  • Considering the Worthy Sacrifice Hip Hop Artists May Need to Make to Reclaim the Heart of Hip Hop, Its People
It’s Not Me, It’s You: Considering the Worthy Sacrifice Hip Hop Artists May Need to Make to Reclaim the Heart of Hip Hop, its People by Sharieka Shontae Botex April, 2019 Director of Thesis: Dr. Wendy Sharer Major Department: English The origins of Hip Hop evidence that the art form was intended to provide more than music to listen to, but instead offer art that delivers messages on behalf of people who were not always listened to. My thesis offers an analysis of Jay-Z and J. Cole’s lyrical content and adds to an ongoing discussion of the potential Hip Hop artists have to be effective leaders for the Black community, whose lyrical content can be used to make positive change in society, and how this ability at times can be compromised by creating content that doesn’t evidence this potential or undermines it. Along with this, my work highlights how some of Jay-Z and J. Cole’s lyrical content exhibits their use of some rhetorical strategies and techniques used in social movements and their use of some African American rhetorical practices and strategies. In addition to this, I acknowledge and discuss points in scholarship that connect with my discussion of their lyrical content, or that aided me in proposing what they could consider for future lyrical content. I analyzed six Jay-Z songs and six J. Cole songs, including one song from their earliest released studio album and one from their most recently released studio album. I examined their lyrical content to document responses to the following questions: What issues and topics are discussed in the lyrics; Is money referenced? If so, how; Is there a message of uplift or unity?; What does the artist speak out against?; What lifestyles and habits are promoted?; What guidance is provided?; What problems are mentioned? and What solutions are offered? In my thesis, I explored Jay-Z and J.

6 LIFE&ARTS Wednesday, September 11, 2019 @TheEtCetera The Et Cetera far beyond the hype Rap’s best artists of today Who comes to mind when discussing the top hip-hop art- ists ever? Of course the usual suspects like Tupac and Biggie will be in this discussion. But other all-time greats like Rakim, DMX and OutKast could also be mentioned. I think everyone’s preferences would look a little different. Recently, a hip-hop podcast called “The Brew” tweeted out a list of the “Top 50 Greatest Rappers of All-Time”. The list that resulted in a Twitter uproar of angry fans and members of the music industry. The commenters had several big complaints. For one, no female artists were listed. One-hit wonder and now outspoken hip-hop critic Joe Budden was listed at No. 3. And a number of highly regarded top artists were either ranked horribly or absent from the list altogether. I agree that this list included a truly ridiculous sequence of artists. Upon seeing the list for the first time, I honestly thought it was a joke or a troll. 4. Straight Outta Washington This page exists so the first few questions aren’t spoiled upon opening. Moderator Instructions: Each answerline consists of a mashup between a rapper and a politician (eg: Danny Brown + Sam Brownback = Danny Brownback). The correct answer must be a mashup name. Be generous and prompt the player if they can name both the rapper and politician but can’t think of the mashup name. I attempted to think of all possible mashup names for the answerline, but accept a mashup name that is not listed if you think it is reasonable. I included the actual rapper and politician in the answerline. 1. The cover of this person’s album Lost Change promises “Prosperity at home, prestige abroad”. This person opposed the replacement of his namesake tariff with the Wilson-Gorman tariff by protesting “We rockin' it, contagious/Monkey business, outrageous”, and he also complained “I think the whole world's addicted to the drama” after he was put on blast in the De Lome Letter. Beatriz Helgotsson BA thesis Supervisor: Joe Trotta Examiner: Misuzu Shimotori Title: The Aspects of “Be” in selected rap and Hip Hop lyrics: A marker of cultural identity? Author: Beatriz Helgotsson Supervisor: Joe Trotta Abstract: The aim of this study is to investigate the use of the African American English (AAVE) verb be in lyrics written and performed by four African American rappers, Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, Gucci Mane and Future. This paper also demonstrates how the verb be in AAVE is used by these rappers to construct cultural identity. The method used is a qualitative analysis and partly a quantitative study of the empirical data. Every instance of the verb be was written down and counted in order to examine the lyrics and to explore how often and in what context it occurs in the selected material. The result of the study shows that the copula absence has the highest rate in frequency and occurrence within the selected rap lyrics, after which comes the invariant/habitual be followed by the so-called equative copula. Streaming continued to show significant growth in 2014, with over 164 billion songs streamed on- demand through audio and video platforms. Physical album sales declined, with weakness in CDs despite record-setting strength in Vinyl LPs. Digital Albums and Digital Tracks also showed declines versus 2013, although digital consumption overall (sales and streams) showed growth. Total consumption for the year, based on Albums plus Track Equivalent Albums and Streaming Equivalent Albums, was down slightly versus 2013. "Music fans continue to consume music through on-demand streaming services at record levels, helping to offset some of the weakness that we see in sales,” says David Bakula, SVP Industry Insights, Nielsen. “The continued expansion of digital music consumption is encouraging, as is the continued record setting growth that we are seeing in vinyl LP sales.” Nielsen provides music research and monitoring services for the entertainment industry. Nielsen’s airplay, sales and streaming data represents music consumers of all ethnicities and languages, and is featured weekly in Billboard’s charts, including the iconic Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard 200, and is widely cited as the standard for music measurement. CTSJ CRITICAL THEORY AND SOCIAL JUSTICE JOURNAL OF UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH OCCIDENTAL COLLEGE SPRING‘18 VOL. 7 CRITICAL THEORY AND SOCIAL JUSTICE CRITICAL THEORY AND SOCIAL JUSTICE JOURNAL OF UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH VOL. 7 JOURNAL OF UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH OCCIDENTAL COLLEGE CTSJ | OCCIDENTAL COLLEGE The Politics of Madvillainy: Queer Interventions in Hip-Hop BENNETT BRAZELTON | Tufts University ABSTRACT: Clay Cane writes of hip-hop in The Advocate, “one cannot forget its homophobia, a contagious infection in an art form that once stood for positivity.” This reactionary sentiment to hip-hop masculinity implies a sort of cognitive dissonance toward its intersection with queer theory. In line with the thinking of Moya Bailey and Mark Anthony Neal, I contend that hip-hop should be viewed––rather than dismissed––in terms of opportunities to disrupt oppressive structures within the genre. Little scholarship has used this framework to address disruptive performances outside of queer bodies. This paper attempts to fill this gap by analyzing the enigmatic, comical, at times oppressive, works of rapper MF DOOM. I specifically analyze DOOM’s creation and embrace of villainous identities, his subversions of capitalist mentalities in music, and his complex, transgressive sexualities, juxtaposed with the violent homophobia found in his later work. Ultimately, the purpose of this essay is to qualify archetypes of queer disruption in hip-hop, using DOOM as a case study of both transgression and oppression. “The Illest Villains” Villains who possess supernatural abilities––villains who were the personification of carnage. Madvillain, more accurately, the dark side of our beings. – an excerpt from the album intro, “Illest Villains” on 2004’s Madvillainy José Esteban Muñoz writes in the opening words of Cruising Utopia, “Queerness is not yet here” but is in fact an imagination of futuristic potentiality.
