The plant life-forms analysis demonstrates that the therophytes, geophytes and chamephytes prevail in their floristic structure, which is also typical for the shrub communities in this region. During the field study this vegetation type has been mapped and its total area of occupancy has been calculated. For a first time it is proposed this habitat to be divided into three habitat sub-types due to the established differences in the environmental factors. Some recommendations have been proposed on the conservation management and also complements on the habitat‘s descriptions in EUNIS habitat classification. Mladenović1 1 Department of Agrobotany, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Belgrade, Belgrade, Zemun, Serbia 2 Department of Ecology, Institute for Biological Research „Siniša Stanković“, University of Belgrade, Belgrade, Serbia *Corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract: The pollen morphology of Dianthus petraeus (Caryophyllaceae), which is endemic to the Balkans, has been examined by both light and scanning electron microscopy in order to provide taxonomically valuable characters that might be used in the classification of the Caryophyllaceae, as well as to contribute to the pollen atlas of Serbian apiflora. The pol- len grains of D. petraeus are radially symmetrical, apolar, spheroidal and medium-sized. The mean of the pollen diameter is 45.5±1.4 µm. The sculpturing pattern of exine is microechinate-microperforate, and the tectum is covered with minute echini averaging 0.8±0.1 µm in length, more or less evenly distributed between the perforations. The microechini average number per sample area of 5 µm x 5 µm is 3.2±0.6. In view of the number, position and type of the apertures, the grains are polypantoporate, with about 13 operculate pores, averaging 6.4±0.7 µm in diameter. Each operculum is covered with 4-6 conical spinules, which are longer than those on the exine surface. The obtained palynological results provide information that contribute towards a better understanding of the taxonomic status of D. -

(Caryophyllaceae) cinsinin 89 taksonuna ait 100 örneğin polen morfolojik özellikleri ışık (LM) ve taramalı elektron (SEM) mikroskobu altında incelenip, tanımlanmış ve karşılaştırılmıştır. Polenler radyal simetrili, apolar nadiren isopolar, pantopoliporat ve şekli sferoidaldır. Ornamentasyon skabrat, skabrat-perforat, skabrat-perforat-foveolattır. Spinüller arası ornamentasyon psilat ya da granülattır. Apertür prominet veya sunken özellik gösterir. Ekzin subtektat. Sekzin nekzinden daha kalındır. 10 µm²’de spinül sayısı 9-28, punktum sayısı 1-23 arasında değişmektedir. Por sayısı taksonlar arasında 12 ± 3’den 24 ± 3’e kadar değişiklik göstermektedir. Polen karakterlerine göre UPGMA metodu kullanılarak taksonlar arasındaki filogenetik ilişki belirlenmiştir. Dianthus taksonlarının ayrımında kullanılan polen morfolojik karakterlerin önem derecesini belirlemek amacıyla PCA yani temel bileşenler analizi yapılmıştır. Journey time was just under three hours and once we had changed currency into the local lek and collected our luggage, we were met by our genial local guide Ardi. He was very knowledgeable on the history and culture of Albania and during our two-hour drive to Berat, informed us about many things Albanian. We were struck by the proliferation of petrol stations here! As we arrived at the Mangalemi Hotel in historic Berat we were treated to a large meal just before bed time! Day 2 Wednesday 31st May Divjaka-Karavasta National Park & Berat As we didn’t get to bed until gone midnight, we had breakfast at 7.30am looking over the cobbled road in glorious warm sunshine. The food choice was good and the rooms comfortable. Red-rumped Swallows were seen by the hotel with more familiar Barn Swallow and House Martin. We were then ready for our first trip out of Berat with a two-hour drive to the Karavasta Lagoon on the coast to the north-west. -

The middle of June is a good time to visit this part of Bulgaria as the mountain roads and passes are mostly clear of snow and the alpine flora is at its best. We were able to visit some high-altitude sites, many of them above the tree-line, where we found fascinating alpine flowers growing in profusion. We enjoyed pleasant walks through forests of native firs and pines where the flora, and the birds and insects, were of great interest. Travelling through the largely unspoilt countryside gave us the chance to see the type of agriculture still practiced here. White Storks are a still- familiar sight in Bulgaria, with their large nests being seen in many of the villages. There was time to visit the extraordinary Rila Monastery, a world heritage site, and to explore some of the quiet villages and towns. -

White flowers zigzag along spikes and culminate with purple-veined, pink flowers set above a white calyx. Denver Botanic Gardens grows more than 20 taxa of Acantholimon, with a majority living in the Rock Alpine Garden. ABOUT THE ARTIST Estelle DeRidder is a 2010 graduate of the Gardens’ School of Botanical Art and Illustration. The classes have inspired and challenged DeRidder to capture the complexity and beauty of the plant form. DeRidder’s email is: [email protected] SCHOOL OF BOTANICAL ART AND ILLUSTRATION The school’s curriculum is a comprehensive series of classes in botanical illustration that provides participants with the skills needed to render accurate, detailed and useful depictions of the plant world. The program is for the dedicated illustrator, as well as the devoted amateur. Students join the program to earn a foundational certificate or advanced diploma in botanical illustration, or to improve and broaden their skills through ongoing classes. THE STEPPE THEME The mission of Denver Botanic Gardens is to connect people with plants, especially plants from the Rocky Mountain region and similar regions around the world, providing delight and enlightenment to everyone. The Index Seminum program reflects that mission by offering germplasm from plants of the Rocky Mountain region, and correlative climates that are generally described as steppe. Steppe is the focus of several of our collections and the subject of a forthcoming book by Gardens staff, “Steppes: The Plants and Ecology of the World’s Semi-arid Regions”, scheduled for release by Timber Press on July 1, 2015. -

ZHELEV, L. EVSTATIEVA and D. DIMITROV, 2013. The ecological and fl oristic characteristics of popula- tions of Sideritis scardica Griseb. in Slavyanka mountain. Bulg. J. Agric. Sci., Supplement 2, 19: 211–217 Sideritis scardica Griseb. is an endangered species with threatened and extremely vulnerable populations. The current study provides information about the population state and structure, vegetation dynamics and the place of the species in habi- tats in all locations of Slavyanka Mountain. Three localities of the species are investigated – at the base of the peaks Golyam Tsarev Vrah, Shabran and Gotsev Vrah. The studied populations of Sideritis scardica in all three localities are unstable and threatened. A list of diversity of vascular plants is made for each locality. The taxonomic structure of the fl ora and the ecologi- cal and biological characteristics are defi ned. Most of the dominant species (103) are long-lived, clonal perennials and only 9 species are annuals. The main geographical elements are those with Mediterranean origin or close to it. On näidatud, et suur osa neist on lahknenud evolutsiooniliselt hiljuti ja lühikese aja jooksul, mistõttu oleks nelkide näitel võimalik uurida radiatsiooni, üht evolutsiooni olulist protsessi. Häid meetodeid nende fülogeneesi uurimiseks jaoks pole veel leitud, seega uurib töö, kas nelkide sektsiooni Plumaria sisest geneetilist variatsiooni ja fülogeneetilisi suhteid on võimalik uurida genoomides levinud lühikeste korduvjärjestuste e. mikrosatelliitide abil. 11 nelgi liigis tuvastati 146 alleeli 10-st tuuma lookusest ning leiti, et suur osa varieeruvusest on liikide sees. Peakoordinaatanalüüs ja dendrogrammid näitasid, et liigid ei eristunud üksteisest, v.a D. superbus ja D. plumarius. Seega, antud mikrosatelliitmarkerite abil on nende fülogeneesi raske uurida. Põhjuseid võib olla mitmeid – sektsiooni kunstlik püstitus, kehv geneetiline eristuvus ning perekonna jaoks välja töötatud markerite ebasobivus liikidevahelise fülogeneesi uuringuks. This has been shown by various studies, thus it is potentially possible to use this genus in order to investigate the evolutionary mechanism of rapid diversification or radiation.
