Status of the Umbelliferae ssp. in Russia Tatiana Khmelinskaya Olga Zvereva Anna Artemyeva The collection status The formation of Russian Umbelliferae collection had begun in 1923 after N.I.Vavilov visit West-European countries, USA and Canada (1921- 1922), from the seed samples shipped by breeding companies of the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Austria. Russian resources were registered in VIR collection through All-Russian agricultural exhibition. The local landraces were collected during collection missions in Afghanistan, Iran, Armenia, Uzbekistan, Turkey, etc. In 1926 VIR scientists started to study the collection. From 1928 the new expeditions were arranged to Mediterranean countries, Ethiopia, and Western China by Vavilov, to India by Markovich, to Minor Asia of Zhukovskiy, etc. , and also collection had started to grow by exchange of material with different Institutes and companies. Now VIR Genebank contains genetic resources of different status from more than 90 countries, includes wild species, landraces, old and advanced cultivars, hybrids F1, breeding materials . Umbelliferae collections are divided into two parts: constant (base) catalogue and temporary catalogue. The constant catalogue includes landraces and breeding cultivars with sufficient quantity of seeds in accession. All accessions of constant catalogue are documented for computerized passport data. The temporary catalogue includes the hybrids F1, breeding materials and the samples with insufficient quantity of seeds. These latter cultivars need to

Goji berry (Lycium barbarum), as a Chinese traditional herb and food supplement, contains many nutrients and phytochemicals, such as polysaccharides, scopoletin, the glucosylated precursor, amino acids, flaconoids, carotenoids, vitamins and minerals. It has positive effects on anitcancer, antioxidant activities, retinal function preservation, anti-diabetes, immune function and anti-fatigue. Widely used in traditional Chinese medicine, Goji berries can be sold as a dietary supplement or classified as nutraceutical food due to their long and safe traditional use. Modern Goji pharmacological actions improve function and enhance the body ,s ability to adapt to a variety of noxious stimuli; it significantly inhibits the generation and spread of cancer cells and can improve eyesight and increase reserves of muscle and liver glycogens which may increase human energy and has anti-fatigue effect. Goji berries may improve brain function and enhance learning and memory. It may boost the body ,s adaptive defences, and significantly reduce the levels of serum cholesterol and triglyceride, it may help weight loss and obesity and treats chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis. www.ccsenet.org/jas Journal of Agricultural Science Vol. 4, No. 4; 2012 Deodorizing Ability of Houttuynia cordata Thunb. (Dokudami) for Masking Garlic Odor Hiromi Ikeura (Corresponding author) School of Agriculture, Meiji University 1-1-1, Higashimita, Tama-ku, Kawasaki, Kanagawa, 214-8571, Japan Tel: 81-44-934-7167 E-mail: [email protected] Received: December 6, 2011 Accepted: December 19, 2011 Online Published: February 2, 2012 doi:10.5539/jas.v4n4p245 URL: http://dx.doi.org/10.5539/jas.v4n4p245 Abstract The deodorizing activity of dokudami (HouttuyniacordataThunb.) for masking the odor of fresh garlic was investigated, and the volatility of the deodorizing compounds was examined. Two grams of garlic was placed in a beaker and heated for 5 min at 40 °C. Next, aliquots of 0.01 and 0.05 g of powdered samples of seven plants (dokudami, thyme, rosemary, coriander, dandelion, spiny sow thistle and green tea) were mixed with 1 ml of volatile or non-volatile dokudami extract and added to the garlic sample. The garlic odor intensity was subsequently evaluated by sniffing by 10 trained individuals. The deodorizing activity test was carried out at 0, 3 and 6 h after adding the dokudami extract. The deodorizing effect of dokudami on masking garlic odor was the highest of any plant and became higher with increased dose. In addition, the deodorizing activity of dokudami increased with time and persisted. Moreover, whether the deodorizing compounds of dokudami were volatile or non-volatile was investigated. The deodorizing activity of a volatile solution of dokudami against garlic was extremely higher than that of dokudami dry powder.

www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Central Composite Design for Optimizing the Biosynthesis of Silver Nanoparticles using Plantago major Extract and Investigating Antibacterial, Antifungal and Antioxidant Activity Ghazal Nikaeen1, Saeed Yousefnejad1 ✉ , Samane Rahmdel2, Fayezeh Samari3 & Saeideh Mahdavinia1 Central composite design (CCD) was applied to optimize the synthesis condition of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using the extract of Plantago major (P. major) seeds via a low cost and single-step process. The aqueous seed extract was applied as both reducing element and capping reagent for green production of AgNPs. Five empirical factors of synthesis including temperature (Temp), pH, volume of P. major extract (Vex), volume of AgNO3 solution (VAg) and synthesis time were used as independent variables of model and peak intensity of Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) originated from NPs as the dependent variable. The predicted optimal conditions was determined to be: Temp = 55 °C, pH = 9.9,Vex = 1.5 mL, VAg = 30 mL, time = 60 min. The characterization of the prepared AgNPs at these optimum conditions was conducted by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray difraction (XRD) to determine the surface bio- functionalities. Bio-activity of these AgNPs against bacteria and fungi were evaluated based on its assay against Micrococcus luteus, Escherichia coli and Penicillium digitatum. Furthermore, antioxidant capacity of these NPs was checked using the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay. Nanotechnology is an important feld of modern research which has been the principal of various technologies and main innovations; and is expected to be the basis of many other outstanding innovations in future.

Funding has varied over the years, but to date the ‘Bank’ has provided $15,450,000 of chemicals that were used to treat invasive plants on 700,000 acres of public conservation land. For private contractors, chemicals typically comprise up to 10% of the total project cost-their major cost being labor. Thus, in comparison, that $15 million of “free” chemicals has saved the Uplands Program ten times that amount in “free” labor. Now that’s a bargain! Herbicide Bank Operational Procedures How do I request chemicals from the Herbicide Bank? As in previous years, requests will be submitted to the Herbicide Bank using the Request Form (Appendix I).

Index Seminum 2015 List of seeds for exchange Glasgow Botanic Gardens 730 Great Western Road Glasgow, G12 OUE Scotland, United Kingdom History of Glasgow Botanic Gardens The Botanic Gardens were founded on an 8-acre site at the West End of Sauchiehall Street at Sandyford in 1817. This was through the initiative of Thomas Hopkirk of Dalbeth who gave his own plant collection to form the nucleus of the new garden. It was run by the Royal Botanical Institution of Glasgow and an agreement was reached with Glasgow University to provide facilities for teaching, including supply of plants for botanical and medical classes. Professor William J. Hooker, Regius Professor of Botany at the University of Glasgow (1820-41), took an active part in the development of the Gardens, which became well known in botanical circles throughout the world. The early success led to expansion and the purchase of the present site, at Kelvinside, in 1842. At the time entry was mainly restricted to members of the Royal Botanical Institution and their friends although later the public were admitted on selected days for the princely sum of one penny. The Kibble Palace which houses the national tree fern collection was originally a private conservatory located at Coulport by Loch Long. It was moved to its present site in 1873 and originally used as a concert venue and meeting place, hosting speakers such as Prime Ministers Disraeli and Gladstone. Increasing financial difficulties led to the Gardens being taken over by the then Glasgow Corporation in 1891 on condition they continued as a Botanic Garden and maintained links with the University.
