Malta and Gozo - Experiences of a study tour from 14th to 21st September 2019 Text and Photos: Hans-Rudolf Neumann Saturday, 14th September 2019 The morning flight from Berlin via Frankfurt Main to Malta with Lufthansa ran without any incidents. But check-in service in Berlin leaves a lot to be desired; the transition to digital full automation to reduce staff provoked the oppo- site effect. Luggage check-in and boarding on two different ends of the airport caused anno- yance, while during boarding two flights were serviced on the same counter. One two Warsaw and one to Frankfurt Main – the line on luggage security was more than 200 people and it was safe to ask the pilot again if this is the right plane when entering the plane. The on-board meal on the flight to Frankfurt consisted of a 30 g al- mond tartlet of a 65 mm size and a drink, on the connecting flight to Malta we had a honey nut bar and another drink. Regarding that you had to leave the house at 4.45 am and entered the hotel in Malta around 12.40 pm, it was a re- Fig. 01: First group photo on the first day of the ex- markable performance, particularly as there was cursion: an INTERFEST study group with their no time to buy additional food in Frankfurt due wives and guests at the foot of the St. Michael bas- to the short connection time. ACTIVITY REPORT The 80th Grand Master of the Sovereign Order of Malta Fra’ Giacomo Dalla Torre del Tempio di Sanguinetto elected 2 May 2018 A message from the Grand Master As Grand Masters down the centuries before me have done, I now have the great re- Fra’ Giacomo sponsibility of leading our Order in its continuing mission of tuitio fidei et obsequium Dalla Torre pauperum (to care for those in need, inspired by our Christian principles) – which is in its almost one thousandth year. From the care for pilgrims and the sick in del Tempio Jerusalem carried out so long ago by our Founder Blessed Gérard and his congre- gation, to the care we give today to those in need, the Order has extended its reach di Sanguinetto but maintained its same inspiration. Our tradition is that of care and of a spiritual 80th Grand Master motivation. We have travelled through eras that have at times been difficult, but the of the Sovereign Order of Malta Order has always stayed the course and kept its focus on the most important mat- ters – our care for those who need us, with Christian love of our fellow man. The care we provide ranges over many kinds of support, and one of the most involv- ing at the moment is that of assisting the many thousands of refugees and migrants at all stages of their search for stability and a better life. We help them in their coun- tries of origin, on the routes they take to escape the crisis situations they leave be- hind and in the host countries.

MALTESE E-NEWSLETTER 7 January 2018 1 MALTESE E-NEWSLETTER 7 January 2018 Annual Festivals & Traditions The Maltese Islands have a number of religious festivities and cultural events that take place every year. Feast days are the life of the Islands and some holy days are actually national holidays, such as the feast of Santa Marija in mid-August. Others, such as the harvest festival of Mnarja at the end of June, are steeped in folklore. However, the most important events to all villages are their individual festas, honouring their parish patron saint. Religious holidays, such as Christmas and Easter, are highly celebrated, with the traditional festivities that go along with them. As families tend to be quite close-knit, the holidays are a time to strengthen the sense of community as well as reinforce family bonds. Church services play a large role during this time of year and during the Holy Week of Easter, many flock to the churches in great numbers for the‘seven visits', the visit of seven churches, to pay homage to the Altars of Repose. The festive commemorations are also a time of food, drink and merriment which brings out the Mediterranean roots of the locals. Families prepare large Christmasand Easter lunches; giving thanks for all that they have with their relatives. During these festas the streets are lined with carts, selling a wide assortment of differentfoods as well as the more traditional sweets and delicacies. Introduced relatively recently, cultural events such as the Malta Fireworks Festival, the Malta International Arts Festival, Notte Bianca, the Malta Jazz Festival , the Malta World Music Festival and Mediterranea in Gozo are becoming traditions in their own right.
