MOBILE MEDIA TECHNOLOGY AND POPULAR MOBILE GAMES IN CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY Hyung-Min Kim Abstract: With the advent of smartphones, the global mobile applications market has increased exponentially. In particular, mobile games have become extremely popular. As such, this study explores which mobile technologies have been used in mobile games, and their relation to contemporary mobile gamers’ download choices. Apple’s App Store chart and Google Play chart were utilized to analyze the common technological and gaming design features of the contemporary mobile games that are most popular with the gamers, and also to examine similarities and differences between the most popular smartphone and tablet computer games. The results show that popular mobile games maximize players’ touch-based enjoyment (i.e., swiping, sliding or drawing). In addition, the popular mobile games have at least two of the following features: simple rules, social interactions, and the removal of enemies and missions that do not require defeating an enemy to complete. Mobile games that require careful controls, such as tilting the screen or fast and unpredictable movements, tended to be more downloaded on the iPad than on the iPhone. In terms of ranking fluctuations, the paid iOS game charts were statistically more stable than the free iOS game charts. Author: Backe, Hans-Joachim Title: Within the Mainstream: An Ecocritical Framework for Digital Game History Within the Mainstream: An Ecocritical Framework for Digital Game History Hans-Joachim Backe IT University of Copenhagen, Denmark [email protected] Abstract Ecocriticism of digital games has so far engaged with a rather small corpus of examples, often prescriptively and with a quite limited methodological toolkit. This essay systematizes and historicizes some of these commonly found limitations of past research and proposes methods for a more historically and generically diverse exploration of ecological thinking vis-à-vis digital games. The majority of discussions of games from an ecocritical perspective has applied concepts and frameworks borrowed from literature and film studies, thus privileging surface semiotics over game mechanics. More methodically aware studies have oriented themselves toward the popular framework of procedural rhetoric (Bogost 2007), resulting both in a selection bias towards serious games and an author-centric, intentionalist slant inherent in the approach. In general, the discussion revolves around a small number of games with apparent ecocritical potential, such as Myst (Cyan 1993) or Farmville (Zynga 2009), resulting in a selective, a-historic and therefore distorted discussion of ecology in the diverse medium of digital games. This essay discusses strategies for dealing with a larger corpus of digital games through a descriptive matrix for identifying and analyzing the ecological dimension of digital games. It proposes an extension of the ecocritical toolkit by including a more user-centered, ethics-based theoretical framework based on Sicart’s Ethics of Computer Games (2009). The gain of engaging with representation and simulation of the natural environment in mainstream computer game history will be demonstrated in an analysis of two paradigmatic games. -

Yacobucci Graduate Faculty Representative Donald Callen Lisa Alexander © 2011 Stefan Hall All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Ronald Shields, Advisor Although seen as an emergent area of study, the history of video games shows that the medium has had a longevity that speaks to its status as a major cultural force, not only within American society but also globally. Much of video game production has been influenced by cinema, and perhaps nowhere is this seen more directly than in the topic of games based on movies. Functioning as franchise expansion, spaces for play, and story development, film-to-game translations have been a significant component of video game titles since the early days of the medium. As the technological possibilities of hardware development continued in both the film and video game industries, issues of media convergence and divergence between film and video games have grown in importance. This dissertation looks at the ways that this connection was established and has changed by looking at the relationship between film and video games in terms of economics, aesthetics, and narrative. Beginning in the 1970s, or roughly at the time of the second generation of home gaming consoles, and continuing to the release of the most recent consoles in 2005, it traces major areas of intersection between films and video games by identifying key titles and companies to consider both how and why the prevalence of video games has happened and continues to grow in power. -

You can read the full article via the link. Though It partially explains the strategic rationale behind the deal, we still have some more numbers and details to present in our today’s digest. Let’s dive into the recently announced transactions in the gaming industry. EA Acquires Glu Mobile at $2.1B enterprise valuation U.S.based video game giant Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: EA) enters into an agreement to acquire U.S. based mobile game developer Glu Mobile (NASDAQ: GLUU) for $2.1B in enterprise value. The equity purchase price is paid in cash and accounts for $2.4B ($12.5 per share), including a ~$364m net cash on the balance. Transaction details > The price includes a 36% premium to Glu’s closing share price on the previous day (Feb 5, 2021); > The transaction is fully financed by EA’s cash on hand; > Based on Glu’s annual 2020 results, the transaction multiplies are 3.9x EV/Revenue, 71.2x EV/EBITDA, and 27.5x EV/adj. EBITDA; > The acquisition should be closed by the end of Q2’21. Strategic Rationale > Further expansion into the rapidly growing mobile space — increasing EA’s mobile bookings by 70% Based on 2020 results, Glu’s bookings accounted for $660m whereas EA reported $780m. Moreover, EA’s mobile sports games’ revenue fouryear CAGR of 24% is almost 2x times higher than sport PC/console games (13%). -
