According to sources he led an adventurous life, and spent time in out of the way colonial outposts. He composed music seemingly of substance, and for ensembles normally associated with higher class music, yet despite this, we have only one work surviving by this active musician and prolific composer. Much of his life and professional activity has been thoroughly explored in Graeme Skinner’s important thesis on early Australian composition.1 More is found in his website of Australian composers, and the accompanying chronology of Australian composition.2 Both sources are important documents.3 The birth date of Joseph Gautrot is unknown, but there are various mentions of his early life and career in an obituary in Bell’s Life of 4 February 1854.4 In the obituary he was cited as being a member of Napoleon’s Imperial Guard, probably as a musician, and was present during the Russian Campaign of 1812. -

Now - as in his lifetime - Bishop James Quinn is a controversial, and to many an unattractive, though highly significant figure of the foundation years of the Catholic Church in Queensland. My interest was aroused in discovering his true personality through my work in the history of Catholic education in this State, especially that of Mother Vincent Whitty and the first Sisters of Mercy. After several years of research I am still ambivalent towards him. I feel, however, this ambivalence is due to the paradoxes inherent in his personality rather than to any deficiency in my research. I have tried to show in this thesis the complexity of his character that these paradoxes caused. Bishop Quinn died in 1881, but the foundations of his work in Queensland were laid by 1875. To appreciate the shape of the Church that soared grandly from these foundations, to understand the conflict and the turmoil that surrounded the man and his creation, the bishop must be first seen in his original environment, Ireland and Rome. -

The focus of our educational systems on popular culture, political correctness, and the cult of self-esteem has had two consequences for everyday speech. First, young people prefer to remain silent rather than risk an opinion. Secondly, when they do talk, it is in an outpouring, in the belief that one person's language is as good as any other's. Bon mots, aphorisms, insightful quotations, nuggets of wisdom, or even ordinary apt remarks form only a tiny part of their conversation. American speech, like English speech, used to sparkle. The dialogues invented by Henry James are scintillating, alert to implications, never redundant or blunt. Their stylized air is exaggerated, if at all, only in the cause of art. -

Address by Dr Peter Wilkinson, President of Catholics for Renewal, at the launch of the Getting Back on Mission: Reforming Our Church Together Welcome and Thanks Welcome everyone and thank you for your presence. This is a special occasion for Catholics for Renewal and Garratt Publishing, and I am delighted that you are here to share it. Thank Francis Sullivan To Francis Sullivan, I extend my most sincere thanks for launching our book. Francis is an outstanding Australian Catholic layman who, for five long years, undertook with commitment and integrity the task of liaising between the Australian bishops and the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. In the process he provided important impetus for the reform of our Church. We are honoured, Francis, that you accepted our invitation to launch Getting Back on Mission: Reforming our Church Together and, on behalf of Catholics for Renewal, I thank you for your kind and carefully chosen words about our book. They reaffirm our hope that it will take forward the movement for renewal. Renewal in Australia Renewal of the Church in Australia never was and never will be an easy task. Even Vatican II’s vision for renewal was slow to get off the ground here, stumbled, and slowly petered out. Early renewal groups that called for reform were usually labelled dissenters and troublemakers, and they struggled to make an impact. The fortress was strong and almost impregnable. And yet, renewal groups continued to emerge, sometimes like spot fires, breaking out spontaneously, and Catholics for Renewal was one of these. -

Commitment gives life to the purpose we have. It is the lived out witness to the vision we carry, and the tangible expression of the deep faith we have. The way we express our commitment is as unique as we are. But it will be nurtured in us all by a personal prayer life, and characterized by engagement with the world that is respectful, empowering and hopeful. 1. Article: The Australian Religious Landscape through Catholic Eyes, on the Eve of World Youth Day 2008 by Fr. Frank Brennan (Published as “Ein Weltjugendtag an gottlosem Ort? – Die kirchliche und religiose Landschaft Australiens” Herder Korrspondenz July 2008, pp. 345-9 (German abstract here)) James Denney, a nineteenth century Scottish Presbyterian theologian, described Australia as “the most godless place under heaven”. The label is often taken as the starting point for discussing the religious sensibility of Australians who live in a markedly secular, materialistic society founded upon the dispossession of the Aborigines who had inhabited the land for up to 60,000 years. The British were the first Europeans to establish a permanent settlement on Australian soil. They erected a penal colony at Sydney Cove, asserting sovereignty in the name of the British Crown on 26 January 1788. No treaty was negotiated with the Aborigines. No compensation was paid for the state-authorised confiscation of their lands. It took until 1992 for the Australian courts to recognise that Aborigines had rights to land which survived the assertion of British sovereignty. -

The best outweighs the worst, so let me start with what I found wonderful about the gathering. First of all, our Episcopal Delegate, Toronto Archbishop Thomas Collins threw such a lavish welcome for us is a sign the Holy Father‘s offer in the Apostolic Constitution Anglicanorum coetibus is real and that progress towards reunion with the Holy See is taking place. -

THE zeal and earnestness of Dr. Polding very soon secured for him considerable influence with the Colonial authorities. It was impossible not to admire such single-minded devotion to duty and the work of saving souls, and the Government and its officials were not slow to offer their co-operation in all that tended to the amelioration of the people. He built churches wherever they were needed, founded schools and obtained Government support for an orphanage for destitute Catholic children, which he placed under the care of some devoted nuns. It is astonishing how rapidly he was able to raise the Catholic population from their depression. One of his first efforts was to establish a newspaper, in which he taught them to assert their civil rights, and to maintain their position worthily and with confidence among their fellow men. Several measures hostile to Catholics, which had been inspired by the old traditions of the then strong party, and even some which were oppressive to the people in general, were defeated when brought into the old Legislative Council through the influ ence Dr. Polding exercised over public opinion. “A glorious future for the infant diocese of Armidale”: The emerging Church in New England Historical Oration on the 150th Anniversary of the Installation of the First Bishop Cathedral of Sts Mary & Joseph, Armidale, 9 March 2021 My Lord Bishop, Reverend Fathers, fellow religious, brothers and sisters in Christ: it is a great honour to take part in your sesquicentenary celebrations and let me say that I think you are all looking very good for 150-year-olds! 1. Before Armidale was… Fr Therry 32 years they had waited for a priest. Sure, a convict priest (Fr James Dixon) had been permitted to celebrate Mass for ten months in 1803;1 a renegade priest (Fr Jeremiah O’Flynn) conducted a semi-public ministry for six months in 1818;2 and other convict priests and passing ships’ chaplains engaged in clandestine ministry from time to time. But it was only with the arrival of Frs Philip Conolly3 and John Joseph Therry4 in 1820, as official Catholic chaplains to the colony, that the Catholics of Australia were guaranteed the sacraments and pastoral leadership going forward.5 The faith and pastoral achievements of Fr Therry and the other clergy who came after him were remarkable. But many of them were also what we used to call ‘characters’. When Australia’s first Dominican, Christopher Dowling OP, arrived in 1831 to take over as official chaplain, Therry locked him out of the presbytery. On one occasion Therry dragged Dowling from the sanctuary before coming to his senses and apologizing. On another there was a public tug-o-war over the collection box! It was also alleged he had three heavies beat Dowling up in front of St Mary’s and steal his hat and watch! The meek Dominican then retreated to the relative safety of Western Sydney. -

Why would a Catholic tourist go there? Put simply, it is the Cathedral Church of Rome and since 312 AD has been the Episcopal Chair of the Popes as Bishops of Rome and where the Papacy was situated until 1377 when the Vatican became the Papal residence. St. John Lateran, however, remains the Pope’s Cathedral Church, not St. Peter’s Basilica. On the great façade, which was slightly damaged after a bomb exploded following John Paul II’s assertive preaching against the Mafia in Italy, you will find these words in Latin: THE MOST HOLY LATERAN CHURCH, MOTHER AND MISTRESS OF ALL CHURCHES OF THE CITY AND THE WORLD. It is not without significance for us Canadians that at the recent Canonization of St. Kateri Tekakwitha, St. John Lateran hosted a gathering for First Nations People at which the new documentary on her life, produced by Salt and Light Television, was premiered. St. Kateri was a simple and devout Mohawk woman who witnessed to the love of Jesus during the early years of contact between Europeans and the Indigenous Peoples of the New World—she is called the “Lily of the Mohawks.” This now leads me to my topic for this article. -

The Parish - a Community of Evangelisation.* “The parish is not an outdated institution; precisely because it possesses great flexibility, it can assume quite different contours depending on the openness and missionary creativity of the pastor and the community.” “It is a community of communities, a sanctuary where the thirsty come to drink in the midst of their journey, and a center of constant missionary outreach.” - Pope Francis, The Joy of the Gospel, # 28. The earliest communities of the Jesus Movement The earliest evidence of the social makeup, function and mission of Christian communities is found in the letters of Paul, specifically in the introduction to his letters. These references, along with other details, provide clear evidence of the authenticity of his letters. His addresses follow a close formula: Paul apostlos ..... to the ekklesia tou theou (the assembly of God) which is in.....(Corinth). Another helpful key to understanding a particular Community is its location and its social environment. Conscious of the host culture of his communities, Paul invariably highlighted their Baptismal calling to be identifiably different in the way they treated one another and their non-believing neighbours, conducted themselves as responsible members of society. Paul addressed his converts as saints, ‘agioi, the distinctive ones, those whose collective identity stood in sharp contrast with others by magnetic power of its sheer goodness. Within that related field of meanings then, it is worth noting that one of the earliest words used for the gathering place of the Jesus Communities was paroikia, a rest stop for those on a journey; a place of temporary residence in a foreign land (Acts 13: 17; 1 Pt 1: 17 ‘a place of exile’) The English word parish derives from paroikia.
