Secretary of State John Kerry lauded the men for their composure during a tense moment, in 1961, when they emerged from the building to find a large crowd between them and the flagpole. "No one felt safe. But the Marines had a mission to accomplish. And slowly, the crowd just parted in front of them as they made their way to the flagpole, lowered Old Glory, folded it and re- turned to the building," Kerry said. He added that the Marines vowed back then they would return to raise the flag, although nobody could have imagined how many years would pass. "This is your cue to deliver on words that would make any diplomat proud," Kerry said, "just as they would any member of the United States Marine Corps: Promise made, promise kept. Thank you." In comments published on a U.S. State Department blog post, East recalled the moment when Washington and Havana broke off diplomatic relations at the height of Cold War tensions. "It was a touching moment," East said. "To see Old Glory flying for the last time in Cuba, it was .... just didn't seem right." Morris said he had been stationed on the island for just four and a half months, but he "enjoyed the people and Cuba better than any place I've ever been."

The Museum of the Marine is designed to pay tribute to these exceptional men and women - the Carolina Marines – whose train- ing prepared them for service and leadership in the defense of our country and freedom worldwide. Within the walls of this 40,000-square-foot facility, we will tell the stories of the Carolina Marines, their units, bases and stations and epic battles, and of the Carolina communities that have sup- ported them. The Museum of the Marine will showcase the history of the Caro- lina Marines through a series of themed galleries which will con- tain both artifacts and interactive exhibits. The visitor will expe- rience history in a manner designed to leave a lasting impression of these gallant warriors, the Carolina Marines. America’s true 911 Force. We invite you to learn more about the Museum of the Marine, to share our vision and to walk proudly with us as we plan, fund, and build it.

How does this work?

Must eat to supervise !

We left Raleigh Friday afternoon and camped at Merchants Millpond State Park in Gatesville, NC and set up camp just before dark. The next morning we had an excellent chow at the campsite then efficiently broke camp and went down the road to Merchants Millpond cypress swamp for canoeing. After a fun morning of canoeing we transported to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, had lunch and went to Bodie Island Light House in Nags Head where they got to climb the lighthouse and explore the wetlands surrounding. We then drove a short distance to Coquinta Beach where the kids were able to enjoy some time in the surf and sand of the Atlantic Ocean. The kids cleaned up well and we drove North to visit the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills. By now being chow time, we drove a short distance to Henry's Beef and Seafood for a special dinner. After a fantastic meal we set out for Manns Harbor to set up camp for the night where we enjoyed s'mores around the campfire. The next morning's chow was excellent before we broke camp and departed for the North Carolina Aquarium in Manteo where we split into smaller groups and explored the aquarium. The final leg of the trip was spent having fun on the sand dunes of Jockey's Ridge back in Kill Devil Hills before enjoying some pizza for lunch and hitting the road back to Raleigh. It was a packed weekend with many great memories made and I hope these pictures help give you an idea of the fun we had. I would like to truly thank the members of the Tar Heel Detachment of the Marine Corps League for ensuring those Young Marines without means were able to participate in this activity. Your support is appreciated more than we can express and we are so grateful for your donations. Doug Smith, Unit Commander, Capital City Young Marines MCL National Convention
