Lesser Feasts and Fasts 2018 Conforming to General Convention 2018 1 Preface Christians have since ancient times honored men and women whose lives represent heroic commitment to Christ and who have borne witness to their faith even at the cost of their lives. Such witnesses, by the grace of God, live in every age. The criteria used in the selection of those to be commemorated in the Episcopal Church are set out below and represent a growing consensus among provinces of the Anglican Communion also engaged in enriching their calendars. What we celebrate in the lives of the saints is the presence of Christ expressing itself in and through particular lives lived in the midst of specific historical circumstances. In the saints we are not dealing primarily with absolutes of perfection but human lives, in all their diversity, open to the motions of the Holy Spirit. Many a holy life, when carefully examined, will reveal flaws or the bias of a particular moment in history or ecclesial perspective. It should encourage us to realize that the saints, like us, are first and foremost redeemed sinners in whom the risen Christ’s words to St. Paul come to fulfillment, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” The “lesser feasts” provide opportunities for optional observance. They are not intended to replace the fundamental celebration of Sunday and major Holy Days. As the Standing Liturgical Commission and the General Convention add or delete names from the calendar, successive editions of this volume will be published, each edition bearing in the title the date of the General Convention to which it is a response. -

Goldfrank This essay originated at the time that ASEC was in its early stages and in response to a requestthat I write something aboutthe church Fathers in medieval Rus'. I already knew finding the patrology concerning just the original Greek and Syriac texts is nothing short of a researcher’s black hole. Frazel, Ph.D AN ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the role of Gregory I (r. 590-604 CE) in developing permanent ecclesiastical institutions under the authority of the Bishop of Rome to feed and serve the poor and the socio-political world in which he did so. Gregory’s work was part culmination of pre-existing practice, part innovation. I contend that Gregory transformed fading, ancient institutions and ideas—the Imperial annona, the monastic soup kitchen-hospice or xenodochium, Christianity’s “collection for the saints,” Christian caritas more generally and Greco-Roman euergetism—into something distinctly ecclesiastical, indeed “papal.” Although Gregory has long been closely associated with charity, few have attempted to unpack in any systematic way what Gregorian charity might have looked like in practical application and what impact it had on the Roman Church and the Roman people. I believe that we can see the contours of Gregory’s initiatives at work and, at least, the faint framework of an organized system of ecclesiastical charity that would emerge in clearer relief in the eighth and ninth centuries under Hadrian I (r. 772-795) and Leo III (r. -

Orthodox Teachers and Saints of the 18Th and 19Th Centuries
UNIT 2C TRADITION 59: ORTHODOX TEACHERS AND SAINTS OF THE 18TH AND 19TH CENTURIES Introduction – Breaking the Bonds After the failure of the Council of Florence and the fall of Constantinople to the Turks in 1453 the Christian east began to slide into a period of prolonged decline. Bemused by the Reformation which had racked the West yet lacking the theological and spiritual vigour which might have insulated the Church from corrosive Western influences, Orthodoxy began to imitate western manners and culture. Most notoriously, the Ecumenical Patriarch, Cyril Lukaris, (1572-1638), in his struggle against the growing dominance of Rome, resorted to Protestant Calvinism and his teaching was condemned by no less than six local councils between 1638 and 1691. In an attempt to fight fire with fire and as a direct response to the career of Lukaris, two Confessions of Orthodox faith were issued by Peter Mogila, Metropolitan of Kiev (1633-1647) and Dositheus, Patriarch of Jerusalem (1669-1707), both Confessions being consciously adapted from Roman Catholic sources and both works being part of a wider disastrous program of westernisation. The 18th century, therefore, saw Orthodoxy in the East increasingly incarcerated within a western mindset which debilitated its spiritual life. The hierarchy in Russia not only looked to Rome as the model for efficient church administration, (urged on by Peter Mogila), but in the person of Patriarch Nikhon (1605-1681) it looked also to contentious models for liturgical reform. In 1652 to 1653 this policy triggered in Russia a tragic split between those who would not submit to the new ritual, the so- called Old Believers, and the reformers, a schism which has not been properly healed to this day. -

6-27-21 Who is Right, Paul or Barnabas? Acts 15:34-41. Everyone disagrees with someone at one 2me or another. Chris2ans are not exempt; we fight and whine with the best of them. Some2mes we even try to use the scriptures to win our arguments. Now, that’s not necessarily a bad thing but the inten2on in the heart of doing it can be. The N.T. records some of the early arguments among believers. When you read Romans and I Corinthians, you discover that Chris2ans disagreed on things like ea2ng meat offered to idols, on whether to observe the Sabbath Day, or whether to eat meat or be a vegetarian, and on whether to drink wine. We can read in Colossians a church that was torn by controversy over the proper role of angels, New Moon celebra2ons, and the proper diet for spiritual Chris2ans. In Thessalonica, the young church was deeply confused about the Second Coming of Christ. In Philippi there was evidently a major power struggle within the church, which is why Philippians contains such a strong plea for unity. Today, I am not speaking about disagreements over the fundamental, non-nego2able doctrines. These truths are not “up for grabs,” as if we could decide whether we believe that Jesus is God or whether we believe in the Second Coming, or deny the virgin birth, Jesus sinless life, death, burial and resurrec2on, or that saving faith is found by the gracious works of Jesus. Those truths belong to the “faith which was once for all delivered to the saints” (JuDe 3) In this message we are looking at what we might call Category 2 disagreements, areas of doctrine or prac2ce not involving the fundamentals of the Chris2an faith. -
