Vella MD., MP, Minister for Foreign Affairs and the Chairman of the committee Mr. Nicholas Bonello. Consul for Malta Mr. Frank Scicluna to send a message which will be read during the inauguration ceremony. Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra Temples in Malta The megalithic temples of Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra located on the southwestern coast of the island nation of Malta are unique freestanding stone monuments. Dating back 5,000 to 5,500 years ago, these prehistoric temples are among the oldest surviving examples of stone architecture in the world, and have been designated by UNESCO as part of the World Heritage register. The archeological park consists of two temples, Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra. Mnajdra is located several hundred meters downhill from the Ħaġar Qim temple site. Uncovered in 1839, the temples are constructed of globigerina limestone slabs weighing up to 57 tons. One upright menhir stands 5.2 meters (17.06 feet) high. The temples are sited on high cliffs along the coastline overlooking the Mediterranean Sea in the rural countryside of Malta. -
MALTESE E-NEWSLETTER 7 January 2018 1
MALTESE E-NEWSLETTER 7 January 2018 1 MALTESE E-NEWSLETTER 7 January 2018 Annual Festivals & Traditions The Maltese Islands have a number of religious festivities and cultural events that take place every year. Feast days are the life of the Islands and some holy days are actually national holidays, such as the feast of Santa Marija in mid-August. Others, such as the harvest festival of Mnarja at the end of June, are steeped in folklore. However, the most important events to all villages are their individual festas, honouring their parish patron saint. Religious holidays, such as Christmas and Easter, are highly celebrated, with the traditional festivities that go along with them. As families tend to be quite close-knit, the holidays are a time to strengthen the sense of community as well as reinforce family bonds. Church services play a large role during this time of year and during the Holy Week of Easter, many flock to the churches in great numbers for the‘seven visits', the visit of seven churches, to pay homage to the Altars of Repose. The festive commemorations are also a time of food, drink and merriment which brings out the Mediterranean roots of the locals. Families prepare large Christmasand Easter lunches; giving thanks for all that they have with their relatives. During these festas the streets are lined with carts, selling a wide assortment of differentfoods as well as the more traditional sweets and delicacies. Introduced relatively recently, cultural events such as the Malta Fireworks Festival, the Malta International Arts Festival, Notte Bianca, the Malta Jazz Festival , the Malta World Music Festival and Mediterranea in Gozo are becoming traditions in their own right. -

The Complete Sacred Music of Nicolò Isouard (1773 – 1818) and Maltese Sacred Music for the Order of Malta in the Late Eighteenth Century
The Complete Sacred Music of Nicolò Isouard (1773 – 1818) and Maltese Sacred Music for The Order of Malta in the Late Eighteenth Century. By Richard Sydney Benedict Divall Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa – Monash 1992) and Doctor of the University (Honoris Causa – Australian Catholic University 2004) A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy MCD University of Divinity 2013 MCD University of Divinity To Whom it May Concern This is to certify that the thesis and music editions presented by me for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy comprises only my original work except where due acknowledgment is made in the text to all other material used. Signature: ____________________________________ Name in Full: ____________________________________ Date: ____________________________________ Abstract. Nicolò Isouard (1773-1818) is considered Malta’s national composer. After studies in France and Naples, he returned to his homeland, where from 1794 to 1798 he was an aspiring composer, and employee of the Order of Malta. In 1994 a collection of thirty-three autographs of hitherto unknown sacred music by Isouard appeared at the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris, and I recognised the importance of these manuscripts. My intentions are to provide a précis on the Order, as the sovereign entity ruling Malta at the time, and the sacred music composed for them in their great Conventual Church in Valletta – now St John’s Co-Cathedral. The thesis will provide the background to Isouard’s early career and a complete edition and commentary of all of his sacred music, including additional works found during the research process, and a catalogue of his stage works. -
