To All Members : November, 2010

Hope everyone had a good time this month celebrating the 235th Birthday of our beloved Marine Corps. As Marines, we are very fortunate to have such history and traditions that are handed down, as they help to instill the pride and honor that motivates Marines to be the best fighters in the world. If the Army, Navy, and Air Force ever understood the Marines embracement of it’s history and traditions , they would certainly, no longer dub us “brainwashed”. Of course, as Marine Corps Leaguer’s, we are now motivated to throw some of the meanest parties the world. There- fore, I would like to thank everyone that attended this years Birthday Ball, especially those members who sat on this years Ball committee and sold program ads. Your hard work and effort made it all possible. Good Job! This past weekend, some of us had the honor of being able to attend the Commissioning of the USS Jason Dunham (DDG 109) in Port Everglades. The ships namesake was dedicated to Marine Lcpl. Jason Lee Dunham , who was the first Marine recipient since the . In 2004, while on patrol with Kilo 3/7 in Karabilah, Iraq, the 22-year-old got in a scuffle with an enemy combatant who threw a grenade at the patrol. In a selfless act, Lcpl. Dunham threw his helmet and then his body on top of the grenade in order to save the lives of two other Marines. Unfortunately, Dunham had succumbed to his injuries and passed away a week later. During his speech, the ships Capitain, Commander M. Scott Sciretta, recognized one of those surviving squad members, who was in attendance with his wife and two young children, noting that these children wouldn’t be here today if not for the courage of Jason Dunham, and stating this was further proof that he was truly, a giver of life. Needless to say, there was a noticeable wave of emotion over the crowd following his comment. Also, it was only fitting that the senior member speaker of the day was the Commandant of the Marine Corps, General James F. Amos who stated , "We name our war-fighting capital ships after presidents, cities, and great battles, but we've not named one after a young Marine that I'm aware of." This all made for a great day in our Marine Corps history and for the City of Fort Lauderdale, as well. ! Before I go, please remember that we will be collecting canned and dry-good foods at this months membership meeting (11/18/10), to help feed the needy during the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. Please see page 11 for a list of needed items. Take care and have a great Thanksgiving.

Commandant Vulpis then asked Past Comdt .Bart Reno on how his ailing mother was fairing and Reno reported that she was not doing well. Comdt. Vulpis replied that he and the Detachment were very sorry and that we would keep her in our thoughts and prayers.

Old Business: 1. USS Jason Dunham Commissioning status. Some members were complaining that they had not received their formal invitations to attend the event. Comdt. Vulpis replied that the invitation process was running behind and that everyone should get their pass, prior to the event. 2. Trike Donation status. Jr. Vice Comdt. Marty Winston reported that the production of Trikes are no longer assembled by the “Pioneers” volunteer organization and are now produced by a for profit company at the cost of around $1000.00 per Trike. Being that the Trikes are now 4 times the cost they were in the past, the Detachment has decided it is no longer viable to purchase and donate the item. Commandant Vulpis then reminded the Detachment that we are a veterans service organization and we have a responsibility to serve and assist our local community, and asked that everyone keep an eye out for any legitimate, needy people or organizations that could use our help. 3. Washington D.C./ Quantico Trip: Senoir Vice Commandant Scott Egan stated that the trip was still being planned on. Marine David Benner recommended that we look into traveling by the Amtrak Auto Train, as it could be an inexpensive way to travel and would cut out the planning and cost for transportation in the Quantico/D.C. Area. Commandant Vulpis stated that he would look into it. NOV 2010 THE SCUTTLEBUTT NEWSLETTER PAGE 3

MARINE CORPS ORDERS No. 47 (Series 1921) HEADQUARTERS U.S. MARINE CORPS Washington, November 1, 1921

759. The following will be read to the command on the 10th of November, 1921, and hereafter on the 10th of November of every year. Should the order not be received by the 10th of November, 1921, it will be read upon receipt.

1. On , 1775, a Corps of Marines was created by a resolution of Continental Congress. Since that date many thousand men have borne the name "Marine". In memory of them it is fitting that we who are Marines should commemorate the birthday of our corps by calling to mind the glories of its long and illustrious history. 2. The record of our corps is one which will bear comparison with that of the most famous military organizations in the world's history. During 90 of the 146 years of its existence the Marine Corps has been in action against the Nation's foes. From the Battle of Trenton to the Argonne, Marines have won foremost honors in war, and is the long eras of tranquility at home, generation after generation of Ma- rines have grown gray in war in both hemi- spheres and in every corner of the seven seas, that our country and its citizens might enjoy peace and security. 3. In every battle and skirmish since the birth of our corps, Marines have acquitted themselves with the greatest distinction, winning new honors on each occasion until the term "Marine" has come to signify all that is highest in military efficiency and soldierly virtue. 4. This high name of distinction and soldierly repute we who are Marines today Col Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller cuts the Marine Corps birthday cake in 1950, during a brief reprieve in battle during the Korean War. have received from those who preceded us in the corps. With it we have also re- ceived from them the eternal spirit which has animated our corps from generation to generation and has been the distinguishing mark of the Marines in every age. So long as that spirit continues to flourish Marines will be found equal to every emergency in the future as they have been in the past, and the men of our Nation will regard us as worthy successors to the long line of illustrious men who have served as "Soldiers of the Sea" since the founding of the Corps.

USMC History Quiz

Who am I?

I am a Marine Officer commissioned in 1883. I served in the Philippines during Insurrection where I commanded a battalion, a regiment and a brigade of U.S. Marines. I brought my regiment, the 5th Marines, to France where the Marine Corps units were combined and was promoted to Briga- dier General in October 1917, taking command of the 4th Ma- rines in the Army's 2nd Division, the Indian Head, Second to None.

The 4th Marine Brigade consisted of the 5th and 6th Regiments and the 6th Machine Gun Battalion. I brought this Brigade to a high state of efficiency enabling it to withstand and achieve victory against the onslaught of the German Army at Chateau-Thierry and Belleau Wood.

In France I became increasingly and dangerously ill of what was assumed to be overwork and the stress of the responsibilities on my shoulders. I was invalided back to the U.S. to take command of the Marine Corps Base at Quantico. I was Commandant at Quantico for only about one month before passing away. I am buried in Section 5 of Arlington National Cemetery. I has been suggested that while in France, I was exposed to the first wave of what would eventually become known as the deadly Spanish Flu becoming one of the early victims of the disease.

VA Publishes Final Regulation on “Presumptive” Illnesses for Gulf War and Iraq, Afghanistan Veterans

Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki today announced the publication of a final regulation in the Federal Register that makes it easier for Veterans to obtain Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care and disability compensation for certain diseases associated with service in Southwest Asia (including Iraq) or Afghanistan. “This is part of historic changes in how VA considers Gulf War Veterans’ illnesses,” said Secretary Shinseki. “By setting up scientifically based presumptions of service connection, we give these deserving Veterans a simple way to obtain the medical and compensation benefits they earned in service to our country.” The final regulation establishes new presumptions of service connection for nine specific infectious diseases associated with military service in Southwest Asia beginning on or after the start of the first Gulf War on Aug. 2, 1990, through the conflict in Iraq and on or after Sept. 19, 2001, in Afghanistan. The final regulation reflects a determination of a positive association between service in Southwest Asia or Afghanistan and nine diseases and includes information about the long-term health effects potentially associated with these diseases: Brucellosis, Campylobacter jejuni, Coxiella Burnetii (Q fever), Malaria, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Non typhoid Salmonella, Shigella, Visceral leishmaniasis and West Nile virus. With the final rule, a Veteran will only have to show service in Southwest Asia or Afghanistan and that he or she had one of the nine diseases within a certain time after service and has a current disability as a result of that disease, subject to certain time limits for seven of the diseases. Most of these diseases would be diagnosed within one year of return from service, through some conditions may manifest at a later time. For non-presumptive conditions, a Veteran is required to provide medical evidence to establish an actual connection between military service in Southwest Asia or Afghanistan and a specific disease. For information about health problems associated with military service in Southwest Asia and Afghanistan, and rellated VA programsVA programs, go to www.publichealth.va.gov/exposures/gulf war/ and www.publichealth.va.gov/exposures/oefoif/index.asp.
