Journal Living God’S Word Daily Ord Daily The July 2015 Good News Journal Living God’s Word Daily ord Daily The Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, I was asked to perform a funeral for a non-member. It turned out to be a memo- rable occasion because of a little boy–the deceased’s grandson. When I arrived, I noticed the tyke sitting looking at a smart phone and making all sorts of comments. He was not control- ling the volume of his voice, and he kept talking and talking and talking. One could not help but wonder what was going on. As the service started and I began speaking and welcoming those gathered, the boy continued his verbal tirades. Mom got up and took him out. You could hear him talking from the other room. Another elderly woman (the other grandparent perhaps?) took her turn. Then it was dad’s turn. At one point, the boy escaped his watch and ran straight up to the casket. There was a part of me that wondered what was going on. Was there a need for discipline? Part of me asked that question. It was a rush to judgment. At the end of the service, the boy and his family approached the casket. “Grandma!” the little guy yelled out. “Grandma! Hi, Grandma!” “Daddy, is grandma going to wake up?” “Grandma’s sleeping. Shh!” “Not the way I usually handle death with kids,” I thought to myself. Another rush to judg- ment. Yet, there was also something nagging telling me that although this kid, for all practical purposes, looked normal, there was something more. After grave-side services were over, I approached the father. “You know, you may have a preacher there on your hands.” “He’s autistic.” And there it was. “He’s very verbal.” I exchanged a few more words with him, but deep underneath, I was wondering. If this couple with this boy showed up in the midst of worship on a Sunday morning; if they were complete strangers and no one knew them; if everyone just looked at this boy and his seeming “normalness” and were subjected to his verbal cries and “inappropriate” behavior, what would happen? What kind of welcome would they receive? As I talked to the father of this boy, I could sense the strain deep within him. I could sense the toll it was taking to care for this son of his–a son he deeply loved. Would we rush to judgment? Would we add insult to injury to this family who was trying to work with a son who suffered from disability? I’ve been to more than a few churches in my day. I cannot remember very many of those churches where kids with such disabilities were noticeable. In fact, in many of these places, they were absent. And yet, don’t they have a place at God’s table? Wouldn’t Jesus be telling his disciples, “Back off! Let the little guys come unto me, for to such as these belong the kingdom of God.”? There is no doubt in my mind the answer is yes. I understand that such a thing would cause major distraction. I understand that it might spoil the “worshipful” attitude many of us try to assume when we gather. Hey, it distracted from my sermon. I get that. I don’t like it, but I am wondering what is more important. If Jesus welcomed us when we were imperfect; if Jesus died for us when we were still sinners; if Jesus sacrificed Himself for our benefit, and our hearts are changed by that, is it possible for us to welcome others in their imperfections, when they distract us, when they prevent us from obtaining a worshipful attitude? It is possible for us to refrain from judgment and provide a space for even the least of these–and those who struggle to care for them–to be welcome and accepted just like we were welcomed and accepted? As a congregation, we have not experienced such a thing, yet. But if it were to occur, I hope that we may graciously extend a hand of healing and hope to those who truly need it most. ~Pastor Haug St. John Lutheran Church of Cat Spring ~ 480 Ross Street ~ Cat Spring, Texas 78933 Pastor Kevin Haug ~ Cell (979) 733-6086 Home (979) 865-3842 ~ [email protected] Office Hours: Monday thru Thursday 8:00 am to 1:00 pm ~ (979) 865-5444 Choir Director Janice Whitehead ~ [email protected] ~ Youth Director Christa Klar ~ [email protected] Secretary Sam Waxler [email protected] St. John Lutheran Church Council Meeting Minutes from June 15, 2015 The meeting was called to order by John Simpson at 6:27 p.m. Pastor Haug opened the meeting with a prayer. I awoke Wednesday morning to read a social-media post from my younger brother informing me that Billy Graham had passed away. Even though I knew Dr. Graham was approaching 100, it was still surreal to see the scores of news’ feeds declaring that he indeed had passed sometime during the night at his home in Montreat, NC. Since Wednesday morning, I have read and watched several tributes about Dr. Graham’s life and ministry. I remember fondly watching him preach on my parent’s television in our living room when I was just a child. As a child, I was captivated by his voice and his passionate preaching of the pure Gospel of sin, God’s love, the cross of Christ, and our need to turn to Christ for forgiveness of our sins. In fact, when I entered The Southern Baptist Seminary in the fall of 1997, I chose to enter their Billy Graham School of Evangelism, Missions and Church Growth because of my love for Dr. Graham and Travis Fleming evangelism. I would suggest that besides Billy Graham, no one since the Apostle Paul has preached the Gospel with such power, boldness and love. Senior Pastor I am sure many of you probably saw him in a crusade at some point.

  • “Joy in Contentment”
Series: Joy for the Journey “Joy in Contentment” Philippians 4:10-13 As we open God’s Word today, we are in the home stretch in our series “Joy for the Journey.” Throughout this study we have repeatedly seen how to have joy even though life is a journey filled with many ups and downs at every turn along the way. When reading the book of Philippians, one would assume that Paul must have been living the life and enjoying all that was going on, but the truth is that Paul was facing great hardship. He had been imprisoned for preaching the Gospel and was awaiting trial. As he penned the words, he was chained to a Roman guard and most of his freedoms were gone. He didn’t know when his circumstance would end, if this would lead to him being acquitted or beheaded. However, Paul was not defeated or discouraged. Even in suffering Paul was able to look to the Lord and rejoice in Him. Paul knew Jesus and trusted God’s plan for his life. So, day by day, moment by moment, and verse by verse, Paul lived with joy and encourages us to do the same. Throughout our study we have seen many ways that we have joy in Christ, but today we come to one of the ways that seems foreign to many of us. What God calls us to in this passage is a great challenge for us today – Contentment. Let me ask you this morning, “Are you content?” The word “content” means to be “satisfied, pleased, happy.” Far too often in our culture and in the church, we are a discontented people.

  • Remarks August 2020 St
ReMarks August 2020 St. Mark's Lutheran Church “So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!” (2 Corinthians 5:17). The Pastor's Pen Dear Friends in Christ, This year has been one of the most challenging years most of us have ever experienced. Due to the unforeseen COVID-19 global pandemic, many things have been changed or put on hold. Doing things in new ways has often felt like forcing square pegs into round holes. In addition to medical and health related challenges, the tragic killings of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd brought unresolved issues of systemic racism in this nation into greater public focus through ongoing debate and protest. A global pandemic and the lingering illness of systemic racism have challenged this nation in sustained ways that have not been experienced in decades. These two issues reveal weaknesses of the human body and the human heart, weaknesses that are both physical and spiritual. In our hurry to “get back to normal” it is my prayer that we look more deeply inside ourselves and learn from these challenges, realizing that only through renewed unity as one human family can we create a more just world. Only by pursuing solutions together as human beings, to a pandemic and to racism, can we become more aware of our shared humanity and shared need for one another. God created human beings in God’s own image, meaning we each bear the image of the Creator in ourselves and in one another.

  • History of Hymns: "How Great Thou Art" by C
History of Hymns: "How Great Thou Art" by C. Michael Hawn How Great Thou Art Carl Boberg by Stuart K. Hine The United Methodist Hymnal, No. 77 As Carlton Young was preparing The United Methodist Hymnal, a United Methodist Reporter poll revealed that “How Great Thou Art” headed the list of hymns that should be retained in the then-forthcoming 1989 hymnal. As the poll was published, John A. Lovelace, Reporter editor emeritus, wrote, “What no previous survey had found, though, is that ‘How Great Thou Art’ may also be United Methodism's least-liked hymn” (The United Methodist Reporter, August 23, 1985). Earlier, when the hymn was reluctantly included in the 1966 Methodist Hymnal (as most-requested hymn), Dr. Young notes that many complained that “the church’s official hymnal would bring respectability to the theme song of the Billy Graham Crusades . .. Others brought equally uninformed and unfair criticism on the Methodist Publishing House for presumably dictating editorial policy and cheapening the church’s official hymnal” (Young, 1993, 409). Many who fervently sing this hymn throughout the world each Sunday in myriad translations have no idea of the polarity of feeling that exists around it. Perhaps both sides would benefit from some historical perspective. The origins of this hymn may be found with Swedish pastor Carl Boberg around 1886. Boberg (1859-1940) was a leading evangelist of his day and the editor of an influential Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden periodical Sanningsvittnet (“Witness of the Truth”). Boberg served in the Swe•dish par•lia•ment and published several volumes of poetry, including hymns.
