    ELEVEN YEARS AND ELEVEN REVOLUTIONS AROUND THE SUN. There have been deaths and pregnancies, victories and chance encounters. Too many sombre news bulletins and retrenchment notices. Through it all, earth’s orbit, the night sky and music. In whichever ways, we recount this traversal of elapsing time and we have come far. So too has Ulver. Since the 2007 release of Shadows of the Sun, the Oslo- based collective has busied themselves broadening the grounds of their multi-dimensional, multiconfessional church. Once li- mited to the studio, the indefatigable Norwegians these days command the stage, crossing continents and oceans delivering a surreal and visually transfixing live act. Once described by Kristoffer Rygg, Ulver’s founder, as their “most personal record to date,” first-time Shadows listen- ers will find neither the dance-floor subversives of Julius Cae- sar nor the dense hallucinatory grooves of ATGCLVLSSCAP, recent works that have swelled the ranks and given rise to a handsome new generation of wolf pups. More than a decade on, Ulver’s seventh studio album argu- ably remains their most personal, a decidedly interior account of grand cosmic indifference. This dissertation examines uses of history and expressions of cultural memory in Norwegian black metal. Formed in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Norwegian black metal seemed at odds with many of the stereotypes of Norway. The genre is an extreme style of heavy metal music that has been associated with burning churches, desecrating graves, and committing murders. Yet, Norway is often perceived as wealthy with sublime natural beauty and high levels of equality. Since the late 1990s, Norwegian black metal has increasingly received positive recognition and support from Norwegian government agencies and cultural institutions who have deemed this style of music a cultural product of Norway. In exploring the relationship between Norwegian black metal and Norway, two primary questions are asked: what makes Norwegian black metal ‘Norwegian’ and what are its influences? To answer these questions, a theoretical approach based on Astrid Erll’s cultural memory complex is used.

Olen valinnut materiaaliksi kahden yhtyeen, Burzumin ja Ulverin tekstejä. Burzumin tuotannosta analyysin kohteena on neljän levyn tekstit ja Ulverin tuotannosta kahden. Tutkielman pääpaino on näiden tekstien kuvakielessä. Erittelen tekstien kuvallisia ja runollisia ilmauksia, kuten metaforia, symboleja ja allegorioita. Käsittelen tekstejä kuitenkin myös temaattisesta näkökulmasta. Aiempien tietojeni perusteella tarkastelen tekstien suhdetta folkloreen, pakanallisuuteen sekä kristinuskoon ja sen vastavoimana toimivaan satanismiin. Suurilta osin tutkielmani on perinteistä kuvakielen ja tekstien analyysiä, mutta se esittelee myös akateemisesti suhteellisen tuntematonta musiikin alalajia, norjalaista black metallia. Tekstit ja runot ovat vanha ja suosittu tutkimuskohde akateemisessa maailmassa. Rock-tekstejä on myös tutkittu, mutta black metal -tekstien runoanalyysi on tutkimusaiheena suhteellisen tuntematon.
