Department The University of British Columbia Vancouver, Canada DE-6 (2/88) Abstract Increasing forest management resulting from bark beetle attack in British Columbia's forests has created a need to assess the impact of single species management on local insect biodiversity. In the Fort St James Forest District, in central British Columbia, Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii Franco) (Fd) grows at the northern limit of its North American range. At the district level the species is rare (representing 1% of timber stands), and in the early 1990's growing populations of the Douglas-fir beetle (Dendroctonus pseudotsuage Hopkins) threatened the loss of all mature Douglas-fir habitat in the district. -

Anaballetus gen. nov., Anaballetus chilensis sp. nov. (tribe Sogdini) and Neohydnobius irregularis sp. nov. (tribe Pseudoliodini), both from Chile, are described and distinguished from related and similar taxa. A key for the identi- fi cation of the described world genera of the tribe Sogdini is presented, and the placement of the new genus is discussed; it is considered most closely related to still-undescribed genera known from Australia and New Zealand. A key is also provided to all described species of Leiodinae known from Chile and Argentina. With the exception of Dietta Sharp, 1876, all of these genera and species of Leio- dinae are endemic (precinctive) to Chile and southern Argentina. Key words. Sogda (Trichohydnobius) ibericus n. sp participa de todas las características que caracterizan al género Sogda, pudiendo separarse con claridad de las cinco especies conocidas tomando como base los caracteres morfológicos que se detallan en la discusión. Alaska has a limited taxonomic workforce to address these changes. We are building a DNA barcode library to facilitate a metabarcoding approach to monitoring non-marine arthropods. Working with the Canadian Centre for DNA Barcoding, we obtained DNA barcodes from recently collected and authoritatively identified specimens in the University of Alaska Museum Insect Collection and the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge collection. -

Stockbridge, B.S Fairbanks, Alaska August 2014 Abstract Commercial logging is among the most important disturbance factors affecting forest biota. An indirect effect of commercial logging is minimal understory within young even-aged forests, which can decrease forest biodiversity. To improve management of young even-aged forest stands within the Tongass National Forest (TNF), foresters are testing alternative forestry practices under the Tongass-Wide Young-Growth Studies (TWYGS). However, little is known about how the new thinning treatments included in the TWYGS will affect forest biota and the recovery of young even-aged forest stands as they transition back into old growth forests. To investigate the effects of thinned secondary growth on forest biota in the TNF on Prince of Wales Island, Alaska, I compared spider and beetle biodiversity in thinned secondary growth to old growth forest stands, clearcuts, and un-thinned secondary growth. -
