Will Sony╎s Fourth Playstation Lead to a Second Sony V. Universal?
WILL SONY’S FOURTH PLAYSTATION LEAD TO A SECOND SONY V. UNIVERSAL? † SETH ASCHER ABSTRACT Sony has included a “share” button on the next version of their popular PlayStation video game system. This feature is meant to allow players to record and share videos of their gameplay. This service shares similarities with the controversial “record” button that Sony included with its Betamax players over thirty years ago. The Betamax player was the subject of the landmark case Sony v. Universal, a foundational case for the modern application of copyright law to new technology. This Issue Brief examines how this “share” feature would fare under the framework laid out by Sony v. Universal and other evolutions in copyright law. INTRODUCTION On February 20, 2013, Sony announced their newest videogame system, predictably named the PlayStation 4.1 Chief among its new features is the share button displayed prominently on its controller.2 Microsoft’s newest offering also has a similar feature.3 Pressing the share button will allow a player to post images or videos of their gameplay to the internet, sharing them with their friends and complete strangers.4 The PlayStation 4 even buffers the last few minutes of gameplay so that a player can share their gameplay video after the fact.5 Sony’s intention is to provide an easy way for players to share images and videos online. Exploring the experiences of gamers playing as multiple first-person video game protagonists in Halo 3: ODST’s single-player narrative Richard Alexander Meyers Bachelor of Arts Submitted in fulfilment of the requirement for the degree of Master of Arts (Research) School of Creative Practice Creative Industries Faculty Queensland University of Technology 2018 Keywords First-Person Shooter (FPS), Halo 3: ODST, Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), ludus, paidia, phenomenology, video games. i Abstract This thesis explores the experiences of gamers playing as multiple first-person video game protagonists in Halo 3: ODST, with a view to formulating an understanding of player experience for the benefit of video game theorists and industry developers. A significant number of contemporary console-based video games are coming to be characterised by multiple playable characters within a game’s narrative. The experience of playing as more than one video game character in a single narrative has been identified as an under-explored area in the academic literature to date. An empirical research study was conducted to explore the experiences of a small group of gamers playing through Halo 3: ODST’s single-player narrative. Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was used as a methodology particularly suited to exploring a new or unexplored area of research and one which provides a nuanced understanding of a small number of people experiencing a phenomenon such as, in this case, playing a video game. Data were gathered from three participants through experience journals and subsequently through two semi- structured interviews. The findings in relation to participants’ experiences of Halo 3: ODST’s narrative were able to be categorised into three interrelated narrative elements: visual imagery and world-building, sound and music, and character. -

BACHELOR THESIS “How does Sound Design Impact the Players Perception of the Level of Difficulty in a First Person Shooter Game?” Sebastian Darth 2015 Bachelor of Arts Audio Engineering Luleå University of Technology Department of Arts, Communication and Education 1 “How does sound design impact the players perception of the level of difficulty in a first person shooter game?” Sebastian Darth 2015 Bachelor of Science Audio Engineering Luleå University of Technology Department of Arts, Communication and Education 2 Abstract This research paper explore if a games sound design have an impact on a games perceived difficulty from a players point of view. The game industry produces many game titles that are similar in terms of mechanics and controls, for example, first person shooter games. This thesis investigates if the differences in sound design matter. Where many first person shooter games are very similar in terms of gameplay, controls and sound design, these sound designs are similar though not identical. With new information on how players use sound when they play games, interesting new games styles, mechanics and kinds of game-play could be explored. This study found that players use the sounds of his or her allies in the game more than any other sound when presented different tasks in games. It was also shown that players use the sound of weapon fire to know where their targets are and when they need to take cover to avoid defeat. Finally it was suggested that loud weapons might impact the perceived difficulty as it might cover the sounds of the various voices. -

While Killzone: Shadow Fall and inFAMOUS: Second Son have given us a glimpse of how Sony's popular franchises can be enhanced and expanded on the PlayStation 4, The Order: 1886 is exciting for a completely different reason. This isn't something familiar given a facelift-- this is a totally new project, one whose core ideas and gameplay were born on next-generation hardware. It's interesting, then, that this also serves as the first original game for developer Ready at Dawn. Ideas for The Order originally began forming in 2006 as a project that crafted fiction from real-life history and legends. Indeed, one of the game's more intriguing elements is that mix of fantasy and reality. This alternate-timeline Victorian London is covered in a layer of grit and grime true to that era, contrasted by dirigibles flying through the sky and fantastical weapons used by the game's protagonists, four members of a high-tech (for the times) incarnation of the Knights of the Round Table. That idea of blending different aspects together may be what's most compelling about The Order: 1886 beyond just its premise. The first thing you notice is the game's visual style. There's a cinematic, film-like look to everything, and not only are the overall graphical qualities and camera angles tweaked to reflect that, but The Order also runs in widescreen the entire time--not just during cutscenes like in other games. It's a decision that some have bemoaned, since those top and bottom areas of the screen are now "missing" during game-play. -
