How Great Thou Art! Volume XXXVI Number 30 July 31, 2012 A “Note” from the KHCC Music Department How Great Thou Art! Carl Boberg, a twenty six year old Swedish minister wrote a poem in 1885 that he called “O Store Gud”— O Mighty God” The words literally translated to English. said: When I the world consider/Which Thou has made by Thine almighty Word And how the web of life Thou wisdom guideth/And all creation feedeth at Thy board. Then doth my soul burst forth in song of praise/Oh great God, Oh, great God! His poem was published and “forgotten”—or so he thought. Several years later Carl was surprised to hear it being sung to the tune of an old Swedish melody, but the poem and hymn did not achieve widespread fame. Hearing this hymn in Russia, English missionary Stuart Hine was so moved he modified and expanded the words and made his own arrangement of the Swedish melody. He later said his first three verses were inspired, line upon line, by Russia’s rugged Carpathian Mountains. The first verses was composed when he was caught in a thunderstorm in a Carpathian village, the second as he heard the birds sing near the Roma- nian border, and the third as he witnessed many of the Carparthian mountain-dwellers coming to Christ. The final verse was written after Dr Hine returned to Great Britain. Some time later, Dr J Edwin Orr heard “How Great Thou Art” being sung by Naga Tribespeople in Assam, in India, and decided to bring it back to America for use in his own meetings. When he introduced it at a conference in California, it came to the attention of music publisher Tim Spencer, who contacted Mr. Hine and had the song copyrighted. It was published and recorded. During the 1954 Billy Graham Crusade in Harringay Arena, George Beverly Shea was given a leaflet con- taining this hymn. He sang it to himself and shared it with other members of the Graham team. Though not used in London, it was introduced the following year to audiences in Toronto. In the New York Crusade of 1957, it was sung by Bev Shea ninety-nine times, with the choir joining the majestic refrain: Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee, How great thou Art! How great Thou Art! I was privileged to sing in the choir when the Billy Graham crusade came to Shreveport. I love this hymn. Keep watching for another hymn that George Beverly Shea sang; I’d Rather have Jesus. I sincerely hope you are enjoying reading about these hymns. As much as I enjoy playing them! • Tried and True- How Great Thou
1 Upper Path Valley Presbyterian Church November 17, 2019 Tried and True: How Great Thou Art Gary Rebok, UPVPC Commissioned Lay Pastor As we come to the conclusion of this sermon series “Tried and True,” we can often find that the foundation of our faith has roots in the generations that have come before us. Some of the hymns we sing have been born out of a tragedy that initiated a longing for God’s presence to comfort a loss or catastrophe. But as said before, these hymns have been tried theologically, bringing important biblical truths to our hearts, minds, and spirits that bring about memories leading to our faith. Let’s pray: Heavenly Father, thank you for those who have come before us to bring about the words of faith inspired by and through your Holy Spirit. We ask you, Father, to raise a new generation of Christians who will delight in the Word like King David, effective and fruitful in ministry so that the knowledge of You will spread to the generations we will never know. May the words of my mouth and the meditation of all our hearts dwell richly in us this day. Amen In choosing the hymn “How Great Thou Art,” I look back to my family tradition around the table and how the foundation of my faith has emerged from a previous generation. Shortly after being called into my first ministry position, my mother paid a visit to my office with a package. She said, I brought you something for your office wall, and as I unraveled the paper from it, I uncovered a picture, something for my wall, “she said,” a picture of a guitar and the words to “How Great Thou Art.” My mother knew a bit about the history behind the song and what a treasure it meant to the family’s spiritual foundation, eventually leading me to follow God’s calling.

  • Journal Living God’S Word Daily Ord Daily
The July 2015 Good News Journal Living God’s Word Daily ord Daily The Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, I was asked to perform a funeral for a non-member. It turned out to be a memo- rable occasion because of a little boy–the deceased’s grandson. When I arrived, I noticed the tyke sitting looking at a smart phone and making all sorts of comments. He was not control- ling the volume of his voice, and he kept talking and talking and talking. One could not help but wonder what was going on. As the service started and I began speaking and welcoming those gathered, the boy continued his verbal tirades. Mom got up and took him out. You could hear him talking from the other room. Another elderly woman (the other grandparent perhaps?) took her turn. Then it was dad’s turn. At one point, the boy escaped his watch and ran straight up to the casket. There was a part of me that wondered what was going on. Was there a need for discipline? Part of me asked that question. It was a rush to judgment. At the end of the service, the boy and his family approached the casket. “Grandma!” the little guy yelled out. “Grandma! Hi, Grandma!” “Daddy, is grandma going to wake up?” “Grandma’s sleeping. Shh!” “Not the way I usually handle death with kids,” I thought to myself. Another rush to judg- ment. Yet, there was also something nagging telling me that although this kid, for all practical purposes, looked normal, there was something more.
