Announcements

Welcome! Welcome to all friends and family worshipping online with us today. We hope you will join us again as we worship God together virtually through these trying times. Today is the First Sunday after the Epiphany, the Baptism of Our Lord. Today we remember the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River by St. , who was Our Lord’s cousin, but more significantly, “Forerunner,” preparing the way for His coming. Parents, a Sunday School lesson for children is available on our Facebook page today. The video has already been recorded, so you can watch it any time.

COVID-19 Update We have now passed the 30-day mark since Bp. Lee suspended in-person worship in the Diocese of Chicago. However, the Diocese has announced that the suspension will remain in effect in all regions that are designated for Tier 3 Mitigation. At this time, that is still the case in the City of Chicago (Region 11), and as a result we will continue to have no public services until further notice. Please visit www.stpaulsbythelake.org/covid19-updates for more information. During this period of suspension, I would commend to you the following ways to maintain habits of regular worship and prayer: • We will continue to live-stream Mass at 10:30 am on Sundays from our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/StPaulsChurchByTheLake. While this is not the same as attending church, I highly recommend that you watch as part of your Sunday routine. • If you would like to receive Holy Communion, I am more than happy to bring the Reserved Sacrament to your home upon request. Call me at 614-314-1475 to schedule a visit. I am also glad to schedule a visit to administer Holy Unction or hear Confessions as needed. • Resources for home worship for personal, family, or small group use can be found on our website at www.stpaulsbythelake.org/home-worship-resources. • Remember to pray for a speedy end to this pandemic, for all those suffering from COVID-19, for medical workers, and for those facing isolation.

1 Pledge Cards – Virtual Pledge Cards Now Available Thank you to all who have made their 2021 pledge. Please mail back your pledge card a soon as possible, and contact the church office if you did not receive a pledge card. We now also have an online pledge card on our website at www.stpaulsbythelake.org/stewardship-2021. We are aware that these are difficult times financially for many. Pledging is a decision between you and God, and one that should be made after prayerful discernment. Yet, it is also a sign of your faith in God in showing where you put your trust, and any pledge, no matter the amount, is a sign of this faith. This year, if you submit a pledge card, you will receive a complimentary copy of the Church Ordo Calendar for 2021.

Prelude Organ Opening Prelude

Introit Cantor On a throne exalted I beheld, and lo, a man sitting, whom a legion of angels worship, singing together: behold, his rule and governance endureth to all ages. O be joyful in God, all ye lands: serve the LORD with gladness. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

Salutation, Collect for Purity, and Summary of the Law Celebrant Blessed be God, X Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. All And blessed be his Kingdom, now and forever. Amen. Celebrant Almighty God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. All Amen. Celebrant Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ saith: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.

Kyrie Eleison Celebrant Lord, have mercy upon us. All Christ, have mercy upon us. Celebrant Lord, have mercy upon us.

Gloria All Glory be to God on high, and on earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us.

4 Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Collect of the Day Celebrant The Lord be with you. All And with thy spirit. Celebrant Let us pray. Father in heaven, who at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan didst proclaim him thy beloved Son and anoint him with the Holy Spirit: Grant that all who are baptized into his Name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confess him as Lord and Savior; who with thee and the same Spirit liveth and reigneth, one God, in glory everlasting. All Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word

First Reading Genesis 1:1-5 Lector A reading from the book of Genesis. In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. Lector The Word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 29 Lector That portion of the psalter appointed for the gradual today is Psalm 29. Ascribe to the LORD, you gods, * ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his Name; * worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness. The voice of the LORD is upon the waters; the God of glory thunders; * the LORD is upon the mighty waters. The voice of the LORD is a powerful voice; * the voice of the LORD is a voice of splendor. The voice of the LORD breaks the cedar trees; * the LORD breaks the cedars of Lebanon; He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, * and Mount Hermon like a young wild ox.

5 The voice of the LORD splits the flames of fire; the voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness; * the LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. The voice of the LORD makes the oak trees writhe * and strips the forests bare. And in the temple of the LORD * all are crying, “Glory!” The LORD sits enthroned above the flood; * the LORD sits enthroned as King for evermore. The LORD shall give strength to his people; * the LORD shall give his people the blessing of peace.

Second Reading Acts 19:1-7 Lector A reading from the Acts of the Apostles While was in Corinth, Paul passed through the interior regions and came to Ephesus, where he found some disciples. He said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?” They replied, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” Then he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” They answered, “Into John’s baptism.” Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus.” On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied—altogether there were about twelve of them. Lector The Word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God. Gradual and Alleluia Chants Cantor Blessed be the LORD, even the God of Israel: which only doeth wondrous things. The mountains also shall bring peace: and the little hills righteousness unto the people. Alleluia. Alleluia. O be joyful in the LORD, all ye lands: serve the LORD with gladness. Alleluia.

The Holy Gospel Mark 1:4-11 Celebrant The Lord be with you. All And with thy spirit. Celebrant X The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. All Glory be to thee, O Lord. Celebrant John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed, “The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.” Celebrant The Gospel of the Lord. All Praise be to thee, O Christ.

The Homily Fr. Steele, honorary assisting priest 6 The Nicene Creed All I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible; And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father; by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; he suffered and was buried; and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father; and he shall come again, with glory, to judge both the quick and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Ghost the Lord, and Giver of Life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified; who spake by the Prophets. And I believe one holy Catholic and Apostolic Church; I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins; and I look for X the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the People Celebrant Let us pray for the whole of Christ’s Church and the world. Almighty and everliving God, who in thy holy Word hast taught us to make prayers, and supplications, and to give thanks for all men: Receive these our prayers which we offer unto thy divine Majesty, beseeching thee to inspire continually the Universal Church with the spirit of truth, unity, and concord; and grant that all those who do confess thy holy Name may agree in the truth of thy holy Word, and live in unity and godly love. Give grace, O heavenly Father, to all and other ministers, especially Justin the Archbishop of Canterbury, our presiding , and all other bishops, priests, and deacons who have asked our prayers, that they may, both by their life and doctrine, set forth thy true and lively Word, and rightly and duly administer thy holy Sacraments. And to all thy people give thy heavenly grace, and especially to this congregation here present; that, with meek heart and due reverence, they may hear and receive thy holy Word, truly serving thee in holiness and righteousness all the days of their life; [remembering those celebrating birthdays … and those celebrating their wedding anniversaries…] and for those who have asked our special intentions. We beseech thee also so to rule the hearts of those who bear the authority of government in this and every land, especially remembering Donald our president, Jay our governor, Lori our mayor, and those who serve in the armed forces from our parish, that they may be led to wise decisions and right actions for the welfare and peace of the world.

7 Open, O Lord, the eyes of all people to behold thy gracious hand in all thy works, that, rejoicing in thy whole creation, they may honor thee with their substance, and be faithful stewards of thy bounty. And we most humbly beseech thee, of thy goodness, O Lord, to comfort and succor … all those who in this transitory life are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity. And we also X bless thy holy Name for all thy servants departed this life in thy faith and fear, [especially remembering …] beseeching thee to grant them continual growth in thy love and service; and to grant us grace so to follow the good examples of the ever-blessed Virgin Mary, blessed Apostle Paul our patron, and of all thy , that with them we may be partakers of thy heavenly kingdom. Grant these our prayers, O Father, for Jesus Christ’s sake, our only Mediator and Advocate. All Amen.

Confession Celebrant Ye who do truly and earnestly repent you of your sins, and are in love and charity with your neighbors, and intend to lead a new life, following the commandments of God, and walking from henceforth in his holy ways; Draw near with faith, and make your humble confession to Almighty God, devoutly kneeling. All Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all men: We acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we from time to time most grievously have committed, by thought, word, and deed, against thy divine Majesty, provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them is grievous unto us, the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honor and glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Absolution and Comfortable Words Celebrant Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him, have mercy upon you, X pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. All Amen. Celebrant Hear the Word of God to all who truly turn to him. “Come unto me, all ye that travail and are heavy laden, and I will refresh you.” (Matthew 11:28) “God so loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, to the end that all that believe in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16) “This is a true saying, and worthy of all men to be received, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.” (1 Timothy 1:15) “If any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and he is the perfect offering for our sins, and not for ours only, but for the sins of the whole world.” (1 John 2:1-2)

The Liturgy of the Sacrament

Offertory Cantor O be joyful in the LORD, all ye lands; serve the LORD with gladness, and come before his presence with a song: be ye sure that the LORD he is God. All Offertory Hymn: “When Jesus Came to Jordan” Fred Pratt Green 1 When Jesus came to Jordan to be baptized by John, he did not come for pardon but as the Sinless One. He came to share repentance with all who mourn their sins, to speak the vital sentence with which good news begins. 2 He came to share temptation, our utmost woe and loss, for us and our salvation to die upon the cross. So when the dove descended on him, the Son of Man, the hidden years had ended, the age of grace began. 3 Come, Holy Spirit, aid us to keep the vows we make; this very day invade us, and ev’ry bondage break. Come, give our lives direction, the gift we covet most: to share the resurrection that leads to Pentecost.

All May the Lord accept this sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his Name, for our good, and the good of all his holy Church. Celebrant Mass Intentions … X Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord. All And may light perpetual shine upon them. Celebrant May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. All Amen.

Sursum Corda Celebrant The Lord be with you. All And with thy spirit. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. All We lift them up unto the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks unto our Lord God. All It is meet and right so to do. Celebrant It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, Holy Father, Almighty, Everlasting God. Because in the mystery of the Word made flesh, thou hast caused a new light to shine in our hearts, to give the knowledge of thy glory in the face of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

9 Sanctus and Benedictus Celebrant Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and saying, All Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts: Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee, O Lord Most High. Blessed is he that cometh in the Name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Canon of the Mass Celebrant All glory be to thee, Almighty God, our heavenly Father, for that thou, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again. For in the night in which he was betrayed, he took bread; and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my Body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” X Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink ye all of this; for this is my Blood of the New Testament, which is shed for you, and for many, for the remission of sins; Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” X Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, according to the institution of thy dearly beloved Son our Savior Jesus Christ, we, thy humble servants, do celebrate and make here before thy divine Majesty, with these thy holy gifts, which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; rendering unto thee most hearty thanks for the innumerable benefits procured unto us by the same. And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us; and, of thy almighty goodness, vouchsafe to bless and sanctify, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, these thy gifts and creatures of bread and wine; that we, receiving them according to thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed Body and Blood. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness, mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; most humbly beseeching thee to grant that, by the merits and death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in his blood, we, and all thy whole Church, may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion. And here we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, our selves, our souls and bodies, to be a reasonable, holy, and living sacrifice unto thee; humbly beseeching thee, that we, and all others who shall be partakers of this Holy Communion, may worthily receive the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, be filled with thy grace and heavenly X benediction, and made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him. And although we are unworthy, through our manifold sins, to offer unto thee any sacrifice; yet we beseech thee to accept this our bounden duty and service; not weighing our merits, but pardoning our offenses, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, all honor and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. All Amen.

We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord whose property is always to have mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen. Celebrant The gifts of God for the people of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

Communion Cantor Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? Behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing: And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? Wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business? Choir Communion Anthem: “Lord, Whose Love In Humble Service” Albert F. Bayly 1 Lord, whose love in humble service bore the weight of human need, Who upon the cross, forsaken, offered mercy’s perfect deed: We, your servants, bring the worship not of voice alone, but heart, Consecrating to your purpose every gift that you impart. 2 Still your children wander homeless; still the hungry cry for bread; Still the captives long for freedom; still in grief we mourn our dead. As, O Lord, your deep compassion healed the sick and freed the soul, Use the love your Spirit kindles still to save and make us whole.
