Liturgy at Home St. James’ Anglican Church Seventh Sunday after Pentecost – July 19, 2020 Welcome We acknowledge our presence on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. Welcome to this St. James’ “Liturgy for use at home,” which will continue over the summer in parallel with the simple said service at 9.00 am in church. For the time being that will be the only public service in St. James’. Nonetheless, the Church’s life of prayer and intercession continues. Those who live close to St. James’ may hear the Angelus ring from the tower: this is an audible sign that the Church is praying for the parish, the DTES, the medical services, and for a swift resolution to this pandemic. The Daily Office will be said online via Zoom at the regular times: contact details on the website, and at the end of this bulletin. The Mass will continue to be offered regularly, even though the doors may be locked. You are invited either to share in this Liturgy at 10:30 am on Sunday, via Zoom, or to use this as an aid to your prayers at home, drawing strength, we hope, from the knowledge that fellow-parishioners will be praying alongside you. The Parish Intercession Lists, which are being kept up to date, are being prayed daily. Worldwide Communion: Episcopal and Anglican Lesson # 23 of 27 Scripture/Memory Verse [Be] eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace: There is one body and one Spirit just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call; one Lord, one Faith, one baptism, one God and Father of us all. Ephesians 4: 3 – 6 Lesson Goals & Objectives Goal: The students will gain an understanding and appreciation for the fact that we belong to a church that is larger than our own parish: we are part of The Episcopal Church (in America) which is also part of the worldwide Anglican Communion. Objectives: The students will become familiar with the meanings of the terms, Episcopal, Anglican, Communion (as referring to the larger church), ethos, standing committee, presiding bishop and general convention. The students will understand the meaning of the “Four Instruments of Unity:” The Archbishop of Canterbury; the Meeting of Primates; the Lambeth Conference of Bishops; and, the Anglican Consultative Council. The students will encounter the various levels of structure and governance in which we live as Episcopalians and Anglicans. The students will learn of and appreciate an outline of our history in the context of Anglicanism. The students will see themselves as part of a worldwide communion of fellowship and mission as Christians together with others from throughout the globe. The students will read and discuss the “Chicago-Lambeth Quadrilateral” (BCP pages 876 – 877) in order to appreciate the essentials of an Anglican identity. Introduction & Teacher Background This lesson can be as exciting to the students as you are willing to make it. -

Francis Lerow, Bishop Ordinary Missions and Decisions, Planning and Money For many of our parishes, renewal tends to be an ongoing affair. We think very hard about our home parish. All of us want our church to have impact on the community and our community to have greater access to worship and the Traditional Anglican way. We depend on our vestries to drive the wagon that ensures that proper planning and resources are available to support the annual plan established at the Annual Parish Meetings. The problem with planning is that it quickly can lose the interest of the members of the parish. It is easy to fall back into our old ways, thinking that the Sunday Worship Service is all we need to bring them to Christ and eventually membership in the Church. Or if we have a young electrifying priest that will lead the way all will be well. It would be nice if it was that easy. But, we all know it is not. So what does it take? What kind of investment of time and resources does it take to really make things happen? What will cause the kind of renewal for which we all hope and pray? The business metric used to determine the effort and cost to sell a particular item of merchandise, as a rule of thumb, is to measure how many times their product gets the attention of a potential buyer. -

ABSTRACT: Japan ruled Korea as a colony from 1910 to 1945. During this turbulent period, many Western Protestant missionaries entered Korea and began missionary work. The academic world argues that Koreans came to serve two kinds of foreign masters who entered the Korean Peninsula: Japanese imperialist invaders and Western Protestant missionaries. These missionaries divided each region of Korea and carried out missionary work to pass on their beliefs to the Koreans. Japan's colonial rule over Korea and the missionaries' religious ministry are often understood and interpreted through a framework of “cultural imperialism” of “domination and obedience,” although their ideologies and purposes were different. -

The focus of our educational systems on popular culture, political correctness, and the cult of self-esteem has had two consequences for everyday speech. First, young people prefer to remain silent rather than risk an opinion. Secondly, when they do talk, it is in an outpouring, in the belief that one person's language is as good as any other's. Bon mots, aphorisms, insightful quotations, nuggets of wisdom, or even ordinary apt remarks form only a tiny part of their conversation. American speech, like English speech, used to sparkle. The dialogues invented by Henry James are scintillating, alert to implications, never redundant or blunt. Their stylized air is exaggerated, if at all, only in the cause of art. -

Address by Dr Peter Wilkinson, President of Catholics for Renewal, at the launch of the Getting Back on Mission: Reforming Our Church Together Welcome and Thanks Welcome everyone and thank you for your presence. This is a special occasion for Catholics for Renewal and Garratt Publishing, and I am delighted that you are here to share it. Thank Francis Sullivan To Francis Sullivan, I extend my most sincere thanks for launching our book. Francis is an outstanding Australian Catholic layman who, for five long years, undertook with commitment and integrity the task of liaising between the Australian bishops and the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. In the process he provided important impetus for the reform of our Church. We are honoured, Francis, that you accepted our invitation to launch Getting Back on Mission: Reforming our Church Together and, on behalf of Catholics for Renewal, I thank you for your kind and carefully chosen words about our book. They reaffirm our hope that it will take forward the movement for renewal. Renewal in Australia Renewal of the Church in Australia never was and never will be an easy task. Even Vatican II’s vision for renewal was slow to get off the ground here, stumbled, and slowly petered out. Early renewal groups that called for reform were usually labelled dissenters and troublemakers, and they struggled to make an impact. The fortress was strong and almost impregnable. And yet, renewal groups continued to emerge, sometimes like spot fires, breaking out spontaneously, and Catholics for Renewal was one of these. -

A Sufficiently Republican Church: George David Cummins and the Reformed Episcopalians in 1873 Abstract In 1873 George David Cummins, the assistant bishop of the Episcopal diocese of Kentucky, rocked the complacency of the Protestant Episcopal Church by resigning his Kentucky episcopate and founding an entirely new Episcopal denomination, the Reformed Episcopal Church. Schismatic movements in American religion are hardly a novelty. Still, Cummins and his movement occupy a peculiar position in both the history of American religion and the cultural history of the Gilded Age. Unlike the wave of church schisms before the Civil War, the Reformed Episcopal schism of 1873 had no clear relation to sectional issues. -

The Beauty of Holiness: Anglican Worship and Sacramental Theology 1 THE CONGRESS OF TRADITIONAL ANGLICANS June 1–4, 2011 - Victoria, BC, Canada An Address by The Reverend Canon Kenneth Gunn-Walberg, Ph.D. Rector of St. Mary’s, Wilmington, Delaware After Morning Prayer Friday in Ascensiontide, June 3, 2011 THE BEAUTY OF HOLINESS: ANGLICAN WORSHIP AND SACRAMENTAL THEOLOGY When I was approached by Fr. Sinclair to make this presentation, he suggested that the conceptual framework of the lectures would be that they be positive presentations of traditional Anglican principles from both a biblical and historical perspective and in the light of the contemporary issues in contrast to traditional Anglicanism, especially as expressed in the Affirmation of St. Louis and in the 39 Articles. The rubrics attached to this paper were that Anglican worship should be examined in the light of contemporary liturgies, the Roman Rite, and the proposed revision of the Book of Common Prayer to bring it in line with Roman views. This perforce is a rather tall order; so let us begin. The late Pulitzer Prize winning poet W.H. Auden stated that the Episcopal Church “seems to have gone stark raving mad…And why? The Roman Catholics have had to start from scratch, and as any of them with a feeling for language will admit, they have made a cacophonous horror of the mass. Whereas we had the extraordinary good fortune in that our Prayer Book was composed at exactly the right historical moment. The English language had become more or less what it is today…but the ecclesiastics of the 16 th century still professed a feeling for the ritual and ceremonies which today we have almost entirely lost.” 1 While one might quibble somewhat with what he said, he certainly would have been more indignant had he witnessed me little more than a decade after his death celebrating the Eucharist before the Dean and Canons of St.
