    The status, frequency and abundance of passerine passage migrants and seasonal visitors in Cyprus 2003–2013 COLIN RICHARDSON A great deal of work has been published on bird migration in Cyprus, especially since the formation of the Cyprus Ornithological Society in 1957. Subsequently as the society grew stronger, migration was well studied by WRP Bourne and others (Bourne 1959, 1960, Stagg 1967, Flint 1972), and is covered in a dedicated section on bird migration by Peter Flint and Peter Stewart in the second edition of their standard work of reference The Birds of Cyprus (Flint & Stewart 1992). This reference is still fairly accurate today for many species, although there have been changes in both the status and distribution of some species. The purpose of this paper is to present an up-to-date picture of current passerine migration and movements, based on an analysis of the results of my own regular observations, primarily in western Cyprus, without the visiting observer bias present in the annual Cyprus Bird Report. However a fuller picture of migration including earlier and later migrant timings and larger flock counts will undoubtedly be available in these reports. METHODS My birdwatching in Cyprus commenced in 1998 and after taking up full-time residence in Paphos in late 2003, my outings became almost daily over the ten years from late 2003 until late 2013, with every bird observation logged and the numbers of each species counted. Generally surveys covered a 2–4 hour period 7.00–12.00 h, with at least a one full day weekly outing.

In Turkey, planning and management of the marine traffic using the waterways and ports in Turkey started with Turkish Straits VTS which came into service in 2003 due to the increase in traffic density enhance its effectiveness and necessity every year. Feasibility studies in five new areas have been initiated for the establishment of the VTS system by force of the strategic decision taken by the maritime authority in 2008. These areas are; İzmit Bay, Izmir Bay and Aliağa Region, Gulf of İskenderun and Mersin. Monitoring the marine traffic has an important place as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is an important transition point in the Eastern Mediterranean region. For this reason, in this study the impact assessment and necessity of the establishment of a VTS to be located in the TRNC were evaluated by using Environmental (PEST: Political, Economic, Social, Technological) and SWOT (Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities, Threats) Analyses.     REFORM OF DISCRIMINATORY SEXUAL OFFENCES LAWS IN THE COMMONWEALTH AND OTHER JURISDICTIONS Case Study of Northern Cyprus THE HUMAN DIGNITY TRUST The Human Dignity Trust is an organisation of international lawyers supporting local partners to uphold international and constitutional human rights law in countries where private, consensual sexual conduct between adults of the same-sex is criminalised. Over 70 jurisdictions globally criminalise consensual same-sex intimacy, putting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (‘LGBT’) people beyond the protection of the law and fostering a climate of fear, stigma, discrimination and violence. The Human Dignity Trust provides technical legal assistance upon request to local human rights defenders, lawyers and governments seeking to eradicate these discriminatory laws. With generous funding from Global Affairs Canada, the Human Dignity Trust has developed a series of case studies on the ways in which Commonwealth governments around the world have achieved reform of these laws and other sexual offences laws that discriminate against women, children, LGBT people and other groups, and initiated the establishment of a Commonwealth Group of Experts on legislative reform comprised of legal, political, academic and other experts with experience in reform of discriminatory sexual offences laws. The research for this series of case studies has been possible thanks to the insight and assistance of members of the Commonwealth Group of Experts and many others in the relevant countries who helped initiate, steer, inform and implement sexual offences law reform to bring sexual offences laws into compliance with international and domestic human rights standards. They overlie Pliocene marls, and some of them contain the Senegalese marine gastropods Persististrom- bus latus, Bursa granularis and Conus ermineus that no longer live in the Mediterranean. These are index fossils for the Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5e in the Mediterranean and, as such, suggest an uplift of up to 15.5 m over about the last 125 ka: that is a maximal rate of 0.12 mm a21.

Alarmed neighbours called the police, but not before the forewarned women had called the private television channels on their mobile phones. When confronted by the police and the army, the women said that they wanted their husbands. They said that they did not know whether their husbands were dead or alive since the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus and its subsequent occupation, and they wanted to know whether their husbands were dead (as they had been told by some witnesses), or whether they were still missing, as claimed by the gov- ernment. The authorities told them that they had committed an offence, took them into police custody, where they were then questioned, but released. The incident made national headlines. Some said that the women were crazy, and craving publicity; others that their pain had driven them to such extremes. After 24 years their husbands were clearly unidentifiable. They were frightened, proud, and defiant about what they did. What had driven them to such extreme measures? Juli 20191 Observations of dragonflies (Odonata) from northern Cyprus Peter Flint 14 Beechwood Avenue, Deal, Kent, CT14 9TD, UK, [email protected] Abstract During observations by two resident observers in northern Cyprus from June 2003 to Sep- tember 2004 21 species of dragonfly were recorded. These included nine species not pre- viously recorded from the north of the island, two of which, Erythromma viridulum and Trithemis arteriosa, were not previously mentioned in the island’s literature; the former being a new species for the island. These observations were the first long-term observa- tions on the island and were made during a period of rapid climate and habitat change; the results for Diplacodes lefebvrii, Anax parthenope, Orthetrum chrysostigma, O. sabina, Selysiothemis nigra, T. annulata, and T. arteriosa appear to reflect these environmental changes. Other significant records include: Lestes macrostigma (early records and migra- tion/dispersal), Sympecma fusca (early records), Erythromma lindenii (recorded in only one previous year), A. ephippiger (mass migration) and Sympetrum striolatum (winter mating and ovipositing). Thirty two of the wetlands/water bodies we monitored were not mentioned in the earlier literature. The composition of the island’s dragonfly fauna is dis- cussed in relation to island biogeography, climate, and habitat diversity. It is suggested that the low species richness and the narrow species range are due to island biogeographical factors, particularly (in the case of the latter) to the island’s poor habitat diversity; and that the surprising absence of endemics may be due to the island’s aridity and recurrent drought year clusters.

    Map 72 Cyprus Compiled by D. Rupp, 1994 Introduction Many factors, both ancient and not so ancient, have contributed to the cultural map that can be constructed of Cyprus between 1100 B.C. and A.D. 640. Before the beginning of the third century B.C. the island remained on the periphery of the Greek world. Only then did hellenization begin to permeate its entire society, not just the elite in the urban centers of some of the Iron Age kingdoms. Political and economic ties with the Levant, as well as cultural influences, had contributed significantly to shaping the Cypriote landscape in the Iron Age. Until hellenization irrevocably transformed Cypriote society and its use of the landscape in the Hellenistic period, the historical geography of the island must be understood in its own indigenous terms. Aside from the principal urban centers of the Iron Age kingdoms, Greek and Roman sources do not provide a wealth of detailed information on the geography of Cyprus. Extant epigraphical sources are likewise relatively mute on this topic. It is thus archaeology that must be employed as the primary source for historical geography. In the later nineteenth century, the plundering of chamber tombs and of rural sanctuaries under the guise of research was the norm in Cypriote archaeology. Although subsequently this regrettable approach was abandoned and the scientific excavation of kingdom centers commenced, fascination with the material culture revealed by tombs and by sanctuaries continued unabated. As a result, while there now exists a wealth of evidence for their location, overall distribution patterns and periods of occupation, by contrast the location, size and nature of settlements is much less well understood.
