It includes the principal University library – the Bodleian Library – which has been a legal deposit library for 400 years; as well as 28 libraries across Oxford including major research libraries and faculty, department and institute libraries. Together, the Libraries hold more than 12 million printed items, over 80,000 e-journals and outstanding special collections including rare books and manuscripts, classical papyri, maps, music, art and printed ephemera. It is the centre for the study of archaeology and the ancient world as well as art and architectural history, from ancient to contemporary worldwide. The Sackler is part of Section 3 of the Humanities Libraries. Taylor Institution Library The Taylor Institution is the University’s centre for the study of modern European languages and literatures. The Taylorian building houses the Taylor Institution Library’s research collection and a teaching collection that is the main Oxford lending library for Modern Languages undergraduates and graduate students studying European cinema. With c.3000 registered borrowers, the Taylor Institution Library’s research and teaching collections are very busy and we aim to provide a timely, courteous and professional service to our readers. The Taylor Institution Library is part of Section 3 of the Humanities Libraries. Section 3, Humanities Libraries ‘Section 3’, Humanities Libraries support research and teaching/learning in: Ancient History, Archaeology, Art History, Classics, and Assyriology and Egyptology (Sackler Library); Middle Eastern/Islamic Studies and South Asian Studies (Nizami Ganjavi Library); and modern and medieval European languages and literatures, together with Linguistics, World Cinema, and Women’s Studies (Taylor Institution Library). The Sackler Library and the Taylor Institution Library hold the principal University library collections in their subjects and the Nizami Ganjavi Library complements the holdings of the Weston Library and other Oriental site libraries. All three libraries are lending libraries and provide access to material requested from the Book Storage Facility and the extensive electronic resources of the Bodleian Libraries. Readers are supported by the Reader Services team and a group of expert subject librarians covering the relevant fields of study. Page 3 of 10 For more information about the Section 3 libraries please visit: http://www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/taylor http://www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/sackler http://www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/ngl Bodleian Library Reader Services The Bodleian Reader Services Department is responsible for the provision of reading room services in the Bodleian Library reading rooms: the Upper Reading Room (subject coverage English and History at research level), Lower Reading Room (subject coverage Classics, Ancient History, Philosophy, Theology (including Patristics), and Reference), Duke Humfrey’s Library, Upper Radcliffe Camera (subject coverage History and English at undergraduate level) and the Lower Radcliffe Camera (History Faculty Library collection). Reader Services staff also undertake duties in the Gladstone Link, including roving support for readers and reshelving. Job description You may not be expected to carry out all of the duties detailed with this job description when based in this post, the main focus of this role being Reader Services. Please note that the percentage detailed next to each section, should act as a guideline for how much of this type of work the post holder can be expected to carry out in this specific role. Overview of the role The post holder will welcome readers and visitors and administer the library’s admissions procedures, respond to enquiries and provide direction to appropriate services. They will undertake a range of duties on front line desk(s) (including the lodge), at all times providing high quality customer service. According to the requirements of local library rotas and the role, some or all hours will be worked in the evenings and at weekends. The post holder may be required to work at other library locations from time to time. The post holder will work under the direction of one of the Reader Services Supervisors (Evening & Weekend). Responsibilities/duties may include Reader Services (70%) 1. Register readers correctly according to their status and welcome visitors. Provide an introduction to the library and explain standard reading room procedures and regulations to readers Page 4 of 10 2. Respond to queries in person, by phone and online; use online catalogues and other search tools including e-resources to help readers locate items within the Bodleian libraries and e-resources: , assist readers in the use of IT equipment including reader PCs and photocopier-printers, and refer readers to specialised library services and other library staff when appropriate 3. Work at the front line desk carrying out a full range of reader services transactions including: issuing, returning and renewing material; handling money; administering reserve collections, room bookings and inter-library loans; reserving books for readers and assisting them to make reservations and placing stack requests. Record statistics (e.g. records of occupancy of the reading rooms) 4. Open and close the library or reading room; provide security during opening hours through invigilation; follow evacuation procedures for the reading room in the event of an emergency and assist readers with disabilities or special needs to use the library and its collections, in accordance with legislation on equality 5. Support the document supply activities of the Bodleian Libraries through the retrieval and copying of extracts from the library collections Stock management (25%) 6.
