Hull History Centre: Papers of the Palmes Family of Naburn U DDPA Papers of the Palmes Family of Naburn 13th cent. - 1906 Biographical Background: The Palmes family traced its pedigree back to Manfred Palmes who was living in 1140 and had lands in Taunton, Somerset. It is a family unique in being able to trace an unbroken inheritance from son to son from the twelfth century to 1974, with only one exception in the eighteenth century. In 1226 lands at Naburn in East Yorkshire were assigned to William Palmes by Richard de Watervill, the brother of Maud de Watervill, William Palmes's wife. The demesne lordship of Naburn then descended in the Palmes family to the twentieth century (Baines, Old Naburn, p. 45; Allison, History of York East Riding, iii, p. 77; Foster, Pedigrees, iii). Naburn is about three miles south of York and the Palmes family built a manor house on the east bank of the River Ouse. The house was first mentioned in 1345 and had eight hearths in 1672. A drawing of circa 1720 indicates a two storey house, three bays in length with attic windows in high gables. In other words, the family was comfortably-wealthy, although it was not until the early sixteenth century that any of the male members of the family held public office. William Palmes, who was living in the middle of the fifteenth century, married Ellen Rocliffe, whose father was one of the barons of the exchequer. She provided him with three male heirs and a daughter before taking the veil during his lifetime, in 1479. -

A guide and list to a collection of Historic Railway Documents www.railarchive.org.uk to e mail click here December 2017 1 Since July 1971, this private collection of printed railway documents from pre grouping and pre nationalisation railway companies based in the UK; has sought to expand it‟s collection with the aim of obtaining a printed sample from each independent railway company which operated (or obtained it‟s act of parliament and started construction). There were over 1,500 such companies and to date the Rail Archive has sourced samples from over 800 of these companies. Early in 2001 the collection needed to be assessed for insurance purposes to identify a suitable premium. The premium cost was significant enough to warrant a more secure and sustainable future for the collection. In 2002 The Rail Archive was set up with the following objectives: secure an on-going future for the collection in a public institution reduce the insurance premium continue to add to the collection add a private collection of railway photographs from 1970‟s onwards provide a public access facility promote the collection ensure that the collection remains together in perpetuity where practical ensure that sufficient finances were in place to achieve to above objectives The archive is now retained by The Bodleian Library in Oxford to deliver the above objectives. This guide which gives details of paperwork in the collection and a list of railway companies from which material is wanted. The aim is to collect an item of printed paperwork from each UK railway company ever opened. -

1 2 When VE Day dawns on 8th May 2020 it will be 75 years since the guns fell silent at the end of the war in Europe. Years of carnage and destruction had come to an end and millions of people took to the streets and pubs to celebrate peace, mourn their loved – ones and to hope for the future, but not forgetting those still in conflict until 15th August when it was announced that Japan had surrendered unconditionally to the Allies, effectively ending World War II. The 75th anniversary will provide our nation, and our friends around the world, with an opportunity to reflect on the enormous sacrifice, courage and determination of people from all walks of life who saw us through this dark and terrifying period. To commemorate this important time we are organising VE Day 75, a three-day international celebration that will take place from 8th May to 10th May 2020. It will be an opportunity for us all to remember the enormous sacrifices that were made at home and abroad and to joyously celebrate as people did 75 years ago, the arrival of peace in Europe. CAMPAIGNERS in West Yorkshire are extremely concerned about lack of progress by the Government and Network Rail on infrastructure proposals that should deliver improvements for travellers in the next few years, including the TransPennine Route Upgrade (TRU). Three rail user groups and the Yorkshire Branch of Railfuture have written to Andrew Haines, Chief Executive of Network Rail, who was recently been quoted as casting doubt on TRU. In a magazine interview (RAIL 897, 29 Jan’2020) Haines had said the scope of TRU could depend on the high-speed rail proposal “Northern Powerhouse Rail” (NPR). The campaigners say NPR is decades away and will not benefit stations on regional routes that desperately need investment now. Camden Railway Station a Reminder of Incessant Government Under-Funding of the Nsw Rail System
CAMDEN RAILWAY STATION A REMINDER OF INCESSANT GOVERNMENT UNDER-FUNDING OF THE NSW RAIL SYSTEM These notes relate only to the history of the passenger facilities at the Camden terminus. The history of the branch line has already been published. Alan Smith, a long-time member of the Australian Railway Historical Society and a frequent volunteer at its Resource Centre, won the competition to choose the cover photo for these notes. It seems strange that Alan chose a photograph not of the terminus but of an intermediate station, Kenny Hill. Why? Alan considered that this was the “iconic image of the challenges that existed in the day-to-day operation of the Camden line”. Specifically, the photograph shows the absence of priority given to passengers when the train crew had to decide whether to convey people or freight. It should be of no surprise that people lost out. Bob Merchant took this undated photograph on a day when the steam locomotive simply could not succeed in climbing the gradient. In the composition of the train were two milk pots. They were next to the engine. There was no question of reversing the train to Narellan, shunting and then proceeding with the only the passenger car. Why not? Because the milk pots had to be attached to No. 32 Express Goods or there would be serious trouble for the train crew if the Camden milk did not accompany the other milk vans from Bowral and Menangle on the train. What! Passengers are voters. Not so much in 1963 when the line closed.
