the legislation. Chapter One traces the origins of corporate reunion from Newman to the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council, in particular the Association for Promoting the Unity of Christendom and the Malines Conversations. Chapter Two discusses the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council with respect to ecumenism and Anglicanism. It examines the establishment of relations between Anglicans and the Holy See, the Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission (ARCIC), and proposals for the corporate reunion of Anglicans in the Diocese of Amritsar, the United States, the Diocese of Matabeleland, and the United Kingdom. Chapter Three considers the overtures made by groups of Anglicans from 2005 to 2009. This includes the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA), Church of England bishops, and the Traditional Anglican Communion.
