Walsh a Photo Andrea Walsh Curriculum Vitae Born 1974, Stockport, England 1995-1998 Staffordshire University, BA Hons Fine Art 1999-2000 International Glass Centre, West Midlands, Glass Techniques & Technology 2001-2001 Edinburgh College of Art, Edinburgh, MA Glass and architectural Glass Working in Edinburgh “I am intrigued by ideas of containment, materiality, preciousness and value, which I explore through the box and vessel form. My chosen palette of materials - ceramics, glass and metal - are connected by traditional casting and forming techniques, which I use to make unique objects that are considered, refined, and exquisitely tactile. Contemplating both the individual qualities and direct relationships of these ancient and alchemic materials, each piece reveals a subtle balance and purity of form, and communicates through an intimate scale where themes akin with jewellery prevail such as to hold and to cherish.” Andrea Walsh “Walsh’s work seems the antithesis of the fleeting surfaces of contemporary life and yet the forms are free of the pastiche or anachronism of the self consciously crafted thing. They possess instead what the American art historian Keith Moxey describes as a vital heterochronicity – a capacity to unfold many timeworlds simultaneously through the precision and poetry of the forms.” Amanda Game - Independent Curator, 2014 Andrea Walsh -2- Solo Exhibitions 2018 Andrea Walsh, The Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh 2009 Andrea Walsh, Beaux Arts, Bath 2006 Andrea Walsh, Open Eye • Scottish Art: Then and Now
Scottish Art: Then and Now by Clarisse Godard-Desmarest “Ages of Wonder: Scotland’s Art 1540 to Now”, an exhibition presented in Edinburgh by the Royal Scottish Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture tells the story of collecting Scottish art. Mixing historic and contemporary works, it reveals the role played by the Academy in championing the cause of visual arts in Scotland. Reviewed: Tom Normand, ed., Ages of Wonder: Scotland’s Art 1540 to Now Collected by the Royal Scottish Academy of Art and Architecture, Edinburgh, The Royal Scottish Academy, 2017, 248 p. The Royal Scottish Academy (RSA) and the National Galleries of Scotland (NGS) have collaborated to present a survey of collecting by the academy since its formation in 1826 as the Scottish Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. Ages of Wonder: Scotland’s Art 1540 to Now (4 November 2017-7 January 2018) is curated by RSA President Arthur Watson, RSA Collections Curator Sandy Wood and Honorary Academician Tom Normand. It has spawned a catalogue as well as a volume of fourteen essays, both bearing the same title as the exhibition. The essay collection, edited by Tom Normand, includes chapters on the history of the RSA collections, the buildings on the Mound, artistic discourse in the nineteenth century, teaching at the academy, and Normand’s “James Guthrie and the Invention of the Modern Academy” (pp. 117–34), on the early, complex history of the RSA. Contributors include Duncan Macmillan, John Lowrey, William Brotherston, John Morrison, Helen Smailes, James Holloway, Joanna Soden, Alexander Moffat, Iain Gale, Sandy Wood, and Arthur Watson.

  • Download Craft Scotland Celebrates... Wood PDF 6 Feb 2019
MEDIA RELEASE: Craft Scotland and VAS showcase material mastery in wood by Scotland based makers Three of Scotland's most exciting artists present their work in the third Craft Scotland celebrates... exhibition as part of ALIGHT at Royal Scottish Academy In the third of a planned series celebrating craft mediums Craft Scotland is delighted once again to be partnering with Visual Arts Scotland (VAS) to celebrate contemporary woodworking through a presentation of multidisciplinary works from gifted Scotland based makers. This year Craft Scotland has chosen to explore wood through the diverse work of three makers: Charlotte Barker, Beth Legg and Naomi Mcintosh. Their work is presented alongside hirta, a modular structure that acts as a focus for discussion around materiality, design and making. Challenging the common perceptions of wood, this year the Craft Scotland celebrates... wood showcase highlights the versatility of wood as a craft material, and the diversity of applications it can be adapted to. Selected by the VAS committee and representatives of Craft Scotland, the three invited artists will form the starting point for a wider celebration of the diverse discipline of contemporary woodworking throughout the ALIGHT exhibition. A sense of movement is offered by Charlotte Barker, the wood’s natural texture contrasting with the controlled markings of her ceramic vessels. Beth Legg’s objects and jewellery are rooted in the poetic nature of metal, wood and stone and her fascination with hinterlands while Naomi Mcintosh’s designs explore volume, pattern and movement. Speaking ahead of the exhibition opening Craft Scotland Director Irene Kernan said: “Our media-specific showcases were born out of Craft Scotland and Visual Arts Scotland's mutual ambition to exhibit high-quality craft, alongside works of fine art, in a venue fitting of its stature.

HELEN FLOCKHART Arusha Gallery | [email protected] | 0131 557 1412 BIOGRAPHY Following her attainment of a first-class undergraduate degree in painting at the Glasgow School of Art in 1984, Helen Flockhart took up postgraduate study with the British Council at the State Higher School of Fine Art in Poznan, Poland. Boasting an impressive resume of solo exhibitions, spanning both Scotland and England, as well as group shows in New York, Ontario, Rotterdam, London and Truro, Flockhart was recently awarded the Concept Fine Art Award (2016), the Royal Scottish Academy’s Maude Gemmel Hutchinson Prize (2012), and the Lyon and Turnbull Award presented by the Royal Glasgow Institute (2012). A fellow of the Glasgow Art Club (as of 1997), Flockhart’s works belong to such prestigious collections as the Fleming Collection, the Scottish Arts Council, Strathclyde University and the Lillie. Bill Hare, teaching fellow of Modern and Contemporary Scottish Art at the University of Edinburgh, praises her work. ‘Nobody paints like Helen Flockhart’, he writes: ‘here the mundane and the mythical are at one with each other’. Hers are works which break with established convention -- a blend of portrait and landscape, Flockhart’s paintings are verdant, fantastical paeans to that particularist genre of British myth making centered on pastures, mountains and divinity. Indeed, there is something Blakean about her work -- a warmth of vision borne of what appears simultaneous ancient and modern. EDUCATION 1985-1986 Studied painting at the State Higher School of
