Report No 844/03 Report No. 844/03 ANGUS COUNCIL DEVELOPMENT CONTROL COMMITTEE 14 AUGUST 2003 DELEGATED APPROVALS REPORT BY THE DIRECTOR OF PLANNING & TRANSPORT Abstract: This report recommends that the Committee notes the applications detailed in Appendix 1 of the report granted by the Director of Planning & Transport in accordance with the Scheme of Delegation detailed in Standing Orders. 1.0 RECOMMENDATION 1.1 The Committee is asked to note the applications, detailed in the Appendix, granted approval under delegated powers. 2.0 INTRODUCTION 2.1 In terms of the Scheme of Delegation to officers, the Director of Planning & Transport is authorised to approve planning applications in accordance with the Development Plan, the Local Plans or established policies and where there are no objections, except those which raise a general issue affecting a large area, or are of major land or economic development significance. 3.0 APPROVALS 3.1 Attached as an Appendix is a list of applications granted under delegated authority during the period 3 July 2003 to 6 August 2003. 4.0 FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS 4.1 There are no financial implications. 5.0 HUMAN RIGHTS IMPLICATIONS 5.1 There are no Human Rights issues arising directly as a result of this report. 6.0 CONSULTATION 6.1 The Chief Executive, Director of Law & Administration and Director of Roads have been consulted in the preparation of this report.     1 The Cistercian Abbey of Coupar Angus, c.1164-c.1560 Victoria Anne Hodgson University of Stirling Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy August 2016 2 3 Abstract This thesis is an examination of the Cistercian abbey of Coupar Angus, c.1164-c.1560, and its place within Scottish society. The subject of medieval monasticism in Scotland has received limited scholarly attention and Coupar itself has been almost completely overlooked, despite the fact that the abbey possesses one of the best sets of surviving sources of any Scottish religious house. Moreover, in recent years, long-held assumptions about the Cistercian Order have been challenged and the validity of Order-wide generalisations disputed. Historians have therefore highlighted the importance of dedicated studies of individual houses and the need to incorporate the experience of abbeys on the European ‘periphery’ into the overall narrative. This thesis considers the history of Coupar in terms of three broadly thematic areas. The first chapter focuses on the nature of the abbey’s landholding and prosecution of resources, as well as the monks’ burghal presence and involvement in trade. The second investigates the ways in which the house interacted with wider society outside of its role as landowner, particularly within the context of lay piety, patronage and its intercessory function. The final chapter is concerned with a more strictly ecclesiastical setting and is divided into two parts. The first considers the abbey within the configuration of the Scottish secular church with regards to parishes, churches and chapels. The second investigates the strength of Cistercian networks, both domestic and international.

New houses have been built and manses, and even mansion houses, have been converted to new uses. What used to be a predominantly agricultural community has now changed forever. THE COCHRANES OF RENFREWSHIRE. The family name of Cochrane, in early times, is to be found almost exclusively in Renfrewshire and the bordering counties. This is ac­ counted for in the derivation of the name. Like other Scottish fami lies it is a place name, the family deriving it from the barony of Cochran. Crawford states, in his description of the shire of Renfrew, that the name is of great antiquity in this shire. The most prominent of the name at an early period was Waldevus de Cochran, whose son William was one of the Scotch barons who swore fealty to Edward I. of England in 1296. John de Cochran was of prominence in Robert Bruce's time, and from him were descended the Cochranes of Bar­ bachly, located in the parish of Bathgate, where we still find the farm and mill of Barbauchlaw. The lands of the ancient barony of Cochrane were across the Black Cart Water, opposite Johnstone, and were held by the Cochranes till sold by Thomas, eighth Earl Dundonald, to James Milliken, Esq., of Milliken, whose daughter Jean married Col. William Na pier of Cul­ creuch, into whose family the lands then came. A century ago part of the old manor house was still standing, and one of the old vaults was used as a cart house.
