CI Financial, Toronto 2 CI Financial, Toronto 2 Govan Brown is a construction management company headquartered in Toronto that specializes in interiors for high-profile corporate and commercial clients across Canada. The company has completed millions of square feet of interior projects from its offices in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary and Ottawa. Business in Focus spoke with Jon Taylor, senior partner in the company, to learn more. Cactus Club, Edmonton Written by Mark Golombek tarted by Ralph Govan and John Brown, Govan Brown Jon explains that when it comes to future growth, the has been doing business for over twenty years. This also leads to Indeed, Govan Brown occupies a unique greater purchasing power; says Jon, “We “We do a lot of large upscale retail orga- position in the Canadian marketplace. Buying efficiently translates into able to grow that part of our business when dealing with clients who have lower costs for our clients, ultimately.” 4 Govan Brown purchased a state of the art building in Toronto to house its largest operating company. Jon describes it as a “really hip, converted metal stamping factory. It will attract industry leaders and young construction professionals to the Govan Brown family because it is a great place to work.” The space boasts great work/life balance with its own gym, outdoor space, free parking and a “funky office environment.” Holt Renfrew, Toronto Another selling point for people who may want to work with Govan Brown is that the company allows the possibility of moving to other offices within its network. There is a lot of potential for advancement within the organization or switch to other operations within the company family. Another competitive advantage, as Jon explains is that, “We have tremendous capacity and capability in terms of budgeting and estimating – not just in terms of personnel, but in terms of data and history of data when it comes to what it costs to build across the country – in terms of value engineering, which I prefer to call value enhancement.” Value enhancement is simply another way of looking to get more for less. Govan Brown employs a lot of architects and engineers who look for creative ways to help Holt Renfrew, Toronto clients and design partners and consultants who look for better and more cost efficient ways to build projects. The company strives to ensure that it can replicate what has made the company great at its home base and ensure that this translates to the regional offices. Govan Brown recently hired a Senior Vice President of Corporate Development to ensure consistency and continuity with the Govan Brown brand throughout all offices. “That doesn’t mean to say that it has to be a cookie cutter, but that it needs to have a consistency across the entire platform.” One of the main challenges that the company faces is dealing with the speed of growth. Growth requires bringing in the right type of people who have a good cultural fit within the organiza- CI Financial, Toronto tion; people who buy into the Govan Brown way of doing things. The company spends a lot of time interviewing and being very selective with whom it brings in to be a part of the team. As Jon puts it, “It’s not a robust economy, but it’s not dead either. Depending on what you read or see, your opinion can change on a daily basis, but finding good people in our industry is a real challenge along with keeping them. It is far more important for us to keep good people for a productive, exciting workplace.” “It is important for us to keep good people for a productive, exciting workplace.” CI Financial, Toronto BUSINESS IN FOCUS 5 “The company is the only interiors firm that operates on a national basis.” Currently, Govan Brown is in discussions to expand into Halifax. It does have some work there for some of its national clients, so this would be the next logical step. “The overall objective is to have a permanent national presence so we will be setting up a new office in Halifax early in the new year. Jon likes to think about expansion as an ‘NHL strategy’. The company wants to have an office in every city where there is an NHL team, and he is hoping that Halifax gets one soon. Con- struction is all about local hands on site. A project can’t be run from Toronto if it is in Red Deer; it has to be managed in Red Deer; that’s part of the Govan Brown way of doing things. Govan Brown-Partners Competition within the interiors industry is a difficult hurdle to get over. It is a highly competitive market with many small and medium sized local and regional players. Govan Brown is not necessarily the cheapest provider, so it competes by promoting its depth of resources, expertise, the talents of its team, and delivering high quality products to its clients. Govan Brown is an award winning company in the use of integrated project management accounting software for the tracking and monitoring of projects and there have been awards aplenty doled out for its interiors work. It has been part of Canada’s Best Managed Companies for over six consecutive years; it was the Canadian Business Journal’s Company of the Fasken Martineau, Calgary Year in 2010; and in October of this year, it won its second Con- structech Vision Award for the team’s continued use of inno- vative, industry-leading technology. Govan Brown is also very much involved in the communities in which it works, winning the Corporate Commitment award for Leaders for the Cure in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. “We are living and working in communities, so we need to support them. We were recognized for our long-term com- mitment to Queen Victoria Public School, an inner city school, for various programs that we run, including a breakfast initia- tive where our staff volunteer to cook and serve breakfast to Gluskin Sheff Maris Mezulis Photography students every month. This is important to us because, working in a fast paced environment like ours, we can provide people with the added benefit of giving back to the community and participating in things that really make them feel good about our business and what we are doing for the community.” Jon says that, ultimately, the company’s business is all about people. “Govan Brown is blessed with well trained, committed, thoughtful, honest, safety conscious people. That’s what makes our business and that is the biggest value here!” Gluskin Sheff Maris Mezulis Photography Govan Brown 108 Vine Avenue Toronto, ON M5V 3B1 P: 416-703-5100 F: 416-703-5200 E: [email protected] www.govanbrown.com CI Financial, Toronto Unit 210, 1310 Hollis Street, Halifax NS B3J 3P3, Canada | Phone: 1-888-477-2938 Ext. 206.

NEWSLETTER The Town of York Historical Society ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ September 2012 Vol. XXVIII No. 3 This year Canadians celebrate a number of CANADIAN RETAILER anniversaries. 50 years ago medicare was introduced CELEBRATES 175 YEARS in Saskatchewan; 100 years ago the Grey Cup and the Calgary Stampede were inaugurated; 200 years ago the Americans declared war on Britain and invaded her territories in Upper and Lower Canada. At the time, many “Canadians” and First Nations joined in their defence. 25 years later, rebellions took place in both Canadas against the same British rule that had been fought for previously. Also in 1837, a new monarch ascended to the throne – the young Victoria – who would rule Britannia and Canada for more than 60 years. In the year of our current Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, we recognize the 175th anniversary of a Canadian retailer who, during Queen Victoria’s reign, became furrier to generations of British royalty. In 1947, Holt Renfrew & Co. was chosen by the Canadian government to design a wedding present for Princess Elizabeth. It was a coat of wild Labrador mink. Many North American women owned furs at the time, but the harsh realities of post-war Britain are evident in the photograph at left in which one man, fists clenched, has not doffed his hat. • 354 PORTAGE AVENUE – CARLTON BUILDING (HOLT RENFREW BUILDING) John D
354 PORTAGE AVENUE – CARLTON BUILDING (HOLT RENFREW BUILDING) John D. Atchison, 1912 Winnipeg’s development boom of 1881-82 brought about the quick rise and demise of many real estate agents. But it also provided a base upon which others, such as British immigrant John Henry Oldfield, were able to establish long-standing careers. Oldfield (1857-1924) began working as a local realtor in 1881. He subsequently (1899) formed a partnership with William Hicks Gardner (1873-1951), another British transplant. Insurance agent Walter T. Kirby (1858-c.1950) joined the firm in 1906. Oldfield, Kirby and Gardner Ltd. went on to function for many decades across the Canadian Northwest as a real estate broker, property manager, insurance agent, mortgage lender, and investment dealer. Among its local activities, the company helped shape Portage Avenue as a major commercial district in the early 1900s. It built its own head office at 234 Portage in 1909, followed by a mixed-use revenue property, the Carlton Building at the southeast corner of Portage and Carlton Street, in 1912. City of Winnipeg 2002 Both were designed by architect John D. Atchison (1870-1959), an Illinois native who trained and worked in Chicago before opening his Winnipeg office. From 1905 until he moved to California in 1923, Atchison produced an extensive portfolio of commercial, residential and institutional structures. Among his surviving projects are the Hample, Kennedy, Boyd and Curry buildings on Portage Avenue, and the Canada Permanent, Maltese Cross, Great-West Life, Cadomin, Union Tower and Bank of Hamilton buildings elsewhere in the downtown. The three-storey Carlton Building is a low-profile version of the Chicago Style of architecture, with detailing that reflects an Italianate influence.

The News and Intelligence You Need on Luxury LUXURY MEMO SPECIAL REPORTS Future of the department store: Luxury Memo special report December 14, 2017 What is in store for department stores? Image credit: Neiman Marcus By SARAH JONES Luxury department stores are facing pressure from changing consumer behavior and preferences, forcing them to evolve to remain competitive. In recent years, department stores have struggled to retain consistent growth in a challenging retail environment fraught with increased competition and lowered consumer demand. Given the challenges that these multi-brand retailers have faced as of late, does the luxury department store have a future? "I should say, 'Of course,' but if we look at the history of department stores, so, so many of the greatest are just memories, like Marshall Fields and Wanamaker's," said Pam Danziger, president of Unity Marketing, Stevens, PA. "When Macy's/Federated bought up all those regional department stores, I thought it a mistake to try to rebrand them from local to a national entity under Macy's," she said. "For a while, it worked, but today, Macy's is in a bad place that I think could have been avoided if each individual, regional, local department store with roots in their own community had been able to gain the benefits of big company ownership, but would have been able to continue to operate as individual retailers grounded in their local communities. "The same thinking goes for the luxe department store. Each individual store needs to be fully integrated into its local community, not part of some national corporation with a national identity to maintain.
