These objectives are in line with the nationwide strategy on mobility of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport outlined in “#ItaliaVeloce”. The component is focused on the rail network known as Integrated National Transport System of 1st level (SNIT), with a clear priority on the TEN-T network (core and comprehensive). The implementing entity is primarily the public national company “Rete Ferroviaria Italiana” (RFI), besides some works to be carried out by regional railways. In the railway sector the interventions are focused on: (i) High-speed railway connections to the South for passengers and freight; (ii) High- speed lines in the North connecting to Europe; (iii) Diagonal connec- tions; (iv) Introducing the European Rail Transport Management System (ERTMS); (v) Strengthening metropolitan nodes and key national links; (vi) Strengthening regional railway lines; (vii) Up- grading, electrification and resilience of railways in the South; (viii) Upgrading railway stations in the South; (ix) Renewal of the rolling stock. -

Coastal Cities and their Sustainable Future III 95 BIOREGIONAL APPROACH TO INTEGRATING TRANSPORT NETWORKS AND NATURAL AREAS IN THE LAZIO REGION COASTAL AREA, ITALY ALBERTO BUDONI & VALERIO MAZZESCHI La Sapienza University of Rome, Italy ABSTRACT “Bioregion”, a term coined by Peter Berg in 1977, was improved by Alberto Magnaghi, who defined it as the space for developing new relationships of coexistence between the inhabitants–producers and the territory of a region. Therefore, bioregion is a tool for rethinking regional planning, no longer as the sum of different sectorial planning exercises, but as a “transdisciplinary planning” approach that considers all of a territory’s aspects. This approach is related to EU policies for Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) and the protection of maritime and coastal areas. This paper presents a case study on the coastal areas of the Lazio region of Italy which have a great many natural areas but which is also one of the most anthropized areas in the region. Indeed, due to the rising population, many interventions in the coastal areas resulted in the transformation of natural zones into urban areas. One effect has been urban sprawl and the related lack of capillarity of the public transport network. The result was that many ecosystems and natural areas were fragmented, losing their biodiversity. With a view to reconnecting these fragmented areas, this paper discusses a new regional scenario based on enhancing the linkages between land transport networks and the maritime gateway. In this scenario, railway corridors would stimulate a new organisation for the region’s settlements by representing not only the network connecting the bioregion’s cities and towns but also the cornerstones for the environmental regeneration of the coastal areas. -

Phowa Practice From Atri Dzogchen Retreat with Choekhortshang Rinpoche Orte (Italy) November 1 to 3, 2019 Lungtok Ling Association (www.lungtokling.org) organizes a three days residential retreat with the Bonpo Master Nyima Woser Choekhortshang Rinpoche on Phowa Practice. This is a meditation practice belonging to the Tibetan Bon and Buddhist traditions, consisting in the transfer of the individual consciousness at the moment of one’s death. Obtaining knowledge on the process of dying and regular Phowa practice serve to prepare us for the process of passing away. A good practitioner may have no fear of death since one knows what is going to happen and is well-prepared for that. The practice of Phowa allows us to consciously manage the mind at the moment of one’s own death which helps us to make the best out of this process and achieve spiritual realization. In this retreat, Choekhortshang Rinpoche, will transmit the teaching of Phowa according to the Atri Dzogchen tradition, which is one of the most important spiritual lineages of Bon, a complete system designed to guide the practitioner to the realization of A (symbolizing the primordial state) in fifteen sessions of practice. The text of the fifteenth session of Atri includes instructions on consciousness transference to be practiced at the time of death. The instructions say that if the practitioner fails to achieve Buddhahood in this life using the instructions of the fourteen sessions of the Atri system, then one can use the instructions of the fifteenth session to reach enlightenment during the dying process. The retreat is open to both advanced practitioners and beginners. -

Vigo: The Allied Landing at Anzio-Nettuno, 22 January–4 March 1944: Op THE ALLIED LANDING AT ANZIO-NETTUNO, 22 JANUARY–4 MARCH 1944 Operation SHINGLE Milan Vego he Allied amphibious landing at Anzio-Nettuno on 22 January 1944 (Op- eration SHINGLE) was a major offensive joint/combined operation. Despite TAllied superiority in the air and at sea, the Germans were able to bring quickly large forces and to seal the beachhead. Both sides suffered almost equal losses during some four months of fighting. The Allied forces on the beachhead were unable to make a breakout or to capture the critically important Colli Laziali (the Alban Hills) that dominated two main supply routes to the German forces on the Gustav Line until the main Fifth Army advanced close to the beachhead.
