  • Meaningful Choice As Expression of Creativity in Gameplay
Meaningful Choice as Expression of Creativity in Gameplay A Preliminary Typology of Creative Gameplay in Videogames Abstract Gamification guru Yu-Kai Chou positions creativity as the ultimate motivational drive as it both addresses intrinsic motivation as well as positive emotions. Creativity and play have long been linked together and, despite many attempts to grasp them, have maintained elusive concept because their expressions have an enormous variety. Yet, creative gameplay has rarely been analyzed as a whole, research often lingering on a single variant of it, mostly tangible player production in videogames. This thesis offers a framework based on Chou’s concept of meaningful choices for identifying varieties of creative gameplay and offers a preliminary typology of creative gameplay in videogames. • Gender in Littlebigplanet
Gender in LittleBigPlanet Analysis of LittleBigPlanet’s Costumes Faculty of Arts Department of Game Design Author: Nicolina Åkerfelt Bachelor’s Thesis in Game Design, 15 hp Program: Game Design and Programming Supervisor: Magnus Johansson Examiner: Iwona Hrynczenko June, 2015 Abstract In this study, ninety costumes from the LittleBigPlanet (Media Molecule, 2008, 2011; Sumo Digital 2014) franchise were analyzed in order to answer the question on how the LittleBigPlanet series have represented diversity of different genders through the available costumes to a seemingly gender neutral character. This is done by dividing the costumes into three categories: feminine, masculine and neutral. The costumes are categorized according to set criteria, and in the results it is revealed that there are mostly feminine costumes, even though the difference is minor. The study also analyses how different gender-coded costumes in the LittleBigPlanet series are portrayed, and several traits are found to be reoccurring. Finally, it is discussed whether having portrayed stereotypical body images were suitable for the age of their audience, and it is also stated that the costumes of the LittleBigPlanet franchise are generally diversified. Keywords: Gender in videogames, LittleBigPlanet, character customization, sex roles, stereotypes in games.

  • Keilen 1 Platformer As Platform: Littlebigplanet and the Limits Of
Keilen 1 Platformer as Platform: LittleBigPlanet and the Limits of Protocol Brian Keilen University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Keilen 2 The platformer, a game in which the player must traverse the environment by jumping between various platforms, is one of the oldest video game genres. In fact, some of the most iconic video games of all time have been platformers, from arcade games like Donkey Kong (1981) to the game that has nearly become synonymous with video games themselves, Super Mario Bros. (1985). It is appropriate, then, that Media Molecule’s LittleBigPlanet came in the guise of a platformer. On the surface, the game appears to be not unlike any other entry in the genre. But LittleBigPlanet added one major twist when it was released for Sony’s PlayStation 3 console in the fall of 2008: The game came with a robust set of tools that allowed players to build their own levels. In addition to the level-building tools, LittleBigPlanet also featured several other deviations from the traditional platformer format. Not could players design their own levels, they could also share these levels with gamers across the globe via Sony’s PlayStation Network. Once levels were uploaded, they could be tagged with various descriptions and rated with a star system. A sequel to the game, LittleBigPlanet 2, was released in 2010 and gives users even more powerful tools, even allowing them to experiment in different genres. Although these changes may have been subtle on the surface, they marked a major shift in the way video games are packaged and consumed.

  • Black Boxes and Co-Creation in Littlebigplanet 2
Black Boxes and Co-Creation in LittleBigPlanet 2 Dave Jones Old Dominion University United States [email protected] Abstract This paper discusses black boxes and their role as mediators in the user experience of co- creative networks. Using Actor Network Theory, I trace the people, groups, and technologies that assemble around the moderation of player-generated content in Media Molecule‘s LittleBigPlanet 2. More specifically, I examine the Good Grief! System‘s role in mediating the moderation process between player-creators and moderators. This system frames moderation as a participatory practice initiated by people playing levels. However the system also establishes a black box around the processes of assessing and moderating reported levels. This makes the moderation process opaque to the player-creator community, locking them away from the moderation process and disempowering them as creative agents. Co-creative networks enable participation, but use black boxes to structure the participatory activities that player-creators pursue. As a result, much of the coordinative and collaborative work of network participants centers upon the black box, what it renders invisible, and how to test its boundaries. Keywords co-creation, participatory culture, games, black boxes, actor network theory Introduction Co-creation has emerged as an integral component of the participatory experience for many popular media franchises. As Jenkins (1992 & 2006) notes, fans of popular books, films, and games often seek to take part in the meaningful construction of their fan experiences, turning to the creation of many forms of content in order to do so. Co-creation enlists the fan‘s 1 desire to participate in the meaningful creation of culture so that this participation is also productive and valuable for those who own that culture in the form of intellectual property (IP) (Deuze, 2007; Kucklich, 2005; Terranova, 2000 & 2004).
