The report was commissioned from MOLA by Convoys Investment S.A.R.L.. Following the recommendations of the archaeological consultant CgMs in consultation with the London Borough of Lewisham and English Heritage, 52 evaluation trenches were excavated. Boreholes and trial pits excavated by a geotechnical contractor were also monitored. The results of the field evaluation have helped to refine the initial assessment of the archaeological potential of the site. Three main areas have been identified as particularly important: the area of the Great Dock near the east boundary of the site; the footprint of the Grade II listed Olympia building where the evaluation demonstrated that stone slipways survive; and the area of the early 16th century Tudor storehouse, a scheduled ancient monument. Other structures identified during the evaluation included: the large mast pond and the small mast pond in the west of the site; the dockyard basin; multiphase buildings; the remains of the 18th century dockyard wall; and other slipways. -

ABSTRACT This thesis sets out to investigate gardens, gardeners and gardening practices in early modern England, from the mid-sixteenth century when the first horticultural manuals appeared in the English language dedicated solely to the ‘Arte’ of gardening, spanning the following century to its establishment as a subject worthy of scientific and intellectual debate by the Royal Society and a leisure pursuit worthy of the genteel. The inherently ephemeral nature of the activity of gardening has resulted thus far in this important aspect of cultural life being often overlooked by historians, but detailed examination of the early gardening manuals together with evidence gleaned from contemporary gentry manuscript collections, maps, plans and drawings has provided rare insight into both the practicalities of gardening during this period as well as into the aspirations of the early modern gardener. -

CARIBBEAN APPEALS including Antigua, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, Dominica, East Florida, Grenada, Guiana, Jamaica, Leeward Islands, Montserrat, Nevis, St. Christopher, St. Vincent, Tobago, Tortola, West Florida This preliminary list of appeals was constructed from index entries in the Acts of the Privy Council, Colonial Series (APC), beginning with the year 1674 and ending with 1783. The focus is on appeals or petitions for leave to appeal with a definite lower court decision. A list by colony and section number of matters indexed as appeals but for which no lower court decision is apparent is provided for each volume of the APC. A smattering of disputes, not indexed as appeals (and so noted in this list), are included if the APC abstract uses appeals language. Prize cases are not included if the matter was referred to the Committee for Hearing Appeals on Prize. Appeals are listed according to the location in the margin note unless otherwise explained. The spelling of the names of parties is accepted as presented in the APC abstracts. Appeals with John Doe or Richard Roe as named parties are treated as if those parties were individuals. Significant doubt about the identity of the respondent(s) results in the designation ‘X, appeal of” as the name of the case. Given the abbreviated nature of the abstracts, additional research in the Privy Council registers, in genealogical records, and on matters of procedure will be needed to clarify the case names throughout and establish their accuracy. If the APC only uses wording such as “petition of John Jones referred,” the action was not assumed to be an appeal. -

The Throne Vision of Revelation 4 within the Context of Enochic and Merkavah Texts Introduction: Apocalypticism and Mysticism as Contested Categories The boundaries between apocalypticism and mysticism often appear unclear or blurred. This is not only due to the observation of mystical elements in apo- calyptic texts and of revelatory experiences within the context of mystical religion. It is, even more so, due to the fact that the two terms are scholarly categories subject to definition, and depending on their respective definitions, the group of texts or textual elements attributed to each category varies con- siderably. Furthermore, both terms have a long history of reception in Christian theology and biblical exegesis, and both have been intensely rejected by certain theological traditions. -

The exceptions are outer London districts which are listed towards the end. Key Listed status Statutory listing: whether a pub building is statutorily listed or not is spelled out, together with the grade at which it is listed LPA Local planning authority: giving the name of the London borough responsible for local planning and listed building matters ✩ National Inventory: pubs which are also on CAMRA’s National Inventory of Pub interiors of Outstanding Historic Interest Public transport London is well served by public transport and few of the pubs listed are far from a bus stop, Underground or rail station. The choice is often considerable and users will have no di≤culty in easily reaching almost every pub with the aid of a street map and a transport guide. A few cautionary words The sole concern of this Regional Inventory is with the internal historic fabric of pubs – not with qualities like their atmosphere, friendliness or availability of real ale that are featured in other CAMRA pub guides. Many Regional Inventory pubs are rich in these qualities too, of course, and most of them, but by no means all, serve real ale. But inclusion in this booklet is for a pub’s physical attributes only, and is not to be construed as a recommendation in any other sense. -

Lynn: Preserving the White Man’s Republic: The Democratic Party and the Transformation of American Conservatism, 1847-1860 (Under the direction of Harry L. Watson) In the late 1840s and 1850s, the American Democratic party redefined itself as “conservative.” Yet Democrats’ preexisting dedication to majoritarian democracy, liberal individualism, and white supremacy had not changed. Democrats believed that “fanatical” reformers, who opposed slavery and advanced the rights of African Americans and women, imperiled the white man’s republic they had crafted in the early 1800s. There were no more abstract notions of freedom to boundlessly unfold; there was only the existing liberty of white men to conserve. Democrats therefore recast democracy, previously a progressive means to expand rights, as a way for local majorities to police racial and gender boundaries. In the process, they reinvigorated American conservatism by placing it on a foundation of majoritarian democracy. Empowering white men to democratically govern all other Americans, Democrats contended, would preserve their prerogatives. With the policy of “popular sovereignty,” for instance, Democrats left slavery’s expansion to territorial settlers’ democratic decision-making. -

Alice Parker (b. 1925) Alice Parker studied at Smith College and then received her master’s degree from the Julliard School where she studied choral conducting with Robert Shaw. Ms. Parker arranged many works with Robert Shaw of folksongs, hymns and spirituals, which formed an enduring repertoire for choruses all around the world. One of her many folksong arrangements, Hark, I Hear The Harps Eternal, evokes a strong rhythmic drive with two intriguing juxtaposed motives. This folksong arrangement has been a staple in the choral repertoire for 40 years. Hark, I hear the harps eternal Ringing on the farther shore, As I near those swollen waters With their deep and solemn roar. Hallelujah, hallelujah, Hallelujah, Praise the Lamb!
