Nietzsche Much attention has been paid to the history and theory of European and American cinema as it has evolved over the last century, but there is comparatively little scholarship of films from the Middle East, an area that has been long misunderstood by the Western world. However, in recent years, the blossoming film industry of Iran and its many awards have begun to awaken the world to a brilliant new film tradition. Since the 1979 Iranian Revolution, a new generation of filmmakers has emerged, and through a variety of subjects, they provide an authentic perspective of modern Iranian culture. The post- Revolutionary film tradition of Iran has gained respect and admiration globally for its subtle exploration of social issues while avoiding superficiality. International film festivals have awarded Iranian films in recent years for their simple, yet profound messages. In the 20th and 21st century, this relatively new medium of film has become the most accessible art form to populations around the world, and it has become the most vivid way to experience another country’s culture. The history of film in Iran since the Revolution is that of an evolving relationship—both the filmmaker’s and the Revolutionary generation’s relationship to the government. Understanding the relationship between film and politics is the first step in understanding the films themselves. -

Comparative Literary Studies Program Course Descriptions 2013-2014 Fall 2013 CLS 206: Literature and Media: LaByrinths Lectures: TTh 11:00-12:20, Fisk B17 Instructor: Domietta Torlasco Expected Enrollment: Course Description: This course will trace a brief history of labyrinths through literature, architecture, cinema, and new media. From classical mythology to cutting-edge computer games, the figure of the labyrinth has shaped the way in which we ask crucial questions about space, time, perception, and technology. Whether an actual maze or a book or a film, the labyrinth presents us with an entanglement of lines and pathways that is as demanding as it is engrossing and even exhilarating. As we move from medium to medium, or pause in between media, the labyrinth will in turn emerge as an archetypal image, a concrete pattern, a narrative structure, a figure of thought, a mode of experience....Among the works which we will analyze are Jorge Luis Borges' celebrated short stories, Italo Calvino's experiments in detective fiction, Mark Z. Danielewski' hyper- textual novelHouse of Leaves, films such as Orson Welles' Citizen Kane (1941), Stanley Kubrick's The Shining (1980), and Christopher Nolan's Inception (2010), and the more intellectually adventurous video games. The choral music of Abbie Betinis is being widely performed and commissioned by prominent high school, university, and civic choruses. This study examines From Behind the Caravan: Songs of Hâfez, a five-movement work by Betinis for women’s chorus, vielle, oud, and Persian percussion. Four ghazals by Hâfez of Shiraz, a fourteenth century Sufi poet, are used as the text for Betinis’s Caravan. When considering a performance of this work, a conductor must understand proper treatment of the text, available translation options, Hâfez’s vast world of imagery, vocal demands inherent to the work, alternate instrumentations available and the benefits of each, how to approach improvisatory passages, how to engage heterophonic elements, and how to prepare a Western choir and audience with very little to no understanding of the philosophies of Sufism that heavily influence the work. -

Overview: For many audiences, understanding of the PalestinianIsraeli conflict comes mainly from the media news of violence and of political friction dominate the airwaves, and we sometimes forget about the ordinary Palestinian and Israeli citizens involved. To get at the human element of the PalestinianIsraeli conflict, students will read, discuss, and reflect on stories from and/or about Palestine and Israel. Units are designed by theme/topic, and each unit contains readings from both Palestinian and Israeli perspectives on each theme/topic.This curriculum was designed for a grade 12 course. Timing: Suggested class periods: 21+. This curriculum may, of course, be shortened or lengthened depending on schedule, students, etc. This curriculum may also be developed into a semester long course. How to Read this Document: This Palestinian & Israeli Literature Unit has been divided into 9 miniunits. Under each miniunit, you will find suggested class times, background information or context, suggested readings, and suggested class lessons/activities. At the end of the document, you will find sample writing assignments and further information about the suggested readings. Most readings are available online, and links have been provided.
