I know people from Sturgis to L.A., even France just because of spending time on two wheels. So, it is a surprise that Ron Martin, a fellow publisher, and I have never crossed paths that I know of. I was saddened to hear that on May 21st of 2020 he died suddenly of complications of diabetes. Dear friends of mine LOVED Ron, publisher of Ron Martin’s Souvenir Pocket Guide for the past 25 years. Sherry Fletcher and Willie from Tropical Tattoo have always told stories of Ron and his love of fellow bikers. I hear he was proud of his time in the Navy where he spent time on both the USS Midway and the USS Kitty Hawk. Ron is known for being a patriotic American. His love of the biking world is only surpassed by his love for his family. Ron was a good father to Ronnie and Robin and a loving son to his mom Barbara. His family member Fuzzy is surely missing him…his furry pet child! Another trait that I heard rumors of about Ron is a keen sense of humor and I was told once when a client who had a large dog did him dirty… Ron put a pile of dog doo on the map at the spot where that bar would have been on Main Street. When I heard that I often wished I had that amount of gonads!!! Don’t call it peaceful protest! Sit-ins were peaceful protests. The first person to stand and yell in a cop’s face, spit on them, throw pre-staged bricks and rocks at them, destroy vehicles, burn buildings, steal merchandise was the end of ANY peaceful protest! My nephew is a GOOD SWAT cop in rioting Louisville, Kentucky. I am fearful for him. I understand daily the fear blacks claim to feel for family members. The thug they are marching to honor has a criminal background that included burglary while holding a gun to a pregnant woman’s belly. He still didn’t deserve to be knelt on by a rogue cop until he couldn’t breathe, while his “bad apples” just stood there. But this isn’t the days of the Old Testament…it isn’t an eye for an eye in the U.S.A. and even if it was, as I am writing this, 7 cops have been shot, at least 2 have died, one of them a black cop…do Black Cops Lives not matter? Who the hell are these fools marching and giving cover to looters? Minority business owners still reeling from the coronavirus shut down now have broken windows, missing inventory and in at least one case have lost their lives in the crossfire. Let alone the total cost to our government that is trying to keep people fed while having less income tax to finance it all. I have seen on T.V.

    Meet Your Mixologist: Simon Ford | Société Perrier Bartender Simon Ford knows how to sling spirits. Hailing originally from London, Ford, like many of his compatriots, spent his early years making the rounds before his bar responsibilities mandated it. “I was a college dropout. I really had no choice,” he explained over coffee during his visit to the recent Portland (Oregon) Cocktail Week. “I was studying economics, and did one year of that, and I really didn’t like it. I decided to travel to Eastern Europe, the Berlin Wall and such, and when I came back, there really wasn’t much to do. So I got a job at a wine shop.” “It wasn’t much, twenty hours a week. I moved up from assistant manager to manager and so on. It was fine wines and overseas spirits, and I remember buying my first bottle of cachaça and making caipirinhas because it came with a muddler. Distributors gave us bottles and taught us about the spirits we were selling, and information that we would learn so we could recommend based on our own tastes. Although drinking bars originated in the West, economic and societal developments have spread the concept throughout China. In 2017, there were approximately 59,600 drinking bars in China, with a 44.06 billion RMB market size. Given societal development, the Chinese bar industry has gradually paid attention to environmental protection and sustainable development. A sustainable bar adopts a management model that reduces and recycles waste and saves energy. The social responsibility of bars is reflected in sustainable consumption. The concept of sustainable bars has been well-received worldwide. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (2030 Agenda) provides direction on sustainable development to relevant stakeholders. The 2030 Agenda contains 17 interactive Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including the SDG12. Thus, it is important to explore the development of Chinese sustainable bars under the 2030 Agenda and the 17 SDGs. Hence, the Institute for Sustainable Development Goals (TUSDG) of Tsinghua University, Pernod Ricard China, and Kantar China organized one tripartite research group and conducted investigations on drinking bars from three megacities (Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Beijing) to explore the situation, recognition, perspectives, and actions of sustainable bars in China. The results have significant implications. Moreover, the three parties jointly released the “Sustainable Bar Operation Initiatives” and the “Operational Sustainable Bar Application Guidelines” for the bar industry in China.

For rum— which also lists a long, torrid affair with umbrella drinks and an on-again, off-again thing with frozen- daiquiri machines in its relationship history—it’s been a long, lonely time since respectable suitors came calling. “Rum is the underdog of the spirits world,” says Matt Robold, a Southern California rum enthusiast who blogs at RumDood.com. “When people think of fine drinking, they think of whiskey or eight-times- distilled vodka—they turn their noses up at rum. Largely that’s because they’re only familiar with the low- end stuff, so as an aficionado you feel like you have to evangelize it.” It’s identified primarily with the Caribbean, but rum is a global spirit, distilled in more than 100 countries and with roots in places ranging from Thailand to Tennessee and New England to Australia. At its simplest, rum is a spirit derived from sugarcane, but rum is rarely simple.
