This material was invented in the UK in the mid-19th century and is widely used 13 because of its excellent characteristics, such as impact resistance and electrical insulation. Recently 14 the matured vulcanized fiber has been recognized as a renewable and biodegradable material and 15 reevaluated with advanced cellulose nanofiber (CNF) technologies. The microscopic analysis based 16 on the improved freeze-drying method revealed that the vulcanized fiber strength can be attributed 17 to the chemically defibrillated cellulose nanofibers. The architecture is similar to a composite made 18 from the same raw material in which the residual cellulose fibers serve as reinforcement, and the 19 nanofibers serve as adhesives. In this report, we describe the history and structural characteristics of 20 vulcanized fibers and introduce a new aspect in zinc chloride treatment of cellulose.

PAPER AND PAPERBOARD Characteristics, Nomenclature, and Significance of Tests Third Edition 963 Sponsored by dSTM Committee D-6 on Paper and Paper Products Special Technical Publication No. 6o-B (Supersedes S TP No. 60-.4) 04-060020-11 Published by the AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR TESTING AND MATERIALS 1916 Ract St., Philadelphia, Pa., I9xo3 O BY AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR TESTING AND MATERIALS 1963 Library of Congress Catalogue Card Number: 63-21418 Printed in Baltimore, Md. September 1963 September 1972 June 1976 Printed in New Carlisle, Ohio March 1981 FOREWORD The first edition of this monograph was published in 1944 under the edi- torship of the late Roger C. Griffin of Arthur D. Little, Inc., with sixteen au- thors. The second, published in 1951, had as its editor the late Lewis S. Reid of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. with nine collaborators and represented a revision of the first edition. This third edition contains much new material as well as a complete revision of virtually every section. It is believed that it should meet with the wide acceptance of the earlier editions and maintain the aim set forth originally: "to provide an authorita- tive discussion of the characteristics of different types of paper, the signifi- cance of tests applied to them and to nomenclature." It is intended to serve as a source of valuable information to those who may have rather infrequent contact with the paper field or be acquainted with only a small segment of it. Many months of work have gone into the present revision. Sections were assigned to specific individuals who then submitted their work to others for criticism and suggestions.
