The beach/shallow-marine deposits were observed on the abraded coastal cliffs at 3–22 m above the present sea-level. They overlie Pliocene marls, and some of them contain the Senegalese marine gastropods Persististrom- bus latus, Bursa granularis and Conus ermineus that no longer live in the Mediterranean. These are index fossils for the Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5e in the Mediterranean and, as such, suggest an uplift of up to 15.5 m over about the last 125 ka: that is a maximal rate of 0.12 mm a21. These find- ings are in accordance with Holocene beachrocks, abrasion platforms, wave notches and Roman/ Byzantine fish tanks that retained their elevations, and thus enable the reconstruction of the coast encountered by the early colonizers. While the maximal uplift since the early Holocene has been minor and did not exceed 1.2–1.5 m, the sea-level changes have reached 40–50 m. The transition between the impermeable Pliocene marls and the porous Late Pleistocene deposits above them is the origin of freshwater springs and associated vegetation. The early colonizers seemed to recog- nize the potential of that essential permanent source of water and excavated wells, the earliest wells known so far. The locations of the Early Neolithic settlements (Mylouthkia and Akanthou) adjacent to visible water springs along the coastal cliffs may not be incidental. Not surprisingly, recent wells dug in the coastal Pleistocene deposits rely on the very same hydrological setting. Season markedly affected species composition, since 42 taxa were exclusively recorded in spring and 35 in autumn, contrary to 56 shared taxa. It is very similar in shell characters to both the species reported for the Mediterranean sea, the fossil Petaloconchus intortus (Lamarck, 1818) and the recent Petaloconchus (Macrophragma ) glomeratus (Linnaeus, 1758), but the peculiar structure of the internal keels and the proto - conch distinguish the new species from all the congeners; the external morphology of the soft parts add a new item in the discrimination of the recent species. For this purpose, the material collected from the area between the years 2005 and 2009, within the framework of different projects, was investigated. The investigation of the material taken from various biotopes ranging at depths between 0 and 100 m resulted in identification of 286 mollusc species and 27542 specimens belonging to them. Among the encountered species, Vitreolina cf. perminima (Jeffreys, 1883) is new record for the Turkish molluscan fauna and 18 species are being new records for the Turkish Levantine coast. A checklist of Iskenderun mollusc fauna is given based on the present study and the studies carried out beforehand, and a total of 424 moluscan species are known to be distributed in Iskenderun Bay. With its spectacular scenery and enviable climate, it’s no wonder that Aphrodite chose the island as her playground, and since then, mere mortals have been discovering this ‘land fit for Gods’ for themselves. Cyprus is an island of beauty and a country of contrasts. Cool, pine-clad mountains are a complete scene-change after golden sun- kissed beaches; tranquil, timeless villages are in striking contrast to modern cosmopolitan towns; luxurious beachside hotels can be exchanged for large areas of natural, unspoilt countryside; yet in Cyprus all distances are easily manageable, mostly on modern roads and highways - with a secondary route or two for the more adventurous. Lecce-Monteroni 73100 Lecce RESEARCH ARTICLE ITALY Abstract 1 - Lagoons are ecotones between freshwater, marine and terrestrial biotopes, characterized by internal ecosystem heterogeneity, due to patchy spatial and temporal distribution of biotic and abiotic components, and inter-ecosystem heterogeneity, due to the various terrestrial-freshwater and freshwater-marine interfaces. 2 - Here, we carried out an analysis of environmental heterogeneity and benthic macro-invertebrate guilds in a sample of 26 Italian lagoons based on literature produced over a 25 year period.. 3 - In all, 944 taxonomic units, belonging to 13 phyla, 106 orders and 343 families, were recorded. Most species had a very restricted geographic distribution range. 75% of the macroinvertebrate taxa were observed in less than three of the twenty-six lagoons considered. 4 - Similarity among macroinvertebrate guilds in lagoon ecosystems was remarkably low, ranging from 10.5%±7.5% to 34.2%±14.4% depending on the level of taxonomic resolution. 5 - Taxonomic heterogeneity was due to both differences in species richness and to differences in species composition: width of seaward outlet, lagoon surface area and water salinity were the most important factors affecting species richness, together accounting for up to 75% of observed inter-lagoon heterogeneity, while distance between lagoons was the most significant factor affecting similarity of species composition.
