It is about how young people in a section of New York widely regarded as a site of unspeakable violence and tragedy created an art form that would sweep the world. It is a story filled with ironies, unexplored connections and lessons for today. And I am proud to share it not only with my wonderful Rock and Roll to Hip Hop class but with C-Span’s global audience through its lectures in American history series. Before going into the substance of my lecture, which explores some features of Bronx history which many people might not be familiar with, I want to explain what definition of Hip Hop that I will be using in this talk. Then his follow-up Hold On to Your Dreams widened the timeline, honing in on a valuable contributor to New York’s downtown music scene—cellist and composer Arthur Russell. While LStD ranged widely across many spaces, DJs, artists, assorted characters and issues, the Russell biography was an intimate portrait of a key player, who died from AIDS-related complications in 1992. Life and Death on the New York Dance Floor 1980–1983 (henceforth Life and Death) is the third segment in Lawrence’s New York project. Now he narrows the timeline and brings a forensic examination to just four years in the party scene. On the title, Lawrence explains, “the reference to life is intended to evoke the way that New York party culture didn’t merely survive the hyped death of disco but positively flourished in its wake”. And he clearly and convincingly argues that the short period was one characterised by a stirring artistic ferment, across music, art, dance and club space innovation. (2010) Directed by Dr. Noelle A. Morrissette. 53 pp. The purpose of this thesis is to define and document some of the issues and identifications commonly linked to the hip-hop generation. This particular faction of the African-American population is classified in the introduction as a group with unique values and cultural perspectives, as well as a host of generational mentalities (productive and pernicious) firmly embedded in the primary cultural movement of their era: hip-hop. Rap music is the greatest artistic achievement of this generation. Its popularity transcends economic, racial, and geographic boundaries. The lyrics of rap artists, from select periods of the hip-hop era, will be the major objects of critical analysis in this thesis. The hip-hop generation is alternately referred to as the post civil rights generation. Thus, the latter term provides a framework for locating the cultural and socioeconomic experiences of these African-Americans. The aftermath of the civil rights/ black power movement was characterized by many visible signs of social progress: desegregated public facilities, an increase in black elected officials, and a steadily growing black middle class. However the onset of globalization and the steep decline of American manufacturing jobs throughout the 1980s and 1990s contributed to the presence of a troubled urban minority underclass. Despite its crucial role in defining and producing contemporary hip-hop culture, this same minority underclass has been substantially disenfranchised and marginalized in the broader national sphere.
