At university she stud- ied the literature of the Heian period (the ancient Japanese era lasting from the 8th to 12 centuries AD). She was deeply attracted to stories of ghosts and ogres in Genji Monogatari (The Tale of Genji), and fell more and more into the world of traditional folklore. She currently lives in Osaka with her husband and two sons. There was a long era of writing stories that I wanted to read for myself. The origin of my creativity is the desire to write about a wonderous world that children can walk into from their everyday life. This clever brute is considered to be more skillful than any other ai~imalin taking human shape and haunting and possessing men. Moreover, the fox is the messenger of Inari, the Rice goddess, which, as we shall see below, is only a later expression of the fact that Inari, the Spirit of the Rice, was believed to have a vulpine shape. It is clear that this belief gave the fox a double character in the eyes of the Japanese people: that of a beneficent god, representing the Rice, the greatest blessing of the country, and, on the other hnnd, that of a wicked demon, haunting and possessing men. Not so important and complicated is the badger, of whose three kinds, the arnl~ki(@-I, mr~/i'~za(a) and 7tznrtzr (m,the first is the principal in folklore and is very orten combined with the fox in the term Lori (a@), or " foxes and badgers."' JAMES GLEESON INTERVIEWS: MARTIN SHARP 7 November 1979 JAMES GLEESON: Martin, youʼve become, I suppose, identified in the general mind as the one artist in Australia whoʼs given the pop movement a sort of local habitation and a name. Youʼve given it an Australian characteristic. How did you become interested in the pop movement, or pop art? Was it always there? MARTIN SHARP: Well, Iʼve always been interested in comics and things like that, I suppose. I learnt to read with comics. Perhaps the first thing I remember about a real figure appearing in a comic, Orson Wells made an appearance in a Superman comic, I think, doing his War of the Worlds broadcast or something like that. I was always rather puzzled. I can remember that one quite clearly from some time back, of the character, a real character appearing in—not that I really knew who Orson Wells was. JAMES GLEESON: This goes back a long time? MARTIN SHARP: Yes, yes. JAMES GLEESON: To your childhood. MARTIN SHARP: When I was, yes, learning to read. I really learnt to read with comics rather than books. JAMES GLEESON: Really? You were born here in Sydney? MARTIN SHARP: Yes. JAMES GLEESON: What date? MARTIN SHARP: Twenty-first of January 1942. JAMES GLEESON: Comics sort of taught you to read. MARTIN SHARP: Yes. JAMES GLEESON: As far as art training goes, I suppose, I assume you drew as soon as you could talk. MARTIN SHARP: Yes. I did sort of adventures with ants, I think, as pirates and lots of drawings like this. -

Die Forschung konzentriert sich auf maennlichen Figuren und andere Figuren mit maennlichen Funktionen (Protagonisten, Antagonisten und Nebenfiguren inklu- siv), die sich mit sich selbst, mit anderen maennlcihen oder weiblichen Figuren, Tieren oder uebernatuer- lichen Wesen konfrontieren. Die Forschung untersucht auch deren Benehmen in und ihre Interaktion mit der Maerchenumgebung in drei Gruppen - der Mann in der Familie, der Mann in der Gesellschaft und der Mann in der Natur. Als Methoden werden Literatur-analyse, Textstruktur-analyse, vergleichende Volk- skunde, Anthropologie, Gender Studies und Psychologie verwendet; Interpretationen von japanischer Kultur, sozio-historische Realitaet, Philosophie, Religion, Aesthetik und Volksglauben sind auch inbe- griffen. The present research offers a study ofmale dramatis personae appearing in the collection of Japanese ordinary tales ”Nihon Mukashi-banashi Shu- sei”, compiled by Keigo Seki in the years 1950 - 1958. Key interest is taken in male figures or other figures with male functions, be them protagonists, antagonists or bit players, in other words - on the character of ”man” defined by his masculine role and seen in conflict with himself, other male and female characters, animal figures and representatives of the supernatural; as well as his actions in and interaction withthe tale environment. -
Various Aspects of Mimesis in Selected Sea Novels of Frederick
CHAPTER ONE Mimetic Desire: Frederick Marryat’s The Phantom Ship (1839) In her introduction to the Polish edition of The Phantom Ship, Maria Janion defines Marryat’s Gothic sea novel as a romantic tragedy of fate having its roots in ancient tragedies. Characterized by pessimism and fatalism, Janion argues, the British nov- elist’s work focuses on ananke inherent in the protagonists’ acts. She claims that in The Phantom Ship Marryat concentrates on the problems typical of Greek trage- dies: firstly, whether or not man is to be blamed for circumstances that are not un- der his control, and, secondly, whether or not it will ever be possible for man to conquer and master the overwhelmingly powerful force which orchestrates his life, be it fate, fortune, destiny, ananke, or fatum. Janion maintains that in ancient trage- dies all efforts to master one’s fate, to reject the role of a puppet, and to act in ac- cordance with one’s own scenario are futile. The researcher claims further that all protagonists are devoid of free will, and hence presented in The Phantom Ship as toys in the hands of omnipotent fate (5–22). Although Janion’s claim that Marryat illustrates human condition applying the topos of theatrum mundi is justified, I would like to argue that while presenting his protagonists as actors on the stage of the theatre of the world, Marryat does not emphasize the lack of free will and illusion of moral independence. On the contra- ry, he seems to suggest that human beings are not puppets unable to show any initi- ative whatsoever, but they are able to act freely and independently in the perfor- mance of life. -

It was 7:00 at night and like every night he could hear the train going by. It usually went by twice each night 7:15 and 7:oo. Ryan lived right around the corner from where the bridge that the train went over was. Ryan sat up out of bed and looked around. Ryan was 20 years old he lived alone except for his husky, remy. the train seemed to really bother remy Ryan didn’t know why, because remy had heard trains before but never got this freaked out . The bridge that the train went over turned into a bike path. Ryan would take remy on walks going over the bridge all the time but the thing ryan thought was really weird was that there were no train tracks on the bridge so how could the train
