My worK on Grapes of Wrath was based far more on my in- rehearsal experience. For this reason, I digitally captured much of the rehearsal process, which may be found as an appendix to my written work on Tribes and Oleanna. -

Oviedo, Ph.D., Committee Member Michael Koskey, Ph.D., Department Chair Todd Sherman, M.F.A., Dean, College of Liberal Arts Michael Castellini, Ph.D., Dean of the Graduate School Abstract This research project seeks to deconstruct the history of the horse in the Americas and its relationship with the Indigenous Peoples of these same lands. Although Western academia admits that the horse originated in the Americas, it claims that the horse became extinct in these continents during the Last Glacial Maximum (between roughly 13,000 and 11,000 years ago). This version of “history” credits Spanish conquistadors and other early European explorers with reintroducing the horse to the Americas and to her Indigenous Peoples. However, many Native Nations state that “they always had the horse” and that they had well established horse cultures long before the arrival of the Spanish. To date, “history” has been written by Western academia to reflect a Eurocentric and colonial paradigm. The traditional knowledge (TK) of the Indigenous Peoples of the Americas, and any information that is contrary to the accepted Western academic view, has been generally disregarded, purposefully excluded, or reconfigured to fit the accepted academic paradigm. -

A Feminist View on the Oslo Process The Case of the Palestinian Women’s Movement Yuki Nakao A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment for the Degree of Master of Public Policy Graduate School of Public Policy The University of Tokyo Supervised by Professor Kiichi Fujiwara December, 2019 Abstract This thesis offers a feminist alternative to the gender-blind mainstream analyses of the Palestine-Israel peace process and the 1993 Oslo Agreement, through a process- tracing case study of the Palestinian women’s movement. Drawing upon feminist international relations theories and social movement theories, this study qualitatively analyzes the political environment within which the Palestinian women’s movement has operated. Specifically, it explores and documents what has changed in the pre-Oslo to post-Oslo political environment and what role the Oslo Agreement played in causing this shift. I argue that the emphasis on the state and security in the Oslo process has impeded genuine efforts to promote a democratic system that safeguards human rights and citizenship rights. Major political players – the Palestinian Authority, international donors, and the Israeli government – contributed in different ways in fomenting a hostile environment for women as a result of the security-centric policies being prioritized at every turn. The transformation of the Palestinian women’s movement, from a vibrant force of resistance and democratization during the pre-Oslo period to its fragmentation and inefficacy during the post-Oslo period, reveals how the Palestinian state-making process and once-celebrated peace deal was in fact hostile towards Palestinian women, and detrimental to the advancement of their rights and freedom. -

Growing Tribes: Reality Theatre and Columbus’ Gay and Lesbian Community Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Shannon Savard, M.A. Graduate Program in Theatre The Ohio State University 2018 Thesis Committee: Dr. Beth Kattelman, Adviser Dr. Jennifer Schlueter Copyright by Shannon Savard 2018 Abstract Reality Theatre provides a rich example of a professional theatre company which operated in a Midwestern city and directly engaged with both the local gay and lesbian community and performed primarily gay and lesbian plays, challenging the trend of what Judith Halberstam terms metronormativity in queer studies. Reality's Tribes represents a series of community-based performances which were explicitly created by, for, and about Columbus, Ohio’s local gay and lesbian community. Tribes was a performance created collectively by the members of Reality Theatre and included sketch comedy, vignettes, monologues, and songs written in direct response to happenings in the local gay and lesbian community as well as the larger political arena. The series of performances which were adapted and restaged eight times over the course of fourteen years was directly rooted in the gay and lesbian community of Columbus, Ohio. This thesis examines Tribes through the lenses of Jan Cohen-Cruz’s conception of community-based theatre and the theatre as a space of gay and lesbian community building. Reality Theatre carved out a space in Columbus’ theatrical landscape which presumed the gay and lesbian viewpoint to be the norm and reimagined mainstream pop culture forms to fit it.
