We support scientists working on Turkic Studies, Ot‐ toman or Turkey related Studies with literature in all relevant languages. Our full text repository MENAdoc (http://menadoc.biblio‐ thek.uni-halle.de) currently contains some 15,000 freely acces‐ sible documents with a focus on the Middle East and Islamic studies. Apart from digitized volumes from our classical hold‐ ings and contracts with publishers, the SIS also offers a service for scholars to re-publish their works. Contributions from an‐ thologies or periodicals can be promoted for a second time on the green road of open access. The SIS offers to examine researchers’ works for possible sec‐ ondary publications on MENAdoc. It also organizes the digitiza‐ tion, publication and cataloguing of contributions. In this way, Turkology has the opportunity to use an established specialized platform with a Middle Eastern focus, which does not serve any commercial purpose and keeps access to knowledge open. Full text recognition, high-quality metadata and indexing in popular catalogues complete our service and make contribu‐ tions (re-)published on MENAdoc internationally visible.

Dr. Bilal Dindar tarafından Türkçeye çevrilmiştir. The approach to the theme of love was metaphorical and mystical in classical Ottoman poetry. During the period of modernisation (1839-1923), poets either rejected the theme of love altogether or abandoned Islamic aesthetics and adopted a Parnassian approach arguing that love was the expression of desire for physical beauty. A great variety of discourses on love developed during the republican period. Yahya Kemal sets the theme of love in Ottoman Istanbul and mourns the end of the relationship with the beloved who incarnates his conservative vision of national identity.

• TURKIC LITERATURE – Early Modern Period
HUMANITIES INSTITUTE Prof. Talat S Halman TURKIC LITERATURE – Early Modern Period OTTOMAN LITERATURE Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman state had a life span of more than six centuries, from (1299 to 1922). A single dynasty reigned in unbroken continuity. Islam was not only the religious faith, but also the political ideology of the basically theocratic Ottoman state. The empire was multiracial, multinational, multireligious, multilingual. In ruling over these disparate elements, the Ottoman establishment achieved remarkable success in administrative, military, and fiscal organization. Overview. Ottoman literature, which stressed poetry as the superior art, utilized the form and the aeshetic values of Islamic Arabo-Persian literature. The educated elite, led by the sultans (many of whom were accomplished poets themselves), produced a huge body of verse whose hallmarks included refined diction, abstruse vocabulary, euphony, romantic agony, and dedication to formalism and tradition, and the Sufi brand of mysticism. Although prose was not held in high esteem by the Ottoman literary establishment, accounts for some excellent achievements, particularly the travelogues of the seventeenth-century cultural commentator Evliya Çelebi. The Ottoman Empire also nurtured a rich theatrical tradition, which consisted of Karagöz (shadow plays), Meddah (storyteller and impersonator), and Orta oyunu(a type of commedia dell’arte). Traditions. Three main literary traditions evolved: 1) Tekke (sect, denomination) literature; 2) Oral folk literature; 3) Divan (elite) literature. Oral folk literature and Divan literature hardly ever influenced each other; in fact, they remained oblivious of one another. Tekke literature, however, had an easy intercoursewith both, utilizing their forms, prosody, vocabulary, and stylistic devices in a pragmatic fashion.
