  • Journal Living God’S Word Daily Ord Daily
The July 2015 Good News Journal Living God’s Word Daily ord Daily The Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, I was asked to perform a funeral for a non-member. It turned out to be a memo- rable occasion because of a little boy–the deceased’s grandson. When I arrived, I noticed the tyke sitting looking at a smart phone and making all sorts of comments. He was not control- ling the volume of his voice, and he kept talking and talking and talking. One could not help but wonder what was going on. As the service started and I began speaking and welcoming those gathered, the boy continued his verbal tirades. Mom got up and took him out. You could hear him talking from the other room. Another elderly woman (the other grandparent perhaps?) took her turn. Then it was dad’s turn. At one point, the boy escaped his watch and ran straight up to the casket. There was a part of me that wondered what was going on. Was there a need for discipline? Part of me asked that question. It was a rush to judgment. At the end of the service, the boy and his family approached the casket. “Grandma!” the little guy yelled out. “Grandma! Hi, Grandma!” “Daddy, is grandma going to wake up?” “Grandma’s sleeping. Shh!” “Not the way I usually handle death with kids,” I thought to myself. Another rush to judg- ment. Yet, there was also something nagging telling me that although this kid, for all practical purposes, looked normal, there was something more.

I awoke Wednesday morning to read a social-media post from my younger brother informing me that Billy Graham had passed away. Even though I knew Dr. Graham was approaching 100, it was still surreal to see the scores of news’ feeds declaring that he indeed had passed sometime during the night at his home in Montreat, NC. Since Wednesday morning, I have read and watched several tributes about Dr. Graham’s life and ministry. I remember fondly watching him preach on my parent’s television in our living room when I was just a child. As a child, I was captivated by his voice and his passionate preaching of the pure Gospel of sin, God’s love, the cross of Christ, and our need to turn to Christ for forgiveness of our sins. In fact, when I entered The Southern Baptist Seminary in the fall of 1997, I chose to enter their Billy Graham School of Evangelism, Missions and Church Growth because of my love for Dr. Graham and Travis Fleming evangelism. I would suggest that besides Billy Graham, no one since the Apostle Paul has preached the Gospel with such power, boldness and love. Senior Pastor I am sure many of you probably saw him in a crusade at some point.

  • “Joy in Contentment”
Series: Joy for the Journey “Joy in Contentment” Philippians 4:10-13 As we open God’s Word today, we are in the home stretch in our series “Joy for the Journey.” Throughout this study we have repeatedly seen how to have joy even though life is a journey filled with many ups and downs at every turn along the way. When reading the book of Philippians, one would assume that Paul must have been living the life and enjoying all that was going on, but the truth is that Paul was facing great hardship. He had been imprisoned for preaching the Gospel and was awaiting trial. As he penned the words, he was chained to a Roman guard and most of his freedoms were gone. He didn’t know when his circumstance would end, if this would lead to him being acquitted or beheaded. However, Paul was not defeated or discouraged. Even in suffering Paul was able to look to the Lord and rejoice in Him. Paul knew Jesus and trusted God’s plan for his life. So, day by day, moment by moment, and verse by verse, Paul lived with joy and encourages us to do the same. Throughout our study we have seen many ways that we have joy in Christ, but today we come to one of the ways that seems foreign to many of us. What God calls us to in this passage is a great challenge for us today – Contentment. Let me ask you this morning, “Are you content?” The word “content” means to be “satisfied, pleased, happy.” Far too often in our culture and in the church, we are a discontented people.

  • Remarks August 2020 St
ReMarks August 2020 St. Mark's Lutheran Church “So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!” (2 Corinthians 5:17). The Pastor's Pen Dear Friends in Christ, This year has been one of the most challenging years most of us have ever experienced. Due to the unforeseen COVID-19 global pandemic, many things have been changed or put on hold. Doing things in new ways has often felt like forcing square pegs into round holes. In addition to medical and health related challenges, the tragic killings of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd brought unresolved issues of systemic racism in this nation into greater public focus through ongoing debate and protest. A global pandemic and the lingering illness of systemic racism have challenged this nation in sustained ways that have not been experienced in decades. These two issues reveal weaknesses of the human body and the human heart, weaknesses that are both physical and spiritual. In our hurry to “get back to normal” it is my prayer that we look more deeply inside ourselves and learn from these challenges, realizing that only through renewed unity as one human family can we create a more just world. Only by pursuing solutions together as human beings, to a pandemic and to racism, can we become more aware of our shared humanity and shared need for one another. God created human beings in God’s own image, meaning we each bear the image of the Creator in ourselves and in one another.
