Washington, Booker T 1856-1915 US African-American ex-slave and educator. He opened Tuskegee Institute, in Tuskegee, Alabama, in 1881 to provide adequate education for African-Americans. His autobiography “Up from slavery”, published in 1901, is included by W J and R Petersen in their book “100 Christian books that changed the century”. He learned “how to use and love the Bible”. Washington is quoted as saying, “The great ambition of the older people was to try to read the Bible before they died” and “I always make it a rule to read a chapter or a portion of the chapter in the morning, before beginning the work of the day”.
