Muchos de estos usuarios emigraron a otros cibermundos y lugares digitales llevando consigo sus identidades de There y desarrollando un flujo de actividad dentro de Internet al que he denominado “ciberdiáspora”. La tesis se divide en tres partes. La primera parte presenta una introducción al objeto de estudio a través de una revisión teórica que aborda algunas cuestiones específicas sobre los cibermundos: ¿Qué son exactamente los cibermundos? ¿Por qué debemos estudiarlos? ¿Qué los diferencia de otros medios similares como los videojuegos o la Realidad Virtual? ¿Cómo entienden los usuarios su experiencia en los cibermundos? ¿Qué sabemos acerca de la gente que se conecta a ellos? ¿Qué tipos de identidad y comunidad podemos encontrar dentro de ellos? La segunda parte presenta la metodología utilizada para realizar la investigación y cómo se fue redefiniendo y adaptando a lo largo de la misma. La metodología empleada puede ser descrita como una “ciberetnografía multi-situada” puesto que engloba exploraciones etnográficas en más de un lugar digital, siguiendo un proceso de ciberdiáspora originado y desarrollado dentro de Internet. Por último, la tercera parte es el relato etnográfico resultante de la investigación que realicé con una particular “ciberetnicidad” dentro de Internet: los denominados “thereianos”, miembros del cibermundo There.com. La historia de la ciberdiáspora There es la historia de los lazos que sus miembros formaron antes y después del cierre de este cibermundo. Es una historia acerca de su determinación por permanecer juntos y sus esfuerzos por reconfigurar y reconstruir su identidad grupal y su cultura en el espacio de Internet. Abstract This doctoral thesis is an ethnographic study of users from There.com and what they did when this cyberworld closed on March 9th 2010. Many of them migrated to other cyberworlds and digital places, carrying their There identities with them and developing a flux of activity within the Internet that I have called “cyberdiaspora”. The thesis is divided in three parts. Part I presents an introduction to the topic through a theoretical review that addresses some specific research questions regarding cyberworlds: What, exactly, are cyberworlds? Why should we study them? What differentiates them from other similar media such as videogames or Virtual Reality? How do users understand cyberworlds? What do we know about people playing them? What types of identity and community construction can be found within them? Part II details the methodology used to conduct the research and how it was redefined and adapted over the course of the research. This methodology can be described as a “multi-sited cyberethnography” since it involves ethnographic explorations in more than one digital place, closely following a process of cyberdiaspora originated and developed within the Internet. Finally, Part III is the resulting ethnographic account of the research I made with a particular “cyberethnicity” within the Internet: the so-called “therians” or “thereians”, members of the cyberworld There.com. The story of the There cyberdiaspora is the story of the bounds their members formed before and after the closure of this particular cyberworld. It is a story about their determination to remain together and their efforts to reconfigure and recreate their unique group identity and their culture across the Internet. Un viaje intelectual, electrónico y físico que, como la vida misma, ha tenido varios momentos y etapas, en diferentes ciudades, en diferentes contextos, en diferentes realidades. Esta tesis es también un reflejo de todas esas situaciones y sentimientos: esas despedidas en el aeropuerto, esos reencuentros en el mismo, esas llamadas por Skype y por Viber, esos mensajes por WhatsApp, esos intercambios de imágenes, esos cumpleaños en la distancia, etc. Todo ello implica no sólo a mis padres sino a toda mi familia, en especial a mi hermano Álvaro, a mis abuelos Francisco y Milagros, y a mi tío Javier. Esta tesis es también para ellos.     7 Multi-Player Online Role-Playing Games Mark Chen; Riley Leary; Jon Peterson; David Simkins This chapter describes multiplayer online role-playing games (MORPGs) where players participate through networked connections to collectively build a narrative or experience with a game that persists independent of who is logged in. We discuss two main traditions of these games (see Chapter 8 for an emerging tradition): 1. Multi-User Dungeons (MUDs), and 2. Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs). MUDs and MMORPGs generally allow for a “massive” amount of players—sometimes hundreds, thousands, or tens of thousands of players who simultaneously engage in the same game. Most MUDs and MMORPGs feature worlds where players log in at any time to visit, providing players with a persistent world independent of who is logged in. A variety of agents are at play shaping the multiplayer online RPG form. Creators have introduced novel game systems or narratives while dealing with the affordances of what everyone agrees is an RPG, but creators are also constrained by the technologies of their time rather than inherent limitations in RPGs. There also exists a parallel history in non-digital RPGs and computer role-playing games (CRPGs) that influence the online games. Thus the evolution of MORPGs is not channeled through just one tradition. Thankfully, first-hand accounts of the history of the multiplayer online RPG industry (Bartle, 2010) and first-hand accounts of design and management decisions for specific games (e.g. Morningstar & Farmer, 1991; Curtis, 1996; Mulligan & Patrovsky, 2003) exist. One thing these accounts lack is scrutiny from scholars across multiple disciplines, studying specific player phenomena in online gaming, so this chapter complements the historical timeline with notable scholarly research on player behavior and community engagement.

For others, the very idea that one could capture the meaning of a word in a list of defining features is flawed, because language and meaning-making do not work that way (Wittgenstein 1963). Still, we use the word “game” every day and, generally, understand each other when we do so. Among game scholars and professionals, we debate “game” definitions with fervor and sophistication. And yet, while we usually agree with some on some aspects, we never seem to agree with everyone on all. At most, we agree on what we disagree about – that is, what disagreements we consider important for understanding and defining “games” (Stenros 2014). What is true for “games” holds doubly for “role-playing games”. In fact, role- playing games (RPGs) are maybe the most contentious game phenomenon: the exception, the outlier, the not-quite-a-game game. In their foundational game studies text Rules of Play, Salen and Zimmerman (2004, 80) acknowledge that their definition of a game (“a system in which players engage in an artificial conflict, defined by rules, that results in a quantifiable outcome”) considers RPGs a borderline case.

Many things, obviously. But the most daring thing is to create stable communities in which the terrible disease of loneliness can be cured.” — Kurt Vonnegut, 1974 Multiplayer games can help build a player’s social support network. What would game design look like if our goals included reducing loneliness, decreasing toxicity and boosting a player’s positive connections with others? This paper looks at how we might use economics, an often dehumanizing and antisocial discipline, to support prosocial design goals. A multiplayer game can impact our player’s social health. By designing poorly, we can do great harm. The two most likely negative outcomes are loneliness and toxicity. The loneliness epidemic Loneliness is a significantly studied phenomenon in medical and psychological literature. It is a kind of social pain that is known to have physical, emotional, and mental consequences under prolonged exposure. Loneliness has been medically associated with all-cause mortality, depression, and more. In aggregate, chronic loneliness is estimated to shorten lifespan by an average of 15 years. Loneliness causes stress in humans broadly, relating to feelings of vulnerability, and can also provoke scarcity mindset, in which a host of negative outcomes occur. Scarcity mindset is a stress-induced “tunnel visioned” state that causes short term thinking associated with long term net negative outcomes. There is some evidence that heavy game use is significantly positively correlated with loneliness in youth, though further study on this subject specifically is needed.

This thesis argues that the Internet can be used not just as a conduit for information, but as a context for learning through community-supported collaborative construction. A ÒconstructionistÓ approach to use of the Internet makes particularly good use of its educational potential.     Vishnu and the Videogame: The Videogame Avatar and Hindu Philosophy Dr Souvik Mukherjee, IIT Delhi In 1986, Chip Morningstar, designer of the videogame Habitat , tied the ‘ Sanskrit term “ avatar ” to [one’s] real-time presence in an online world’ (Global Neighbourhood 2011). Soon after, the novelist Neal Stephenson popularized this usage in Snow Crash (1992) and in little over a decade, the word has gained phenomenal currency in Game Studies, discussions of gameplay, virtual reality, social networking and even in a blockbuster film. This, arguably, is more popular than the original Sanskrit usage. The concept of the avatar is the key point of departure for analyses of in-game identity and involvement. What relationship players have with their avatars has always been a moot question for Games Studies scholars. There are, obviously, extremes such as the avatar in James Cameron’s film where the protagonist’s consciousness seamlessly leaves his human body and wakes up into his avatar body. He is also able, at the end of the story, to sever ties forever with his real body and remain as his avatar. This seamlessness, although claimed as the characteristic experience of gameplay in early Game Studies theory, is too simplistic a description of the relationship between players and their online presence. Likewise, the description of the avatar as the ‘graphical representation of the user’s alter-ego’ is also extremely limited. In videogames, the player and the avatar can operate in complex ways such as when the player is simultaneously aware of and experiencing both her non-game and in-game identities.
