Digital champions see more on pages 24 and 25 National changemakers see more on pages 8 and 9 Local campaigners see more on pages 14 and 15 Reach plc Annual Report 2019 1 Strategic Report Chairman’s statement Reach delivered a robust financial performance during the past year in line with our expectations.” Nicholas Prettejohn Chairman Introduction Against a backdrop of political and economic uncertainty, I am pleased to report that 2019 was a year of solid financial performance for Reach with improved trends in revenue, higher earnings and strong cash flow generation. The delivery against operating targets, such as the growth of our online audience, was excellent. We welcomed Jim Mullen as our new Chief Executive as well as other new members of the Board. Towards the end of the year, we started work to redefine the strategic shape of Reach for the coming years. 2 Reach plc Annual Report 2019 Strategic Report Governance Financial Statements Highlights Board changes At the start of March 2019, Simon Fuller joined the Board as Chief Financial Officer and Company Secretary, taking over from Vijay Vaghela who stepped down from the Board at the same time. A chartered accountant with significant listed company 6.7% increase in dividend experience, Simon was previously the Chief Financial Officer at McColl’s Retail Group plc. Vijay spent some 24 years with the Company and, on behalf of the Board and staff of Reach, I thank him for his long and loyal service. Simon Fox stepped down from the Board in mid-August, leaving Growth in Reach after seven years as Chief Executive. During his tenure, he oversaw a number of strategic acquisitions, including the purchase of Local World and the acquisition of the UK publishing assets of Northern & Shell, thereby helping to position Reach as our online the largest commercial national and regional news publisher in the UK. Simon left Reach in a strong position and well placed for the next stage of its development. On behalf of the Board and our audience shareholders, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Simon for all his hard work and wish him well for the future. After a comprehensive search, we were delighted to appoint Jim Mullen to the Board in August 2019 as Chief Executive. Jim brings Strong with him a rich and relevant experience, particularly in the area of digital transformation, gained from his time at Ladbrokes Coral, William Hill and News International. I am confident he will prove Board to be an outstanding leader for Reach.     Reach PLC summary response to the Digital Markets Taskforce call for evidence Introduction Reach PLC is the largest national and regional news publisher in the UK, with influential and iconic brands such as the Daily Mirror, Daily Express, Sunday People, Daily Record, Daily Star, OK! and market leading regional titles including the Manchester Evening News, Liverpool Echo, Birmingham Mail and Bristol Post. Our network of over 70 websites provides 24/7 coverage of news, sport and showbiz stories, with over one billion views every month. Last year we sold 620 million newspapers, and we over 41 million people every month visit our websites – more than any other newspaper publisher in the UK. Changes to the Reach business Earlier this month we announced changes to the structure of our organisation to protect our news titles. This included plans to reduce our workforce from its current level of 4,700 by around 550 roles, gearing our cost base to the new market conditions resulting from the pandemic. These plans are still in consultation but are likely to result in the loss of over 300 journalist roles within the Reach business across national, regional and local titles. Reach accepts that consumers will continue to shift to its digital products, and digital growth is central to our future strategy. However, our ability to monetise our leading audience is significantly impacted by the domination of the advertising market by the leading tech platforms. Moreover, as a publisher of scale with a presence across national, regional and local markets, we have an ability to adapt and achieve efficiencies in the new market conditions that smaller local publishers do not.

Hutchison University of Stirling Stirling, UK Abstract: Scotland is distinctive within the United Kingdom newspaper industry both because more people read papers and also because Scots overwhelmingly prefer to read home-produced organs. The London ‘national’ press titles have never managed to penetrate and dominate in Scotland to the preponderant extent that they have achieved in provincial England and Wales. This is true both of the market for daily and for Sunday papers. There is also a flourishing Scottish local weekly sector, with proportionately more titles than in England and a very healthy circulation total. Some of the reasons for this difference may be ascribed to the higher levels of education obtaining in Scotland. But the more influential factor is that Scotland has retained distinctive institutions, despite being part of Great Britain for almost exactly three hundred years. The state church, the education system and the law have not been assimilated to any significant amount with their counterparts south of the border. In the nineteenth century in particular, religious disputes in Scotland generated a huge amount of interest. Sport in Scotlaand, too, is emphatically not the same as in England, whether in terms of organisation or in relative popularity. Additionally, the menu of major political issues in Scotland often has been and is quite divergent from England – for instance, the land question and self-government.

    REGISTER OF JOURNALISTS’ INTERESTS (As at 14 December 2017) INTRODUCTION Purpose and Form of the Register Pursuant to a Resolution made by the House of Commons on 17 December 1985, holders of photo- identity passes as lobby journalists accredited to the Parliamentary Press Gallery or for parliamentary broadcasting are required to register: ‘Any occupation or employment for which you receive over £760 from the same source in the course of a calendar year, if that occupation or employment is in any way advantaged by the privileged access to Parliament afforded by your pass.’ Administration and Inspection of the Register The Register is compiled and maintained by the Office of the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards. Anyone whose details are entered on the Register is required to notify that office of any change in their registrable interests within 28 days of such a change arising. An updated edition of the Register is published approximately every 6 weeks when the House is sitting. Changes to the rules governing the Register are determined by the Committee on Standards in the House of Commons, although where such changes are substantial they are put by the Committee to the House for approval before being implemented. Complaints Complaints, whether from Members, the public or anyone else alleging that a journalist is in breach of the rules governing the Register, should in the first instance be sent to the Registrar of Members’ Financial Interests in the Office of the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards. Where possible the Registrar will seek to resolve the complaint informally. In more serious cases the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards may undertake a formal investigation and either rectify the matter or refer it to the Committee on Standards.

Alison, thank you for joining me. Hi. Alison, you were appointed in March. It must have been an incredibly proud moment for you, how is it going? It’s going really well, I think. I hope. It’s been a busy few months, because obviously Reach has bought the Express as well, so there have been a lot of issues going on. But in terms of the actual paper at the Mirror, I hope, I feel, that we’re reaching a point of sustained confidence, which is so important for a paper. We’ve had some real success on campaigns, which I think is really our lifeblood. And I think we’re managing to energise the staff, which is absolutely essential for a well-functioning newspaper. Is it more managerial at the moment with the organisational challenges that you’ve been dealing with? Because you must, as the leader of the business, as the editor, you’ve got so many things you could be doing, you’ve got to choose, having to prioritise.

    African Newspapers Currently Received by American Libraries Compiled by Mette Shayne Revised Summer 1999 INTRODUCTION This union list updates African Newspapers Currently Received by American Libraries compiled by Daniel A. Britz, Working Paper no. 8 African Studies Center, Boston, 1979. The holdings of 19 collections and the Foreign Newspapers Microfilm Project were surveyed during the summer of 1999. Material collected currently by Library of Congress, Nairobi (marked DLC#) is separated from the material which Nairobi sends to Library of Congress in Washington. The decision was made to exclude North African papers. These are included in Middle Eastern lists and in many of the reporting libraries entirely separate division handles them. Criteria for inclusion of titles on this list were basically in accord with the UNESCO definition of general interest newspapers. However, a number of titles were included that do not clearly fit into this definition such as religious newspapers from Southern Africa, and labor union and political party papers. Daily and less frequently published newspapers have been included. Frequency is noted when known. Sunday editions are listed separately only if the name of the Sunday edition is completely different from the weekday edition or if libraries take only the Sunday or only the weekday edition. Microfilm titles are included when known. Some titles may be included by one library, which in other libraries are listed as serials and, therefore, not recorded. In addition to enabling researchers to locate African newspapers, this list can be used to rationalize African newspaper subscriptions of American libraries. It is hoped that this list will both help in the identification of gaps and allow for some economy where there is substantial duplication.
