Empire's Garden: Assam and the Making of India
A book in the series Radical Perspectives a radical history review book series Series editors: Daniel J. Walkowitz, New York University Barbara Weinstein, New York University History, as radical historians have long observed, cannot be severed from authorial subjectivity, indeed from politics. Political concerns animate the questions we ask, the subjects on which we write. For over thirty years the Radical History Review has led in nurturing and advancing politically engaged historical research. Radical Perspec- tives seeks to further the journal’s mission: any author wishing to be in the series makes a self-conscious decision to associate her or his work with a radical perspective. To be sure, many of us are currently struggling with the issue of what it means to be a radical historian in the early twenty-first century, and this series is intended to provide some signposts for what we would judge to be radical history. It will o√er innovative ways of telling stories from multiple perspectives; comparative, transnational, and global histories that transcend con- ventional boundaries of region and nation; works that elaborate on the implications of the postcolonial move to ‘‘provincialize Eu- rope’’; studies of the public in and of the past, including those that consider the commodification of the past; histories that explore the intersection of identities such as gender, race, class and sexuality with an eye to their political implications and complications. Above all, this book series seeks to create an important intellectual space and discursive community to explore the very issue of what con- stitutes radical history. Within this context, some of the books pub- lished in the series may privilege alternative and oppositional politi- cal cultures, but all will be concerned with the way power is con- stituted, contested, used, and abused. -

Intelligent, Item Based Stereotype Recommender System
Intelligent, Item-Based Stereotype Recommender System NOURAH ABDULMOHSEN AL-ROSSAIS Ph.D. Thesis Computer Science Feb 2021 To my beloved father, my role model and inspiration who has sadly passed away during my study ... You will always motivate me to achieve more in life ... Abstract Recommender systems (RS) have become key components driving the success of e-commerce, and other platforms where revenue and customer satisfaction is dependent on the user’s ability to discover desirable items in large catalogues. As the number of users and items on a platform grows, the computational complexity, the vastness of the data, and the sparsity problem constitute important challenges for any recommendation algorithm. In addition, the most widely studied filtering-based RS, while effective in providing suggestions for established users and items, are known for their poor performance for the new user and new item (cold start) problems. Stereotypical modelling of users and items is a promising approach to solving these problems. A stereotype represents an aggregation of the characteristics of the items or users which can be used to create general user or item classes. This work propose a set of methodologies for the automatic generation of stereotypes during the cold-starts. The novelty of the proposed approach rests on the findings that stereotypes built independently of the user-to-item ratings improve both recommendation metrics and computational performance during cold-start phases. The resulting RS can be used with any machine learning algorithm as a solver, and the improved performance gains due to rate-agnostic stereotypes are orthogonal to the gains obtained using more sophisticated solvers. -

Youth and Status in Tamil Nadu, India Abstract This sociocultural anthropological study looks at youth culture in Tamil Nadu, India, focusing on college- age youth in Madurai and Chennai. The dissertation first shows how outhy experience their position in the larger Tamil society as “being outside of.” This exteriority is manifest in youth concepts of status and gender, the signs and activities which express such status and gender, and the social spaces in which such signs and activities are played out. In particular, the dissertation focuses on how the youth peer group is dually shaped as an exterior space of youth status negotiation—as exterior to adult norms of authority (and thus a space of status-raising qua transgression) and as exterior to norms of hierarchical ranking (and thus an egalitarian space of status-leveling, intimacy, and reciprocity). It is this tension between status-raising and -lowering which the dissertation shows to be crucially at play in how youth engage with and deploy various status-ful signs. -

A STUDY of CONTEMPORARY INDIAN HORROR CINEMA Mithuraaj Dhusiya Abstract
Dhusiya 1 Journal Title: Wide Screen Vol. 5, No.1, February 2014 ISSN: 1757-3920 URL: http://widescreenjournal.org Published by Subaltern Media, 153 Sandringham Drive, Leeds LS17 8DQ, UK LET THE GHOST SPEAK: A STUDY OF CONTEMPORARY INDIAN HORROR CINEMA Mithuraaj Dhusiya Abstract: Mainstream Indian cinema, with an eye on the box-office, more often than not fixates on the staple romance-cum-action journey of the heroic male protagonist/s. Horror films, in contrast, generate a set of alternative explorations that move beyond this male heroic project, creating willy-nilly a space wherein negotiations with the normative can take place. The present article examines how recent non-Hindi horror films espouse the cause of subalterns both within specific communities and in the larger framework of the entire nation. Examining the Tamil film Kanchana: Muni 2 (Lawrence 2011), and the Telugu Punnami Nagu (Reddy 2009), this article looks at how these these films give space to protagonists who fall outside the prescribed hierarchy of the sanctioned procreative (hetero)sexual order – the transgendered person in Kanchana and the devadasi (temple courtesan) in Punnami Nagu. These films diegetically produce horror through their depiction of the horrors of everyday processes of gendering. However, the paradox generated by the mainstream nature of these films also means that their articulation of a critique of such en-gendering cannot be explosively and entirely subversive either – there is a sweetening parallel containment of subversion through convenient diegetic resolutions that do not depart that much from pre- existing stereotypes about these very protagonists. Topics touched upon include the transperson – subjectivities and discourses; transphobia; medicalization; the creation of the social; women´s empowerment; animal poaching; caste- and sexual oppression, and the use of technology in the horror film. -

They aren’t attracting nationwide audiences as yet, but that perhaps has more to do with the way films are marketed and distributed than their own formidable talents. it is a question of time before the demand for such films grows and in these early offerings is perhaps the first truly original indian cinema in a long while. it is a measure of how much attention these films are capable of attracting that Harishchandrachi Factory by Paresh Mokashi was an indian entry at the oscars.
