What they found was a 1,750­square­foot one­bedroom apartment on the Île Saint­Louis, right in the center of the city. The building in which it is situated has cultural as well as historic resonance: Constructed in the mid­17th century, it was home to famed Barbizon School painter Charles­François Daubigny in the mid 180os. The apartment appealed to Van der Straeten particularly because of its exquisite proportions and soaring, 14­foot­high ceilings, plus its location directly on the banks of the Seine.

    Hannah Benson Benson 1 Finding “The Other Paris” through Creative Cartography Over seven weeks in July and August, I traversed the streets of Paris, distributing over 500 blank maps of the city to booksellers, tourists, businessmen and artists, among others. The goal of this pursuit was to investigate Parisian life according to Parisians. In the American eye, Paris is often seen as the City of Love and Light, and is reduced to monuments like the Eiffel Tower or the Arc de Triomphe. Indeed, when I first visited Paris, I was surprised and slightly disappointed at the reality of the city, which like all other cities, has flaws that are inconsistent with the idealized depiction of tourist destinations. This project sought to discover such inconsistencies, which render Paris a far richer and more nuanced metropolis than even the Louvre and Notre Dame could suggest. Essentially, I embarked on a search for “The Other Paris” by using creative cartography as a means of investigation. I chose to use maps as a way to examine the reality of life in Paris because I believe that they can be a very powerful mode of both personal and cultural expression. Places are not mapped if they are not important or remembered, be they famous museums or nondescript boulangeries where someone goes every morning to get bread for their family. When people fill out a personal map, they are marking the places that are significant in their life, whether or not they intend to. By giving Parisians the opportunity to tell their story on a map, I hoped to unveil such places, which in turn would reveal the true character of Paris according to those who actually live there.

    The Traveling Professor Presents PARIS and GIVERNY, THE HOME OF MONET TENTATIVE ITINERARY Day 1, Sunday Arrive in Paris, check in, rest. Since it has been a long travel day, we start activities at about 5 p.m. (starting time may be adjusted when all traveler arrival info has been received) with a brief orientation. Then, with the Eiffel Tower sparkling in the background, sail past the Louvre, Notre Dame, and Orsay down the center of Paris. It’s the perfect way to start a week in Paris. Day 2, Monday Meet our guide in the lobby at 9:15 a.m. We do a walking tour through the neighborhood, go over to Île de la Cité to see Notre Dame, amazing St. Chapelle, and the historic Conciergerie. After lunch, it’s the Tuileries Gardens and the water lilies at the Orangerie museum. Day 3, Tuesday A stroll through Luxembourg Gardens. Head over to Napoleon’s Tomb. Then it’s lunch and a tour of the Rodin Museum. Finish the day at the Arc de Triomphe and a walk down Champs Elysees. Day 4, Wednesday Morning pickup at our hotel for the drive out to Giverny, the home of Monet. We arrive early to beat the crowds and get some great shots of the famous Japanese Bridge in the gardens. There is plenty of time to tour the house and for lunch. Return to Paris for some free time. That night, with most of the tourists gone, we take in the Louvre to visit Mona and her friends. A full day of enjoyment! Day 5, Thursday It is over to the wonderful Musée Orsay where our guide tells the stories behind the paintings.

The Pont Saint-Louis marks the boundary – often with music – beyond which lies the tranquility of sumptuous mansion houses and a refuge for artists and poets: the Île Saint-Louis. This Ile is also a haven for gourmets if you judge by the profusion of restaurants, cafés, ice-cream makers and confectioners, whose tempting windows line the rue Saint-Louis-en-l’Île.
