The February General Meeting of the WCRA will be held at Rainbow Creek Station in Confederation Park in Burnaby following the AGM. ON THE COVER Drake Street Roundhouse, Vancouver—taken November 1981 by Micah Gampe, and donated to the 374 Pavilion by Roundhouse Dental. Visible from left to right are British Columbia power car Prince George, Steam locomotive #1077 Herb Hawkins, Royal Hudson #2860’s tender, and CP Rail S-2 #7042 coming onto the turntable. In 1981, the roundhouse will soon be vacated by the railway, and the Provincial collection will move to BC Rail at North Vancouver. The Roundhouse will become a feature pavilion at Expo 86, and then be developed into today’s Roundhouse Community Centre and 374 Pavilion. Unauthorized duplication or distribution is strictly prohibited. Introduction The Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) has always been a symbol of Canada's nation-building experience. Poets, musicians, politicians, historians, and writers have lauded the railway as one of the country's greatest achievements. Indeed, the transcontinental railway was a remarkable accomplishment: its managers, engineers, and workers overcame incredible obstacles to throw the iron track across seemingly impenetrable bogs and forests, expansive prairies, and nearly impassable mountains. The cost in money, human energy, and lives was enormous. Completed in 1885, the CPR was one of the most important instruments by which fledgling Canada realized a vision implicit in the Confederation agreement of 1867-the building of a nation from sea to sea. In the fulfilment of this dream, the CPR, and subsequently the Canadian Northern and Grand Trunk systems, allowed the easy interchange of people, ideas, and goods across a vast continent; they permitted the settlement of the Western interior and the Pacific coast; and they facilitated the integration of Atlantic Canada with the nation's heartland. In sum, by expediting commercial, political, and cultural intercourse among Canada's diverse regions, the transcontinentals in general, and the CPR in particular, strengthened the nation. Historiography The first scholarly historical analysis of the Canadian Pacific Railway was Harold Innis's A History of the Canadian Pacific Railway. In his daunting account of contracts, passenger traffic, freight rates, and profits, he drew some sweeping conclusions. -

This Edition of the WCR Press opens 2021 with the hope that wide distribution of the COVID- 19 vaccine will allow us to resume passenger service by the end of this summer or early fall. We have developed an opening plan and new schedule so that when circumstances permit, service may commence immediately. The St. Jacobs Restoration and Maintenance Facility has remained open on a limited basis for some restoration projects and on-going equipment safety related maintenance in anticipation of when we start operations again. Although wide ranging in topics and photos, this Edition has a winter element to it. Recently two beautiful February days afforded us the opportunity for future winter promotional photos and videos. This was led by our Assistant General Manager Greg McDonnell along with videographers graciously supplied by Waterloo Region Tourism and Marketing Corporation capturing these winter images. “We took our time working south, stopping wherever photographic opportunities presented themselves. And if we started the day with the quintessential Woolwich Township lunch, we ended it with the consummate image of winter in Canada. The Conestogo River bridge in St. Jacobs spans not just the river but the millrace to the old flour mill downtown. When we were switching to build the train yesterday, I noticed as we pulled onto the bridge for head room that the mill race was frozen over and shoveled clean for skating as far as you could see. What if, I wondered. -

Oasis Rail Transit Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) Fact Sheet February 2016 Approximately 17 miles in length, the proposed Oasis Rail Transit corridor extends between downtown Cincinnati and the City of Milford and would initially be served by seven stations. In addition to providing a new rail-based regional transportation option serving Eastern Corridor communities, the Oasis line would also offer new opportunities for community enhancement and development. PREFERRED RAIL VEHICLE TYPE: DMU One of the most prominent features considered for the Oasis line is the actual rail vehicle (or train) that would transport passengers to their destinations. Early studies completed for the Eastern Corridor Program recommended that self-propelled passenger coaches be considered as the preferred rail vehicle type. Further studies explored in more detail the technologies available for the line including: • Diesel-powered locomotives pulling single or bi-level passenger coaches • Electrically-powered streetcar-type vehicles • Electrically-powered light rail vehicles call Electric Multiple Units (EMU/LRT) • Diesel-powered passenger cars (Diesel Multiple Units or DMUs) The results of those studies confirmed that diesel-powered passenger cars, or DMUs, would be the most appropriate technology for the Oasis Rail Transit line. Features of DMUs that made it stand out beyond other rail vehicle choices included: • DMUs are flexible in terms of operational capabilities and can efficiently serve the 17-mile Oasis corridor – which is too short for traditional “push-pull” locomotives and coach cars but More information about rail generally too long for streetcar-type vehicles – and efficiently vehicles is available in the Oasis manage the spacing between stations. -

NEVADA STATE RAILROAD MUSEUM Carson City, Nevada 1926 EDWARDS MOTORCAR MOTORMAN / CONDUCTOR HANDBOOK 2010 Motorman / Conductor Description: The Motorman/Conductor is a volunteer who is responsible for the safe operation of the train to which he is assigned. He is responsible for the safety of the passengers aboard his train and in addition, shall demonstrate concern for their comfort and enjoyment. He shall be responsible for seeing that trains operate on schedule and that adequate and responsible personnel are on hand to carry out such operations. He will familiarize himself with the safe operation of trains, the history and background of the equipment in use, and the museum grounds and facilities in order to be able to answer the public‘s questions. The Motorman/Conductor will be familiar with proper equipment operation. He is expected to sell tickets when no Ticket Agent is available. He will perform maintenance on the Motorcar as needed. Conductor‟s duties include: 1. Following the instructions in Motorman/Conductor Handbook. 2. Working in a safe manner. 3. Inspecting both the interior and exterior of the Motorcar at the start of the day to check for anything that may cause an unsafe condition. 4. Directing the Motorman in moving the Motorcar onto and away from the turntable. 5. Performing brake-tests. 6. Operating switches as needed. 7. Instructing Trainees. 8. Assisting in the boarding and detraining of passengers. 9. Communicating to the Motorman where to make a Station Stop. 10. Communicating to the Motorman when the train is ready to depart after any stop. 11. Reporting any defects to the Shop Crew and/or the Motorcar Crew Chief. -
