Freitagnacht-Kryptos: Die Seeschlange(n) des Comer Sees Seit 1946 wird regelmäßig von einem Ungeheuer berichtet, das im malerischen Comer See in Italien lebt – Dutzende Sichtungen sind bereits registriert. Der Comer See bei Varenna, ausnahmsweise ohne Seeschlange Nun schien es fast so, als sei das Rätsel aufgeklärt: Am Ufer wurde eine Riesenschlange angeschwemmt. Wie die Zeitung „Provincia di Como“ am 3. September 2021 auf ihrer Homepage berichtet, wurde in Sorico, am nördlichen Seeende, ein vier Meter langer Python tot aufgefunden. Er lag am Ufer des Flusses Mera, der aus den Alpen kommend dort in den See mündet. Der Kadaver der Riesenschlange. Foto: La Provincia Ein (ungenannter) „sehr verängstigter“ deutscher Tourist habe das Tier entdeckt und sofort Alarm geschlagen. Er sei zuerst sehr erschrocken gewesen, habe dann aber festgestellt, dass sich das Tier nicht mehr bewegte. Er verständigte unmittelbar die Provinzpolizei. Als die Polizeipatrouille das Tier untersuchte, stellte sie fest, dass es definitiv tot war. Ein Sprecher der Polizei identifizierte die Riesenschlange als Python – ein Tier, das am oberen Comer See und dem nahen Naturreservat Pian di Spagna natürlich nicht vorkommt. Der Kadaver war vier Meter lang und maß etwa zwanzig Zentimeter im Durchmesser. Es müsse sich um ein ausgebüxte „Haustier“ handeln, mutmaßte die Polizei (bereits in den Vorjahren wurden Pythonkadaver im Gardasee angeschwemmt). „Es gibt spezielle Schlangenfarmen, allerdings nicht in der Provinz Como“, erklärte Marco Testa, der Kommandant der Provinzpolizei. „Eine gezüchtete Python ist eigentlich wenig gefährlich, sie kann sich aber an jede Art von Tier klammern, auch an große, die sie zerquetscht und dann auffrisst; das gleiche könnte natürlich auch einem Menschen passieren.“ Er nimmt an, dass die Python ihrem Halter entkommen sei und dann verhungerte, weil sie keine Nahrung fand. -

Eurasian lynx – Your essential brief Background Q: Are lynx native to Britain? A: Based on archaeological evidence, the range of the Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) included Britain until at least 1,300 years ago. It is difficult to be precise about when or why lynx became extinct here, but it was almost certainly related to human activity – deforestation removed their preferred habitat, and also that of their prey, thus reducing prey availability. These declines in prey species may have been exacerbated by human hunting. Q: Where do they live now? A: Across Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, northern China and Southeast Asia. The range used to include other areas of Western Europe, including Britain, where they are no longer present. Q: How many are there? A: There are thought to be around 50,000 in the world, of which 9,000 – 10,000 live in Europe. They are considered to be a species of least concern by the IUCN. Modern range of the Eurasian lynx Q: How big are they? A: Lynx are on average around 1m in length, 75cm tall and around 20kg, with the males being slightly larger than the females. They can live to 15 years old, but this is rare in the wild. Q: What do they eat? A: The preferred prey of the lynx are the smaller deer species, primarily the roe deer. Lynx may also prey upon other deer species, including chamois, sika deer, smaller red deer, muntjac and fallow deer. Q: Do they eat other things? A: Yes. Lynx prey on many other species when their preferred prey is scarce, including rabbits, hares, foxes, wildcats, squirrel, pine marten, domestic pets, sheep, goats and reared gamebirds. -

The Ice Age in North Hertfordshire What do we mean by ‘the Ice Age’? Thinking about ‘the Ice Age’ brings up images of tundra, mammoths, Neanderthals and great sheets of ice across the landscape. This simple picture is wrong in many ways. Firstly, there have been many different ‘Ice Ages’ in the history of the earth. The most dramatic happened between 2.4 and 2.1 billion years ago, known as the Huronian Glaciation. About the same time, earth’s atmosphere suddenly became rich in oxygen, and some scientists believe that the atmospheric changes reduced the temperature so much that the whole planet became covered in ice. 1: an Arctic ice sheet (© Youino Joe, USFWS, used under a Creative Commons licence) Another global cover of ice happened 650 million years ago when the first multi-celled animals were evolving. Geologists sometimes refer to this period as the ‘Snowball Earth’ and biologists know it as the Proterozoic. Temperatures were so low that the equator was as cold as present-day Antarctica. They began to rise again as concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere rose to about 13%, 350 times greater than today. Some carbon dioxide came from volcanic eruptions, but some was excreted by microbial life, which was beginning to diversify and increase in numbers. Neither of these Ice Ages is the one that dominates the popular imagination. Both happened many millions of years before life moved on to land. There were no humans, no mammals, no dinosaurs: none of the creatures familiar from The Flintstones. The period most people think about as the ‘real’ Ice Age is the geologists’ Pleistocene era, from more than two-and-a-half million years ago to the beginning of the Holocene, almost 12,000 years ago. -

However, the fact that home ranges can vary widely within a species makes data transfer between study areas difficult. Home ranges of Eurasian lynx Lynx lynx vary by a factor of 10 between different study areas in Europe. This study aims to try and explain this variation in terms of readily available indices of prey density and environmental productivity. On an individual scale we related the sizes of 52 home ranges, derived from 23 (9:14 male:female) individual resident lynx obtained from south-eastern Norway, with an index of density of roe deer Capreolus capreolus. This index was obtained from the density of harvested roe deer within the municipalities covered by the lynx home ranges. We found a significant negative relationship between harvest density and home- range size for both sexes. On a European level we related the sizes of 111 lynx (48:63 male: female) from 10 study sites to estimates derived from remote sensing of environmental productivity and seasonality. -

Main points There were an estimated 2.85 million residents moving between local authorities in England and Wales between July 2014 and June 2015. This is the same level shown in the previous 12-month period. There were 53,200 moves from England and Wales to Northern Ireland and Scotland, compared with 45,600 from Northern Ireland and Scotland to England and Wales. This means there was a net internal migration loss for England and Wales of 7,600 people. For the total number of internal migration moves the sex ratio is fairly neutral; in the year to June 2015, 1.4 million (48%) of moves were males and 1.5 million (52%) were females. Young adults were most likely to move, with the biggest single peak (those aged 19) reflecting moves to start higher education. -

THE GREAT STORM OF 1987: 20-YEAR RETROSPECTIVE RMS Special Report EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Great Storm of October 15–16, 1987 hit northern France and southern England with unexpected ferocity. Poorly forecast, unusually strong, and occurring early in the winter windstorm season, this storm — known in the insurance industry as “87J” — has been ascribed negative consequences beyond its direct effects, including severe loss amplification, and according to one theory, the precipitation of a major global stock market downturn. Together with other catastrophic events of the late 1980s and early 1990s, the storm brought some companies to financial ruin, while at the same time creating new business opportunities for others. The global reinsurance industry in particular was forced to adapt to survive. In this climate, the way was clear for new capital to enter the market, and for the development of innovative ways to assess and transfer the financial risk from natural hazards and other perils. Twenty years following the 1987 event, this report chronicles the unique features of the storm and the potential impact of the event should it occur in 2007, in the context of RMS’ current understanding of the windstorm risk throughout Europe. The possible consequences of a storm with similar properties taking a subtly different path are also considered. In 1987, losses from the storm totalled £1.4 billion (US$2.3 billion) in the U.K. alone. RMS estimates that if the Great Storm of 1987 were to recur in 2007, it would cause between £4 billion and £7 billion (between US$8 billion and US$14.5 billion) in insured loss Europe-wide. -
